  1. This thread is likely over before it started, but I'll try to get this in before its locked. ABSOLUTELY FIRE KEN MACHA! I doubt he will really care one way or the other.
  2. Playing the "flare" drinking game tonight. Good thing I bought the good tequila.
  3. Kauffman Stadium is in Missouri. So half of the actual Yostings will take place in Missouri.
  4. now I'm the most boring person in the world. Nah, there will always be Knit Knots.
  5. He pitched in ST this year.
  6. I didn't say he said they are irrelevant, but at the same time I didn't say past results should be ignored. I'm saying everything else should not hold as much weight in this case as they would for [younger] players, because the guy is working past retirement age. Its not a cookie cutter, he will rebound because history says so, case. I don't have any ethos on the subject anyway, what do I know? It's just my opinion. The games will show whether or not he is done. If there was a line on it, I would think it would be leaning toward "done." I would be very surprised if there were not front office discussions about the possibility. I think I mentioned earlier in this thread that if Hoffman's still struggling in or near June That's right around the corner. Likely another 5-7 appearances.
  7. I think most teams are smart enough these days to ignore team accomplishments when estimating the value of a player. This could be true, but since the consensus around baseball is the Phillies overpaid Howard, I can see where people could deduct that he was paid extra due to his and the team's accomplishments over the last four or so years.
  8. I agree if Capuano keeps dealing like he did yesterday he deserves a shot with the Brewers. But unless he does a 180, it should be Doug Davis getting the pink slip. He's actually been worse than Suppan (seems impossible, but true), and will be less damaging monetarily to send him out.
  9. That will obviously yield the most accurate estimate of any player's true ability. I don't think anyone really knows what Hoffman's true ability is at this time. I do have a problem with someone convincing themselves that only the results in the 2010 calender year is relevant. 2010 results certainly are not irrelevant.
  10. do you see what FtJ did in his post? I read it, and it was a good post by FtJ. I admit my May 12, 2010 3:29 PM post was harsh and combative. But I don't feel I need to show anyone why Hoffman is ineffective and likely out of gas. Don't take my word for it, just watch the games. I shouldn't be trying to convince others what I believe to be the case, that's for everyone else to decide on their own. If someone thinks its in the Brewers best interest to keep trotting Trevor Time out in the 9th inning, they have every right to feel that is the right thing to do. It is America afterall. Heck, you can even feel one way and portray your opinion as something completely different just to see what people say. It doesn't matter either way. What matters right now is the following... 12 appearances, 5 scoreless innings (5/12). 12 IP 16 ER 17 H 6 HR 6 BB 7 K
  11. Yosted! Wait, is it too soon?
  12. Hoffman is the root of the bullpen's problem, and is one of the biggest problems for the Brewers right now. That and the stupid banner in right field. In fact, if you could personify the Brewer bullpen problem right now, it would be Trevor Hoffman.
  13. Purely speculation from my standpoint, but someone on the JSOnline blog is stating the "Brewers' official offer to Prince (from the same unimpeachable source that gave you Ryan Braun and Randy Wolf) is for 6 years, $109m, with a club/vesting option for year 7 at $19m. Full no-trade clause."
  14. Do you acknowledge the fact that he could well just be getting himself sorted out still like most pitchers did in ST? How could his ineffectiveness be explained by a lack of action in ST when his routine has been the same for years, and at the same time suggest he will rebound because past years results conclude he is still the same pitcher? He did nothing different this year in ST than he has done in past years. Last year he came off the DL and was on fire. I wouldn't attribute his ineffectiveness this year to a lack of action in spring training anymore than I would suggest he will be fine based on past results. I guess I am not reading that far into it. He is what he is right now, awfully ineffective. Maybe Trevor will explain why in a book sometime down the line.
  15. You obviously think he's done and that you're unequivocally right but the point I think people are trying to make is that those who disagree with you are not automatically unrealistic. That's a fair point. Those disagreeing with me are more unrealistic than I am however. He has never been this awful in a 12 inning stretch in his life, so uncharted territory requires a new map be drawn. Especially when he's 42 years old. He can throw the change for a strike BTW, but when he does it gets hammered. Same with the fastball. His pitches are not effective this year. There is no denying that, location or mechanics aside.
  16. Burden of proof? Mechanics? I am not in Hoffman's head, so I can't speak to mechanics. All I can give is raw results, which I have. They are overwhelmingly awful. Suppan's velocity is the same it was in 2005, how come he's not good anymore? The same velocity as last year argument is vapid. I see it doesn't matter here anymore, it must be his location and mechanics. Exactly.
  17. Nothing to really debate about then. Debate this all you want, Trevor Hoffman's gas tank is empty. He will not make it through the year as the Brewers closer, and will continue to struggle to get through scoreless innings as the year goes on. Post how that's unfounded or whatever given what he's done in the past, but I'll be more than happy to show up in this thread when the proverbial splat hits the fan to say I told you so. It doesn't take an MIT grad to figure out Hoffman's effective closing days are over. They just are. It sucks the Brewers were the ones holding the hot potato.
  18. Hey, use the "he was great last year" all you want, but that's all it is - an argument. It has nothing to do with this year. I don't blame people for holding out hope that Hoffman can be even remotely effective this year, but its not a realistic standpoint imo. Especially if you have watched all of his outings. He's just as hittable as Joe Winkelsas (sp) out there, and I don't see how that's going to change this year. I would rather not give him another two or three months to prove the overreacting fans wrong, just because he is the all-time saves leader or because he was great last year. Do it because you believe he can. Judging by the stuff he is throwing this year, all I have is hope and not an ounce of belief.
  19. There is always "hope." Realistically, what you see now is likely what you will get for the rest of the year. I don't see how he is going to find a magical switch and all of a sudden become a completely different pitcher than he has been for the last 12 innings (25% of his workload for the year). Sure we can hope he will. I see Moyer's name come up often. I don't see what Jamie Moyer has to do with Trevor Hoffman and the Milwaukee Brewers. I could well be proven wrong I believe you are smack in the middle of being proven wrong. Wish I could say I can't wait to see him pitch again.
  20. What else should we rely on? His stuff is generally the same as previous years why would we expect different results? His stuff could likely be the same for another 7-10 years. Its not that special to begin with, but aha there is a difference! There is absolutely no movement on his fastball this year. you can't simply ignore that he had a great season last and he's been very good for a long time. That has to be taken into consideration. I would agree if he was 35 or even 37-8 years old. But he's over 40. IMO, what he's done in the past can be thrown out the window with the fact that he probably shouldn't be pitching in MLB anymore. What he's done in the past should be ignored, unless you are prepared to suffer though his appearances. I don't like suffering, and that is what's going on each and every time he comes into a game this year whether he gives up 0 or 5 runs. Its suffering.
  21. Of course, the way the message was framed ("Really, Brian?") seemed over the top I thought it was fitting, since I find myself (and even my wife) asking that same question multiple times during the game.
  22. He did walk a batter on 5/7 but erased the runner on a stellar double play turn by the defense. Out of 12 appearances this year, Hoffman has worked a scoreless frame FIVE times. He has given up 16 earned runs in 12 innings of work. Only the hardest core believers would actually believe this guy is going to have a successful campaign this year. There really is no evidence to go on, other than previous years. Too bad we can't use previous years Trevor Hoffman this year.
  23. The Twins don't know it yet, but they are stuck in average-ville also.
