  1. Not to get greedy, but would be nice to get one more here....
  2. Good sign from Jenkins - those were two rockets he's hit tonight.
  3. Gallardo is looking pretty good on a night without his best stuff, isn't he?
  4. Very good sign with Weeks last few games
  5. Wow, that was a pretty early shower for Dunn, huh?
  6. What the hell is Schroeder talking about?
  7. A little losing and it really gets sour in here. The negativity of our players is stunning. Jenks sucks, now I guess Gwynn has gone from loved to hated, Graffy is back and forth everyday, CC is bad always I think, and Yost always sucks. Not really - just still emotional from last night, I think. Between Estrada's lack of hustle (or, ...injury) and Balfour, I think fans are just frustrated. And overall we've been in quite the offensive funk.
  8. Man, that was a patented Miller drive to the right-field gap for a double, wasn't it? Seems like it just hung up too long. But 1-0 at least!
  9. Keppinger I believe is known for OBP, too. Careful not to take him for granted as a journeyman here!
  10. brewerjamie15, I couldn't agree more. If he was really injured, he shouldn't have been in there. Miller's not the quickest catcher, but he's going to hustle.
  11. Brewtank, trying a little reverse psychology are we?
  12. Has there been any speculation in the press (at all) about Tex and the Brewers? I'm just curious if anyone has seen even a hint (like at MLB trade rumors, or wherever). I agree this would be outstanding, but I'm not holding my breath.
  13. I believe it's fine to pick up the option and then trade him. When you pick up the option, he's under contract like any other player and tradeable. What I'm not sure about (with the new CBA) is what we can or can't do with him if we decline his option. It's different than declining arbitration, so I think we could negotiate to bring him back at a lower salary. But someone is going to need to confirm or correct that. Re: Klesko, also remember that he missed almost a whole year, so this is his first full year again. Assuming his age doesn't catch up to him, he should be serviceable for next year and possibly 09. And you and I agree - it's the $$ that makes him at all attractive. I like the idea of using the savings to retain Cordero!
  14. Ok, I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict a HUGE night out of Jenkins. Pretty easy to throw that one out there since I don't believe anyone else will!!
  15. Great perspective, Geno! I see how you became Chief Cynic (although I'd sure like to vie for Chief Cynic 2!). Those are the types of calls that keep teams from being trading partners - ever. Tell me Doug doesn't remember exactly who throws around crazy ideas - do you think that team will be at the top of his list next time he's looking around? As he has pointed out in the past, you always look for deals that at least satisfy both teams. I use "satisfy" rather than "benefit" because you can't always guarantee that. His Sexson trade is a great example (and there are others) where the other team at least felt satisfied with the deal. It may have ultimately worked out in our favor, but it could have just as easily gone the other way. I believe many people thought Sexson was going to be huge in Arizona for a number of years, but it just didn't work out that way. Same with the opposite - Overbay really never did anything but be a good prospect and he happened to live up to those expectations with us. But both teams were satisfied. Neither side tried to trade a AA player for Prince Fielder!! We should be a bit offended by those few GMs, but DM will make them pay in the end.
  16. Too bad he couldn't have hopped MA's plane this afternoon after the game so he could play this evening in Cincy! (yes, I'm kidding before anyone discusses flying times, etc.)
  17. So, you can't look at how many trades a team makes and say, "okay, the Cubs are trying to win because they have made 2 trades and the Brewers are not trying to win now because they haven't made any trades." Another great point that hasn't been made often enough. Who could the Brewers have gotten to upgrade from Estrada/Miller? Probably no one. So, continue to look around the team and there aren't many areas where they can upgrade with what's available (as DM has said many times when asked). 1B - ok 2B - possibility depending on what's available (Castillo?) SS - ok, unless you believe Hardy is in a really bad funk 3B - ok LF - possibility, but it would really need to be better than Menchkins. CF - ok assuming Hall is back this week RF - ok C - ok Bench - ok SP - ok, unless you can find someone better than Gallardo (which is kind of tricky to measure given his relative inexperience) Looks good now, but will the league figure him out the second time around? RP - add a lefty Go through the same exercise with Chicago or St. Louis and you probably have more areas where they need to make a deal because they believe they need upgrades.
  18. It was that quote from Melvin that has led many to believe there won't be any deals to be had this week. Or at best, a minor tweak to the bullpen or a bench player.
  19. That's exactly what I was alluding to when I mentioned OPS is a skewed stat, but I didn't want to upset anyone and cause the thread to go into a discussion about the validity of OPS. Geno's had some great posts about this in other threads. Oh, come on, I love it when the threads veer out of control! Seriously, I'm glad you didn't as well. Everyone assumes because of my "moneyballman" that I'm a huge OPS guy, but I agree that it's just one stat among many that needs consideration. But it always seems like a logical, easy stat to handle many discussions/comparisons. I just happened to have read that book before registering on BF.net and can never think of snappy screen names! But come on, let's head this thread off into a statistical discussion vortex!!
  20. Splitter, I agree completely and I believe you said what I was trying (probably unsuccessfully) to say. We're just getting started on this upward swing!
  21. Ok, here's the balance to my excitement about Floyd - from Baseball Prospectus: "After getting cuffed around in Philly at the start of 2005, Floyd was sent to Scranton for the rest of the IL season. Floyd was mugged there, too, though he made two more starts in Philadelphia upon being recalled when the rosters expanded in September. None of this should have been a surprise, as Floyd started only five games in Triple-A before making his big league debut in 2004. At 23, Floyd needs to learn how to pitch to disciplined hitters, any one of whom can turn around his fastball or hit a mistake curve over buildings. If learning by experience, level by level, wasn`t crucial to the development of all but the rarest talents, teams could simply jump their top prospects to the majors and let them learn with the big boys. It doesn`t work that way, especially with a high school draftee who sets up his out pitch with a mediocre fastball." Maybe the best thing to do is acquire him, let him work with Maddux and then possibly pitch in Nashville next year. Doesn't help us for the playoff run this year, but an intriguing possibility if he's available cheaply.
