  1. May be time to lock this thread once and for all. This HAS to have been another Cubs fan registering and starting this. It is great to see that they're so focused on what's going on up here, though!
  2. Yes, Floyd was a very highly thought of prospect. In fact, entering 2004 and 2005, BA had him as the Phillies #2 prospect and projected him as a #2 or #3 SP. From BA 2004 Prospect Handbook: "Floyd would rank as the top prospect in many other organizations. He signed for a club-record $4.2m as the fourth overall pick in 2001 - one spot before fellow Mount St. Joseph H product Mark Teixeira. ...Floyd entered his pro career with two plus pitches, a 92-95 mph fastball with movement, and a shoulder-to-shoelaces hard curveball that rates 80 on the 20-80 scouting scale at times." He's still only 24 and I think it would be a great pickup not just for another lefty in the BP this year, but additional depth going forward. Being so young, you just never know when he may suddenly "get it" and reach his potential.
  3. I agree - "yes". And if we put any kind of money on my answer, then we'll certainly acquire someone just so I lose my cash!
  4. Can't wait to see Gallardo again this evening. So, Melvin and Yost must have had a few Miller High Life's last night, maybe thrown a few empty bottles against the lockers and wound up not killing Balfour, huh? Glad to see they can control their emotions better than me!
  5. I agree on the Jenks vs Klesko, but if it's $9 mil option for Jenks (and $4m+ for Mench in order to keep the Menchkins platoon going) vs. $2 mil for Klesko???? Just another idea. Like I said, I'm not suggesting that is our best option. Just an option.
  6. BrewCrew, no, I fall into the "B" option above. If the original poster is correct that the pitching is horrible, then I'd rather get him out of there sooner rather than later. He'll wind up getting frustrated and flail at anything. The important thing is his ankle, not his stats. Bring him up!
  7. lithium, great post and great evaluation of where Braun is. I agree completely and have been very impressed thus far. And I will also admit that I was a Gordon or Zimmerman fan ahead of Braun at the time.
  8. I'll disagree a little bit and maybe clarify what I meant (which may really be the problem). If they see someone available who would OBVIOUSLY help us reach and possibly win the WS, I believe they'd be willing to part with major future pieces. So, they're willing to do whatever it takes for an absolute, but not willing to do whatever it takes to do something at all risky. Does that make it clearer or did I just muddy my thoughts even more? For example, if Minnesota came and said Santana was available, I'm thinking they may try to put a package together. Ok, that may be an over-the-top example, but that's what I mean. They'd be willing to do what it takes if they thought it would almost guarantee a trip to the WS. Otherwise, they'll bring in smaller pieces and/or stand pat. Ok, I'll shut up now as I'm probably not explaining myself any better.
  9. How about someone like Klesko for a year or two? Could play LF regularly (hits LH and RH about the same) and could also spell Fielder at 1B (which we really didn't have other than Graff this year). And he shouldn't cost much more than the $1.75 he's making this year. Just thought I'd toss his name out there as I haven't seen anyone mention him. I'm kind of neutral on him myself, but could be a veteran stop-gap until LaPorta arrives.
  10. His AB's so far have gone like this. 1st inning- Strikes out swinging 3rd inning- Pops out to 2nd base 4th inning- RBI single to right field 6th inning- Sacrifice fly to right field A. He's not ready to be activated. B. We better activate him soon before the crappy pitching ruins all of his mechanics.
  11. From everything I've seen, heard or read, DM and MA both believe we have a chance to win it all this year and are willing to do whatever it takes. That being said, they've both indicated that the Crew will also be very prudent in not trading away the future either. As a fan, I believe they have as reasonable of a shot at a WS title as any team this year. But as disappointing as it will be if they don't, I'm very happy to hear that they're not going to trade away the future. With the average age of our up and coming stars (Fielder, Weeks, Hardy, Braun, Hall, Gallardo, Parra, etc.), this team could be very good for years to come. And as long as we continue drafting well, we really do have the Braves model in motion. For example, we could conceivably let Sheets depart in FA, receive the draft picks and plug in a very highly rated prospect to take over (don't panic, just using it as an example). So I believe they're taking the right approach. I'd be happy if they can find an OF and middle reliever to help us, but will be equally happy if they don't because they didn't want to overpay. It's a pretty solid team when firing on all cylinders (which could very well be the difference in the end due to their relative youth).
  12. Excellent post - thank you for doing the research that I didn't! I'm guessing that Dunn and Holliday may be more difficult to obtain than many may assume. Dunn is a huge fan favorite in Cinci (obviously that may not matter if they really want to move him) and if Colorado has any hope of improving they really need to hold on to Holliday and continue building. I think the LaPorta plan (fast tracking) is accurate, but it's already being delayed by his injury. IF he finally gets to West Virginia this year, there's no way they jump him all the way to the bigs next year (unless he has such a spring that you'd be foolish not to bring him up). Even with a reasonable number of games at WV this year and a big spring, the highest I could see them starting him next year is AA with the potential of moving up. Even with fast-tracking, I can't see him arriving in Milwaukee until at least 2009. But obviously I'm not DM! A previous poster mentioned Griffey again and I've kind of ignored all mention of him recently (maybe just my own bias from assuming he'd never find his way to Milwaukee). But maybe there is some logic there for 08 and possibly his option in 09 if LaPorta's not ready. However, I wouldn't do it if it costs us an arm and a leg in prospects.
