  1. Urias continues to look like a really solid hitter, and I love every bit of it.
  2. Counsell has shown zero flexibility on this. He should though. I hope this changes in the playoffs. The good news is the extra runner rule won’t be part of the postseason, at least not for this year.
  3. Peralta appears to be overthrowing his pitches. No command. Frustrating to watch when we know how good he can look.
  4. I’d love for Burnes to pitch Wednesday, but the five days of rest is something they’ve committed to so I understand it. I also think it’s also possible that the extra day of recovery is improving pitcher performance somewhat.
  5. Looking back at the past few full seasons in which they were competing, they’ve always added players. In 2017, they were 44-39 on July 1st and had a 3.0 game division lead on the Cubs. They added Anthony Swarzak (July 26), Jeremy Jeffress (July 31), and Neil Walker (August 12) via trade. In 2018, they were 48-35 on July 1st and had a 0.5 game division lead on the Cubs. They added Joakim Soria (July 26), Mike Moustakas (July 27), Jonathan Schoop (July 31), Xavier Cedano (August 31), Curtis Granderson (August 31), and Gio Gonzalez (August 31). They had also traded for Brad Miller on June 10. In 2019, they were 46-39 on July 1st and had a 1.0 game division lead on the Cubs. They added Jordan Lyles (July 29), Jake Faria (July 31), Drew Pomeranz (July 31), and Ray Black (July 31). A few takeaways… They’ve always done something when they were contending in a 162-game season. In each of those seasons they didn’t make a July trade until the last week before the deadline with the 26th being the earliest July date. Reminder that this year’s trade deadline is actually July 30th instead of the 31st. Relievers have been the most frequent addition they’ve made. They added several players in the past via August’s revocable trade waivers, but I believe that is no longer an option.

  7. Per Adam McCalvy: The Giants took a loss today so the Brewers have the best record in baseball since Willy Adames joined them on May 22. Milwaukee is 24-10 beginning with that date.
  8. The Brewers have scored 132 runs over the past month, the 7th best mark in baseball over that period and 3rd best in the National League behind only the Giants (141 runs) and Reds (134 runs). BTW, the Cardinals are dead last at 82 runs scored over that same timeframe. Things are looking up a bit!
  9. While I agree that things will obviously get tougher, the good news is the Brewers are 14-6 in their games against teams currently with a better than .500 record.
  10. Per Adam McCalvy: Ryan Weber on to make his Brewers debut. He's the 50th player to appear in a game for Milwaukee. The franchise record is 53 players used by the 1969 Pilots and 2018 Brewers.
  11. Well this is very similar to the setup prior to Lauer’s blowup 6th inning last Sunday. Hopefully a much different outcome today.
  12. I won’t go so far as to say Keston is back, but I think his feast or famine approach could work just fine near the bottom of the order for the foreseeable future.
  13. On paper you would expect some runs to be scored today. Unfortunately for the Brewers two players that led the last Sunday’s 7-6 victory in this identical pitching matchup won’t be in today’s lineup. Kolten Wong and Daniel Vogelbach combined for 5 hits in the game including a Wong home run versus González.

  15. The Cubs play on Sunday Night Baseball in LA tomorrow night before flying the red-eye to Milwaukee for the series opener on Monday. The Brewers also currently have Peralta-Woodruff-Burnes lined up and listed as their starters for that series.
