  1. Maybe this will lead us toward scratching the 162-game season altogether, which would be a plus in my opinion. There are all sorts of creative ideas out there--they could play a fully-balanced 80 or 90 game schedule that ends at the all-star break. Then the teams get split into two groups, playing two separate round-robin tournaments consisting of best-of-5 series (stats count for regular season). The top tier is for postseason seeding and the lower for international pool money and draft rankings. Then a traditional postseason based on the results of the top-tier round robin tournament. Make it extra fun by allowing one or two of the lower-tier teams into the postseason and eliminating some of the top-tier teams after the round robin. For me baseball is part of my daily routine. I miss the games the few days they have off. That's part of it being America's pastime. Listening to the game while playing with my dog is near religion to me. It's that daily experience that creates the connection to the team and players which drive me to take in an occasional game in person. Making it half of the days and I lose that connection. Then it would be just a sport.
  2. Maybe I'm just just playing devils advocate here but is Manfred the problem or is this sort of a killing the messenger thing? I really don't know if he's the voice or the brain.
  3. Seriously? For 10 days straight crowds of tens of thousands have gathered in close proximity in virtually ever major city. Let me get this straight, it's fine to march in demonstrations regardless of health consequences because that's their constitutional right but people can't gather in churches (also protected by Constitution) or pursue happiness (spelled out in Declaration of Independence) by going to a ballgame? I never got the "all or nothing" about sports. 15,000 people can rattle around in Miller Park and maintain plenty of distance. We don't know the covid consequesces of those riots yet. Might be best to wait to make the "somebody else did it so I can" argument until we know that.
  4. This Monday will be the first day I will not have to work since mid March. Which should give me enough time to clean the house, mow the lawn, plant the garden, fix the broken lattice on the trellis, brush the dog and paint the porch.
  5. I'd add that kids who don't get it as fast as others might be more inclined to ask for help without feeling stupid.

  7. Which is why we need a national testing program up and running as soon as possible. Without one there will be no getting back to anything near normal. Especially if people don't become immune to it after getting it.
  8. I've posited this question before but with the news that people may not be immune after getting it it's worth asking again; What happens if this virus acts more like a cold than the flu? That would mean there is no vaccine on the way and no possibility of herd immunity for the foreseeable future.
  9. The first person I personally know just died from Covid19. Not someone I knew of but one I knew well and considered a friend since the 80's. We were two of eight founding members of our highschool wrestling club in 1982. I coached his son and we always made time to talk to each other everytime we were at an event together. It's hard to think of him in his last days alone, suffering until he passed away. It sucks I can't even go to his funeral. Rest in peace Al. You deserved a better end.
  10. Today someone called us and wanted us to deliver balloons to someone at a nursing home. I said we won't do that. They said it wasn't for someone living there it was for someone coming to work after going through Chemotherapy. I said it isn't wise to send someone who may still have some immunity issues anything right now. They said they weren't worried about that. I said goodbye.
  11. Whatever the official count was I find it hard to beleive China would shut down major portions of their country and tank their economy if they thought only a few hundred thousand out of 1.386 billion people had it. Not saying they intentionally hid anything or not. Just saying I think they believed the number of cases was much higher than the official count and rapidly spreading.
  12. I want them to keep talking. Maybe at some point we'll realize what they really are and stop viewing fame or wealth as a virtue.
  13. Madonna did a video saying how coronavirus was the great equalizer. Apparently unaware that doing so in bathtub filled with rose petals, in a room bigger than my house showed the exact opposite. I can't imagine how tough it is to stay put in an apartment.
  14. A lady from Michigan called to set up a no contact in-your-yard-a-gram (looking for suggestions for a better term) and she told me the weed shops are doing curb side pickup. She said she never thought she'd see the day when it was easier to get weed than toilet paper. At least people haven't lost their sense of humor yet.
  15. Entirely depends on where the surgery was done. For example, there hasn’t been a confirmed case within 45 miles of my house. The main hospital near me could easily perform those types of procedures yet. It still requires masks, glove and gowns for all the surgical team. Something we are in short supply of now. At least wait until the supplies needed to deal with Covid-19 are up to speed.

  17. The cost of being one of the most durable is the number of pitches thrown go up which means the wear and tear on the body goes up. There are always going to be notable exceptions but generally speaking more use raises the odds of breaking down.
  18. It's also reason not to use pitchers 200+ innings four out of five years in a row.
  19. My dogs are very happy. Something I was surprised by is how many people want us to deliver balloons as the gorilla. We tell them all we are willing to do is wave from the yard and put the balloons by the door. We call them when we're there and they watch from the window. People are odd.
  20. How about just increasing unemployment benefits? When I've collected unemployment benefits in the past, it was a fraction of my income. Increase the maximum payout. Then those who need it will get it. While that has to be part of the strategy it isn't enough on it's own. It doesn't do anything for a large section of the population. The self employed, gig or freelance workers are all ineligible for unemployment. Some of it also has to be sharing the pain. For instance all of the businesses who rent their space can't be expected to pay full price when they can't even open their doors.
  21. Mod edit Take it to the political board.
  22. On the financial side the event planning sector is really being hit hard. Pretty much every event for the next couple months already cancelled for us. It's the same all over. Given how much 2008 hurt our savings I really have no idea if this one is survivable without some form of help. We've always been prudent with spending and saved as much as we could over the years. We have enough to survive until about July. That would pretty much wipe out our entire savings. I have no idea how people who didn't have time to set aside that much or recoup the losses caused by the recession will do.
  23. Maynard might get upset at being classified, but Tool is definitely metal. I actually have two tickets for the June show in Madison, so I'm hoping the Coronavirus stuff doesn't upset the tour plans. As much as I think MJK is a pretentious d-bag, their music is amazing and twice I've had tickets to see them live, and once they got cancelled, and the second time I had work obligations that I could not get out of. If you've never seen them live it really is worth it. I saw them years ago in Green Bay. They were the first band to play in the Resch center. Twas amazing. Really the best group of overall musicians barring Rush I have ever seen live.