  13. Good point and Byrnes would be a great option (as I know others have mentioned as well). Unless Jenkins hits that game-winning game 7 home run to get us into the world series...... Tough to let him go after the ticket tape parade.
  14. Not from lack of effort, MoneyBall! I knew it would eventually, but it was fun while it lasted! Although it still hasn't gotten quite to the point of past threads on the topic. I guess we'll see where he ends the year (i.e. does he still get that hot 2nd half going). It may be easier said than done finding a replacement LF for less $ in the .850-.900 OPS range (even just against righties). For any kind of guaranteed production, you'll probably have to significantly overpay in FA given the limited options (which is what I understand to be the case this offseason without researching it on my own). That doesn't mean I'm all for picking up his option, but just stating that it's a closer call than some have stated. And a lot still depends on how he finishes out the season. If he hits a bomb to win the NL championship in game 7, he'll be a beloved hero even if he batted .220 with .650 OPS in the regular season!
  15. I think we already have this player on our roster - Kevin Mench. Take a look at their stats this year, and they're very similar (except for HR and RBI, due mainly to AB difference). But the OBP and SLG are very close and splits lefty vs righty are almost identical. And on the defensive side, Menchkins probably does better than having to trot Sosa out there. I will agree that it would be intriguing to see Sosa stick it to the Cubs, but hopefully Texas trades him somewhere else in the NL and he can still do so.
  16. As I stated before in this thread or another, I think Balfour just needed a full season in AAA to get over his arm troubles and then compete in spring training for a middle relief role. This could be with Milwaukee or another team. But it's probably not the best time to bring someone like this into the fold while every game is so critical. And I know, some will argue that he did so well at Nashville this year that he didn't have anything left to prove. Hindsight is 20/20, so I can't blame DM/NY for calling him up, but now they should realize that he probably needs a full season at AAA.
  17. Interesting that on the telecast tonight they mentioned that he could "win" the "rookie triple crown". While that sounds impressive, I was wondering if a) anyone had ever heard of someone refer to anything like this before and b) are there stats available that would confirm if it's ever been done before (assuming it has) and then c) who has done it? I had just never heard anyone refer to a "rookie triple crown" even informally. Interesting, though.
  18. I believe he's arby eligible after 07 and then fa after 08 (I believe he'll have slightly more than 4 years of service after this year). So, after 08 may still just be arby vs fa.
  19. Game05 - another good post. I'm very impressed with this thread tonight! Usually a Jenkins thread devolves pretty quickly!!
  20. I would hate to give up on this guy so quickly. I have been really hoping that he could step in as our closer next season. I still think he has that potential, let him get his feet wet for a few more times and we will see the real Grant soon. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. While maybe I'm overreacting with releasing the guy (I tend to not think I am), I just don't see closer potential at all in him. Maybe you're using sarcasm (like I do) and I'm just not recognizing it as such!! Best scenario is probably that he needs to spend a full year at AAA (for us or someone else) to prove he's healthy and then try to win a middle relief job in spring training.
  21. Yeah, I'd probably agree with that after doing a little research. Probably looks like more of an off season flyer for a team that needs a 4th or 5th starter and has no AAA depth. Seems to show signs of being a solid starter, but lacks consistency. And gives up a TON of hits. But then again, that could describe some $10 million pitchers! (ok, I couldn't resist that comment)
  22. I do need to admit that I didn't do ANY research to see if I'd be in favor of this or not - just reporting what I saw on MLB trade rumors. Off to Baseball Prospectus and others to learn more.....
  23. MLB trade rumors just reported that Riccardi is open to trading Towers, which could really benefit from a move to the NL. But this probably falls into the "better than Gallardo?" category, which probably takes the Brewers out of those discussions. Unless you bring Towers in and keep Gallardo in the pen (as DM has stated is his preference in order to save his arm).
  24. But wait, didn't we trade for Dunn last week? LOL Seriously, I agree that it may not be only a LRP that we need. But if you do acquire a corner OF, how do you fit them in? Jenkins and Mench off the bench with Hart, Hall and newcomer as the starters? Could be attractive if we could find the right player. But then we're back to the Dunn talk - who else has been kicked around? Jacque Jones? Griffey? Wilkerson? Sosa? (ok, maybe a little crazy there)
  25. All good posts on this topic (and more rational than many in the past). I've been a huge fan of Jenkins and did recognize the OPS he has carried in years past (especially when some wanted to trade him). I really believed he may turn it around this year with the lineup we have, but it doesn't appear he's going to. It could very well be caused by not playing every day (which I'm sure he may believe). It could very well be a self-fulfilling thing with him - he needs to play every day to be the kind of player you need out of a corner outfielder, but he can't prove it enough to get regular playing time. And some guys are just never good part-time players. However, regardless of the reason, it's clear he's NOT going to be an everyday OF for us this year (except in the case of real injury problems) or in the future. So, it's going to best for the team and Jenks to head elsewhere (this week or after the season). While I have my reservations now about whether he'll rebound completely, it wouldn't surprise me either if he went somewhere and had a few more good years as a starting OF. And as someone pointed out, we can use the $$ from his option to extend Sheets or buy out some arby/fa years from a couple of young players.
