  1. It is? Maybe "backup" 3rd baseman, but 3rd string? Behind McGehee and who? Today's Brewers line up... Lopez 2B Counsell 3B Braun LF Fielder 1B Cameron CF Gerut RF Kendall C Escobar SS Bush P
  2. I don't care what the answer is, just so the question is who's replacing Kendall? I really, really, really don't want to see Jason Kendall in a Brewer uni in 2010. Really.
  3. I assume Gerut will be back next year, and cheaper hopefully. Whether he starts or not depends on the Brewers/Cameron. There really is no other internal option, so Gerut would be the man for the time being should Cameron not come back. I don't think it matters all that much from a W/L perspective. let Cameron go... but does he get offered arbitration to net the picks?
  4. Its fairly clear that Gamel will be the Brewers 3rd string 3B next year. Personally, I would go with only two 3B, but they could be concerned about long term health of the starter and his backup.
  5. My widget tells me Butler is penciled in to start on Friday against Pedro.
  6. Bill Hall was 1 for 6 yesterday with 3 Ks, but hit the game tying HR in the bottom of the 9th. I guess there is a little light left, even though his line in Seattle looks like .238/.283/.405. I am not so sure Bill Hall will be on Seattle's active roster when they come calling at Miller Park next year.
  7. It was refreshing to see a Brewer come out of the bullpen and offer up some 95-96 mph fastballs with actual movement on them. Now if he can command that pitch, he will be awfully tough to hit, ala Marmol, where the only time he will get in trouble is when he is hitting and walking batters.
  8. I was just thinking... 81 local games next year in Milwaukee! My first reaction was to suggest the annual road trip take us to Anaheim of Los Angeles of Orange County, but I don't think we would play well with Angels fans. We keep it too real. I am going to go with the new stadium trip to the Twin Cities recommendation.
  9. Have they set a date for the Macha firing yet? Seems like they have been mulling it over for some time now.
  10. I'd bet Milwaukee needs to offer him another contract that is equal to or more than a possible contract offered by another team.
  11. That could be us in a few years too if we have to say goodbye to hall-of-fame talents like Prince Fielder. These are the type of players you dream of drafting and you hate to give up the most. People won't even get excited in the future if we draft a good player because the guy will eventually leave and it will once again be a painful reminder that baseball doesn't care about people in cities like ours. The scary part is this is a very likely scenario. Teams like the Brewers are unable to keep their homegrown talent. Biggest problem with the MLB by far. Melvin has his work cut out for him. The team and fan base are very fragile, and all it will take is a bad trade involving Prince Fielder and some more losing to knock the average attendance back down to 21K/game.
  12. While I still feel the Brewers are Big League, I do feel Milwaukee is fortunate to have a pro baseball team. While fans and residents in Chicago probably feel entitled to have a pro sports team.
  13. So the Rays get nothing for being on untold million households with YES. They do get revenue from their home broadcast partner, but you are right in a sense. They do not benefit from being watched in NY, only from those watching in the Bay area. This is the ultimate source of the problem, and not necessarily ticket sales. The NFL has national broadcast rights, and revenue is distributed to all teams. YES goes directly to the Yankees, which allows them to spend $200+MM on contracts and still make a fortune on the season. They could put out a $300MM team and still turn a profit. All because of broadcast revenue. Since it takes two to play a game, this seems unfair and unbalanced. Teams 9-30 should threaten to break away from MLB and form their own league, one that's structured to benefit the LEAGUE and not just three or four teams. Let the other 8 teams have the MLB (Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, White Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, Phillies, and Mets). See how they like an 8 team league.
  14. I certainly don't want the type of competitive balance that is in the NFL... Personally, I would love to see NFL type balance in the MLB. The fact that 20+ teams have a chance at a championship each year is part of what makes the NFL the most popular league in the US. Would the league really be better if the Bears could have signed Brett Favre in 1996 because they were offering $5MM more per year than the Packers could offer?
  15. So they all fell down, when the big guy jumped on the plate, instead of all piling on him, possibly injuring someone. So what, big deal. What's ironic is I heard the argument against the celebration refer to the possibility of someone getting hurt while falling backward. Mobbing someone and beating them over the head seems to open the door to possibly injury more so if you ask me.
  16. It was a creative twist on the traditional mobbing that usually happens at home plate. I don't see the difference, and would rather see something fresh than the same thing over and over. The mobbing is orchestrated as well, and the fact that it is "normal" has no bearing on whether it is planned or not.
  17. The answer is 87. Thanks Baldkin. It shows the extra .043 OBP hasn't helped the Brewers score many more runs than the 2005 Mets with Reyes leading off. Probably more of an anomaly though.
  18. Absolutely. The fact that Patterson is drawing a check from the Brewers organization should cause Attanasio to re-evaluate his decision maker's competency. Who should have led off for the 2005 Mets? Cliff Floyd, Mike Cameron, or David Wright? All other regulars OBP was .330 or lower, and they were .322 as a team. Randolph didn't have a lot of options, or good OBP guys. Reyes was being groomed to be the franchise leadoff hitter, and had a .334 OBP in 2003. Whose to say that Reyes would have put up .350+ OBP ever since had he not had a full year in 2005? The Mets could have waited on him until 2007, but he still might have needed a year to adjust to be an overly effective leadoff hitter. The answer always seems to come back to "he's wasn't ready," or "he needs more time in the minors." When there is a need, and no serviceable stopgap, how can that be placed on the manager? Reyes learned as a leadoff hitter, and now he is one of the best in the league. I would like to see Escobar be run the same way next year. Reyes scored 99 runs that year. How many runs have our leadoff hitters combined for this year?
  19. Listening to Macha on the pre-game today talk about a "surprise" pitcher for Sunday, when TH already knew what he was talking about (Narveson), and pretty much listening to why he sat Escobar against Arroyo, why he's playing Kendall everyday, etc. is more painful than listening to Yost tell me how much I don't know about the game. To be honest, at least Yost was comical from time to time. Macha is just grandpa dumb imo. PS - he just can't stay out of the zim zams.
  20. Pedro Cerano! 3TO - WOOOHOOOO! Gimme some more of that raw power!
  21. I can't possibly be supportive of Macha coming back next year. He is the anti-progressive. He has shown over the past month that he has no clue as to what he is doing. I can clearly see why Beane had enough, even after winning seasons and playoff appearances. Blech.
  22. I wonder if Shane Stant is available for some Cardinal knee bashing.
  23. Pippens has is right, the rest of the round table (Brainerd/Sanders) on today's on deck show going with the old school viewpoint. At least people are talking about the Brewers?
  24. I liked the Frank Howard bobble I got in DC. It was classic and made me interested in learning more about the player, seeing how he was a bit before my time. I would look to some Milwaukee Braves as bobble options, if the licensing could be worked out with the current Braves club.
  25. I for one am very tired of Brian Anderson mentioning this every single Braun at-bat, and every single half inning preceding a Braun at-bat. My favorite last night was when BA said, "a double play ends the game, a home run gives them the lead." Needless to say, I dislike Brian Anderson very much. I watched nearly the entire first set of the Nadal-Monfrils match last night during the Vargas 8th. One time I flipped back after nearly 2 minutes and did not miss a pitch. I would be hard pressed to come up with a slower pitcher in the history of the game. So painful.
