  1. McGehee, Kottaras, Coffey, Axford, & Narveson But those finds haven't put the Brewers over the top. They have merely saved them from being the worst team in the league.
  2. Johan Santana, Josh Hamilton, Dan Uggla, and Shane Victorino were Rule 5 picks. Waiver claims are harder to dig up, but Melvin's top Rule 5 pick to date is... Adam Stern? In researching Turnbow (Melvin waiver pick-up for 2005 season), I found some info I did not know. In October 2003, Turnbow became the first major league player to test positive for a banned steroid. The positive test came during tryouts for USA Baseball's Olympic qualifying team. He did not face sanctions from Major League Baseball, because they did not begin testing for or penalizing steroid use until the 2004 season. He was banned for two years from international competition. I liked lcbj68c's post. Its strongly represents the way I feel about Melvin and the contrasting opinions of him.
  3. If the best reason we have for keeping a guy is we might get someone worse... well how do we ever get ahead if we approach decisions in that manner? Aren't we truly talking about fear in that case? "Well this sucks but it could always be worse?" Is this what is keeping Jim Hendry in Chicago? Melvin's overall body of work, and the obvious regression of the team's performance, leads me to the conclusion that Melvin is a very average GM. He's not bad, but he's not that good. Ho hum I would say. Take away the great timing of the Sabathia deal and Melvin is below average, and likely fired. That trade set up a goodwill buffer for him, which he is likely going to burn through this year and next. I'm not buying Melvin as a very good GM.
  4. Melvin is being held accountable for these mistakes, but he should also be credited for his successes. Like plucking Axford out of thin air. Granted there is risk with Axford, but its looking like a great minor league signing right now.
  5. While that is true, the Brewers gave Suppan 4/$42M, and they gave Sheets 4/$38.5M two years earlier. Needless to say, Suppan has been a colossal bust.
  6. how many teams really trade a position player after a 35 HR, Team MVP season? It sure would have been a bold move. Would not have been a popular move at the time, and who could foresee the guy falling off the cliff the way he did?
  7. Weird, TH just posted this lineup: Ah, beaten by So Cal. At least Gomez gets Escobar out of the 2 hole. He sure was struggling there.
  8. So was Braddock told he was heading to the show, got to the airport, then called back because the old catcher in Milwaukee's arm just fell off, and they will be sending Lucroy up instead? I would hate for Melvin to have to multitask. Handling two roster moves at once must be tough.
  9. I was thinking the Zaun thing put Melvin in a zim-zam. What to do with all those ineffective pitchers... that's going to take Melvin a while to figure out. Can't wait to see Vargas/Suppan/Hoffman blow a game(s) wide open this weekend. Deal with myself... the second I see either of these three take the mound, I'm turning my attention away. Maybe to Google Pac Man.
  10. I wonder if the Zaun situation possibly threw a wrench into the plan surrounding Braddock.
  11. Maybe its just a one day contract so he can retire as a Cub?
  12. Hopefully Lucroy gets his bat back. I'd imagine he gets the start on Sunday. Kottaras tomorrow and Saturday.
  13. I don't think Melvin can send down Axford after yesterday and today. He needs to be here to stay.
  14. If not for Braun's pathetic attempt at defense, Narvdog would have a shutout working on 13 less pitches.
  15. Braddock is not on the 40-man. Just sending someone down won't cut it. There needs to be a move to the 60-day DL or a DFA. I wonder if Vargas has been placed on waivers.
  16. Is the Braddock call official? There would need to be a roster move I believe. DFA?
  17. Thanks, my Brewers fandom mirrors Jimmy Dugan in so many ways lately. This thread is hilarious, good stuff everyone. Took my mind off the travishamockery for a minute. Braun's newest defensive approach doesn't seem to be working. I would go back to moving toward the ball rather than away from it.
  18. Hopefully that leads to a prolonged depression and demoralization in the Reds locker room.
  19. I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but let me know how Prince does vs Maholm tonight. I predict an o-ferI predict 1-4 with a single and 2K. Final score 7-3 in favor of the Mighty Pirates. In the 2 hole, Escobar has provided a .444 OBP so far. Probably just lucky though.
  20. Most of the greats know when they have nothing left to offer, and quit before they make fools of themselves. Honestly I think its the other way around. For Hoffman its almost too late. How nice would it be to see Axford stick as the "9th inning guy?" With that 'stache and heat coming out of the bullpen... the Ax-Man! Or something like that. I honestly do not want to hear Hells Bells again. I could never stand that song in the first place. Bon Scott has always been like nails on a chalkboard to me. How about those two changes ahead?
