  1. I long for a stat that displays how often the player hits the ball HARD. I was excited to find out that there was a stat called "line drive percentage". I thought this was going to be GREAT. I quickly read how this stat was calculated and furious that it had NOTHING to do with how often a player can be expected to hit a linedrive. In FACT it does just the opposite. It rewards players for making the least amount of contact. The point is, all stats need to be looked at with a keen eye. I wish there were a stat that gauged each AB somehow, much like the Quality Start stat, but there doesnt seem to be.
  2. Stats rule and are a HUGE part of baseball and in fact make baseball the most intriguing of all major sports. However, even Bill James acknowledges that there are plenty of things within the game that are immeasurable and often misunderstood or even misleading when looking at the stats. All one can do is use stats to confirm what the eye sees. I knew Hardy would hit dispite the fact that he was hitting .180 for a long time. there wasnt a statistic to be found that would indicate that Hardy would hit and hit a lot. Low and behold, post all star break OPS .878. Find me a stat that would have predicted that. I LOVE stats and grew up spinning the spinner on my ALL-STAR baseball game and recording stats for hours on end but there is a reason baseball uses scouts. The eye can be a very useful tool in determining how the stats may be misleading, overestating or understating a players real ability. Plus there are very skilled stat magicians in the world that could cherry pick numbers and prove just about anything they want to prove. PS....anytime there is a stat called "Line drive percentage" that doesnt have anything to do with how often a player hits a line drive, stats will be debated. PS#2 ....if statistics where the end all of sports information....Las Vegas would surely have gone bankrupt decades ago. You can NOT simply punch numbers into a computer and predict with certainty how things will unfold. Once again, I am a stat lover but things go deeper than the numbers.
  3. Not to be overlooked, with his game today Jenkins moves his OPS to .890. That looks good enough to slip into the top 10 among NL Outfielders and roughly top 18 OVERALL hitters in the league. Safe to say Jenks is key to a playoff type season in '06. When you look at just post all-star break Jenks would be an MVP candidate.
  4. Capuano also strikes out more than guys like Willis AND Oswalt. Melvin could really have himself a staff next year if he can add one more guy in between Sheets and Cappy.
  5. Capuano is about to be in the top 4 in the NL in wins.
  6. JJ rules. I am telling you. His swing is sooooooooooo level. He is going to rule.
  7. I am glad to see JJ's numbers start to mirror his talent. I have no doubt in my mind that JJ is at LEAST a .280 career hitter. With his swing he is going to put up numbers. He has his detractors but a long time ago this year I compared his swing to.....drumroll please......Albert Pujols. Does he have the power of Albert? No, but as far as keeping the bat level through the entire plane of the swing, Albert and JJ are about the best I have seen this year. I dont expect JJ to put up 1.000 OPS years any time soon but with a swing like he has the numbers will come. I am excited about JJ but also a bit worried that he is going to end up with a better average than Weeks, which would be sort of depressing.
  8. Are there any free agent third base coaches available in the offseason?
  9. No, but there are plenty of people who believe k's arent any worse than a flyball that Torri Hunter robs 3 feet over the center field fence. This whole argument about k's not sucking is stupid. If the stats say they arent more damaging to a team then let me say this. The stats are wrong and misleading. Show me a stat that explains how someone who goes 0-4 with 3 k's takes away any confidence for the next game. Show me how completly missing the ball displays skill and gives any hope that the player has any reason to believe next time will be different. I could go on and on about this but its pointless. The stats say that k's dont hurt any more than balls put in play that are recorded as outs. If the stats say so, many people will buy into it but its wrong. If k's don't matter why are strikeout pitchers so highly sought after buy every team in baseball? Its just a ridiculous notion that k's dont matter.
  10. Is there anyone here who would rather see Overbay start tonight at first base? Put me on board as rather seeing Prince in the lineup.
  11. todays game isnt on FSN? I believe it is.
  12. At least there is a kick butt episode of "House" on at 8.
  13. Ned and Lyle sitting in a tree....
  14. did we ever figure out why Jenkind isnt playing? Does the fact that he has carried this team offensively since july mean anything to Yost?
  15. the no hitter is still alive.....
  16. why doesnt yahoo or MLB have the running boxscore up yet? No one even has lineups posted.
  17. this game is the difference between starting the homestand 4-2 or 3-3. This is a homestand where Milwaukee needs 8 wins. Cappy must come through. I will admit, much enthusiasm for the remainder of the season is tempered with the news about Ben.
  18. Can Fielder please get a start tomorow? The more I watch Lyle, the more unimpressed I become. When is the last time he even hit a ball hard? He is not the same hitter he was last year. I am not sure what changed but the time for Fielder to see what he can do has got to be SOON.
  19. it seems impossible for this team to get to .500. I just dont get why they implode in games like this.
  20. rluz are you saying that if Milwaukee is to keep the playoff door realistically open, a sweep of the ATL would do it?
  21. I dont think the TBS game will be blacked out here in madison.
  22. The difference in that game was after Helms leadoff double. He was stranded. That cost Milw the game.
