  1. Is it just me or does Stearns seem not to care very much about velocity in an age were velocity is all the rage? I think he sees soft tossers who just get outs as an undervalued commodity.
  2. No, they didn't, and the service was terrible. I did stop in one time at like 8pm because I thought there would be no line. Line was like 4 cars with 2 drive through lanes. Took me 20 minutes. Maybe that's why the lines were so long.
  3. I agree but I wonder if the players see it that way. In the NFL a lot of money isn't guaranteed like it is in baseball. Taking the QO in baseball might give the player a higher annual salary but a lower annual salary for more years is better protection from injury or ineffectiveness that NFL players don't have either way.
  4. I get not voting for him number one but to leave him off altogether is hard to understand. It isn't like he was a fringe candidate. He got the most first place votes and it isn't like this season is a one hit wonder.
  5. This should not be overlooked. Guess that's why you're the roster guru. It gives the team a boost in the farm without adding to the 40 man roster. Even if he doesn't pan out that 40 man spot might be used to keep a fringe player in the fold who turns it around like Grisham did. While he hasn't shown great promise so far, it adds depth to a system that lacked it. I think a major aspect of keeping a decent feeder system in place is doing this sort of thing. Trading spare or redundant major league parts to add to the overall talent level of the minors is helpful to maintaining long term viability.
  6. Wouldn't be the first time in the last decade that an older, not highly regarded 3rd baseman for the Brewers has a couple good years and completely falls apart. There is a reason McGehee was picked up for nothing and the Brewers had to trade an above average major league reliever for Shaw. Shaw was a much better prospect than McGehee. McGehee had zero seasons in the minors with an OPS above 800. Shaw had one below it. Shaw's worst minor league numbers were close to McGehee's average season. Hell Shaw's bad season in Boston was only slightly worse than McGehee's career minor league numbers. Shaw may never be as good as he was his first two years here but to think he's more likely to put up last season's numbers going forward than what he did the rest of his career seems overly pessimistic.
  7. Are you willing to take that gamble, and possibly be left with the blackest of black holes at an offensive position that needs to be productive? If Shaw tanks again, and that is what I am expecting, and you add him to Pina and Arcia, we better be upgrading the starting pitching or it could be a long LONG season. Why are you expecting it? Not trying to be a wienie about it given the season he had. I'm just interesting in your reasoning behind that expectation. Is it because it hurts less to expect nothing, are you hoping to be pleasantly surprised, is there something in his hitting profile you don't like or some other reason altogether?
  8. Just like these crap teams are crap until they prove they are not, the Brewers are contenders until they prove they are not. The Brewers have a ton of talent coming back, even if they lose Moose and Grandal. It's obviously a long way from opening day, but this team is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances. I don't think there is any reason to believe that they are suddenly going to be bad. Just to add to that, it isn't like everything went right for them this season. They didn't have a bunch of guys with career years or exceptional luck on the injury front. If anything it's the other way around. I think most players see the Brewers as legitimate contenders which is what matters when it comes to free agents looking for a place to compete for a title.
  9. The reason Grandal took the one year offer last season was because he didn't want to lower the average annual salary for catchers by taking a lower AAV multi year deal. He mentioned how those who came before him created the market that got him that much per year and he wasn't going to be the one who lowered it for future players. So I doubt he's going to take a lower deal just to stick with the better team.
  10. Speaking of sloppy Joes, I always though Hermes line of "My Manwich" on Futurama was funny. I also wonder if anyone else wonders how sloppy Joe must have been to go down in culinary history for it. If we can answer that maybe we can tackle why Luke is always warm.
  11. I think this is proof that WAR is indeed NOT the best stat. bWAR has it... Higuera (30.3) Sheets (25.6) Bosio (18.6) Wegman (17.8) Caldwell (17.3) Haas (15.7) Slaton (15.5) Gallardo (15.3) fWAR has it... Sheets (31.9) Higuera (26.7) Haas (20.9) Bosio (20.5) Gallardo (17.5) Caldwell (16.2) Wegman (13.7) Slaton (13.5) Who do you believe the WAR calculations are over/undervaluing & why? When two WAR's tell different stories doesn't that pretty much sum up the problem with WAR in general?
  12. Personally I'd put Rollie Fingers in there before CC or Hader at this point. Obviously if Hader keeps it up he'll surpass Fingers but dude was special in 81-82.
  13. This is the first decade since 1910 -19 that the Yankees didn't appear in a single World Series.
  14. I think Jordan is the greatest athlete of any sport. I think Gretzky could give him a run but that is the only player I can think of who maybe as good or better than Jordan. In the NFL I don't see anyone who can challenge those two same with MLB maybe Ted Williams if he didn't go to war twice. I think Bo Jackson - an all-star in baseball and football - deserves to be in that conversation. Jordan was much more successful, but I'd put Jackson as the better athlete. Deion Sanders belongs in the conversation as well - perhaps the best DB/KR of all time and good enough to be a competent MLB player. FWIW, while Jordan was a decent baseball player, I don't know if he ever makes the majors (on merit), much less the MLB All Star game. It's impossible to say who's the best over every sport but Simone Biles is literally making the sport rewrite the code of points because she's doing things previously thought impossible. What's more, it's not like gymnastics is a fringe sport with few participants. It probably has more participants in it than hockey, basketball and football combined.
  15. A 26 man roster could help as much as hurt guys like Perez. Teams can afford to keep a versatile, glove first guy on the bench because they don't need him a a PH as much. Teams could use guys like him for defense later in games. Every team's circumstance is different and every team is going to use that extra spot for different purposes. Overall I really don't see how adding 30 more major league spots hurts any bench type player. If he can't get a job it won't be because there are 30 more openings.
  16. Just because one tribe is okay with it doesn't mean all tribes have to be okay with it. I basically agreed with your position so far but the Seminoles were the tribe the team was named after.
  17. PETA has long moved on from animal rights to fund raising for profit but at least they have a sense of humor.
  18. I think the best part about this season is the same as last season. It isn't the end of a long rebuild culminating in "the" shot at the title. It is just another year where we had a legitimate shot at it. There is no reason to think next season will be any different except perhaps a better ending. Putting out a competitive team ear in and year out is the promise Stearns and company made to us. So far they have kept it.
  19. We donate a small balloon bunch to every charity that asks. We never give much because there are so many who ask if we gave much we'd end up needing the charity. Most people are perfectly fine with it but once in a while we get someone who either asks for more or only wants cash. I really hate it when they try to guilt you into a larger donation. Like somehow we don't care about sick children because we only gave a $10 valued gift for their auction. We give what we can but sometimes the sheer number of requests make it expensive.
  20. Why would he assume we'd complain? It's not like there is a rivalry between us and them.
  21. The season is setting up to remove the final postseason hurdle, jinx, curse... whatever you want to call it. Beating the Cardinals in a head to head match up in the NLCS. I'm not sure if it would be sweeter to win the division or do it as a wild card like they did to us in 2011.
  22. Re-reading this thread in the light of the subsequent 7 weeks of baseball, and tonight's playoff-clinching win, has been enlightening. To paraphrase one poster, so many in this thread posted opinions as facts. I'm glad I never attended the "funeral", makes this run all the sweeter. Go Crew! I was amused to learn that there is at least one person who misses Ned Yost as manager. Which is absolutely hilarious. To be fair Ned Yost has one of the highest post season winning percentages of all time and has the most wins in KC history. That said even I, an unapologetic Yost fan, prefer Counsell. Especially in late and post season. It seems to me the post season is more like September baseball than it is the rest of the regular season. The most games in a row they play is three. That means less starters are needed which adds to the bullpen depth that's already more rested due to the off days.
  23. The payroll was only as low as it was few years ago was because most of their in house talent was in their prearby years. I disagree that money doesn't mean anything to them either. Some of those core players are going to get expensive soon and they don't have a very good farm system to keep the payroll down. I doubt the Cubs are going to want to pay a luxury tax every year unless it is a near guarantee they win the division year in and year out. If they have a couple years of luxury taxes and only a single postseason game they lost to show for it I doubt they are going to be all that interested in paying an even higher rate going forward forever.
  24. Crawling on a fractured kneecap is probably not a good idea. Rolling would be the way to go.
