  1. Relying in Swarzak to repeat what he did this season is likely to backfire. I'd be ok with resigning him if he comes at a discount or with a lot of performance incentives. If we do I'd like us to find a guy with a longer track record of success to go along with him if he does stumble. As to predicting how good the pen could be, every team every year has the same degree of certainty. None at all. It may very well be the most unpredictable, volatile role from year to year in all of sports. We could have kept Smith, Thornburg and Jeffress this season for example and the pen would have been worse because of it.
  2. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2017/10/27/a-wisconsin-man-got-locked-in-a-walk-in-beer-cooler-he-had-everything-that-he-needed-police-say/?utm_term=.127ec9ef0f36 I think any crime that involves tipping over 30 packs of Busch beer pretty much has to come from Wisconsin or the UP.
  3. I like Perez and think he fits in well with how the Brewers like to use their players but I doubt he has much trade value. There are guys like that on every team. Hell we have three. Teams don't waste resources trading for something fairly easy to get on the open market or waiver wire. So keep him around and let the chips fall where they may. Chances are one of those guys ends up injured or simply doesn't perform and we will need the ones who don't wash out to contribute.
  4. That's the way I look at it. I usually shake my fist and yell at them to get off my lawn too. It's easier than figuring out a whole new way of winning baseball games.

  6. I think that right there is why Sogard is here and Gennett is not. For bench players how they fit is as important as overall production. The Brewers don't have a lot of batters who take walks so he brings something to the table we don't have a lot of. That is worth a couple million when taking his versatility and defense into account.
  7. Totally agree we can't compare ourselves to the Cubs. They could afford to focus on offense and buy the pitching when the farm produced the offense to make it worthwhile. We'll have to rely on the farm system far more than the Cubs did. The question is how do we use the farm? What type of trades do we make and how many prospects is acceptable to lose for any one player? Do we trade our next Prince Fielder with a year left or trade the prospects to keep a Prince Fielder type around a year longer while surrounding him with more veteran talent? When it comes to how to treat the farm system I have changed my views on trading the farm for Greinke type of talent because of what happened the last time we had a great farm and did that. I want more than two playoff appearances and zero championships before the inevitable rebuild. Seems to me the best way to do that is to stay young and maintain a strong farm system instead of trading them to build a super team for a short window.
  8. Having Cain and Escobar would have helped the pitching. It isn't like Marco Estrada was garbage and all the other guys on that staff would still have been there without the Greinke trade. Given how much better our defense would have been with Escobar playing short instead of Yuni I'm not so certain we were all that much better off even in the short term. We also would have had more money to spend to boost our bullpen without the Greinke contract. I think what it boils down to is I don't think any one player makes the difference. I think we would have had as much talent for longer had we kept the farm intact.
  9. We made the playoffs? The problem is doing that only gets you one, at most two, shots at it. Then you get 5-10 years of mediocre to awful baseball. If the goal is to win a single championship fine. If the goal is to have a competitive team year in and year out, presumably in an effort to win multiple championships, not so fine. I'd prefer to follow a good team every year over reminiscing about that one magical year.
  10. The Houston Astros would greatly disagree with you. Especially if they can pull off one more win against the Yankees. Justin Verlander has been a hero. Not to mention they have many more years of Quintana to make him useful anyway. While Houston's trade for Verlander is working out in the short term it also had a long term implication. For a team like the Brewers it is not wise to give up the farm for one or two years. Look what happened last time we gave up the farm for one pitcher. Quintana would have cost us Hader plus other very high prospects. Considering how much Hader has already helped us in the short term I'm not overly convinced Quintana would have helped us win more games last season than Hader did.
  11. I think the lesson I would take away is don't trade the farm for one player.
  12. Wash in hot water then go through a dryer. It if it makes clothes smaller it might work on people too.
  13. Some of us don't wait until the season is over to question decisions. I predicted the day it happened that letting Gennett go would come back and bite them, and that letting the Cubs fix their rotation coming out of the break by nabbing a guy the Brewers were interested in was a fatal mistake. I agree with the sentiment that when you miss by one game it's a major disappointment. We have no idea when things will fall into place and give the Brewers the kind of opportunity they had in 2017. Stearns made some small moves that helped but he hesitated on the big move they needed. Saying no to trading Hader plus a couple other top prospects wasn't a mistake let alone a fatal one.
  14. Literally every team in the league could have had more wins if they could use hindsight to base every decision on.
  15. Different thing, I've decided to try and replace my daily energy drink. I'm in both a rush and a haze in the morning so I don't make coffee. The energy drinks really help, but they're sooooooo bad for you. I ordered some caffeine which'll dissolve in hot water, a multivitamin for the B12, and powdered vegetable drink for the magnesium and because it's vegetables. I'm going to add it to some green tea and stevia. I plan on waterbath canning it all to just grab one in the morning to replace the energy drink. I was hoping I would save some money with it, but the supplements make it about the same price. If you're willing to put that much work into it you can just cold brew coffee and have coffee ready in about a minute in the morning. Cold brewing makes a coffee concentrate that you just add hot water to make a normal strength coffee. It has the additional advantage of being very low acid so, less gut gurgles. Without that acidity you can also up the caffeine content without making it bitter or too strong to drink. It's also what is used for cold coffee drinks so you can go that route as well. The actual brewing process is simple. You just soak the ground beans overnight and strain it the next day. I make it by the pound and put the rest in the fridge. Cold brewer systems are fairly cheap to buy but it is very simple to make one yourself. All it takes is a container with a hole in the bottom, a food grade plug for the hole and some coffee filters.
  16. At this point I view a health productive Braun as a luxury more than a necessity. It would be great if he is healthy and productive but we have enough outfield depth that another season like this one wouldn't derail the entire campaign.
  17. Neither Braun's nor Fielder's contracts would have bought out any arby years. As far as small market teams needing to do them or risk becoming the A's which small market team did one of those crazy long contracts and did better because of it? I don't think teams need super stars in their prime to win. They need a lot of good players more than they need a couple super stars eating up half the payroll.
  18. Probably had a lot to do with why he was on Roids in the 1st Place. Incredible genetics for playing Baseball. Not so great genetics for durability. Very ironic but after all those discussions as to who to sign long term, Fielder or Braun, the correct answer was "neither". I hope management learns their lesson and forgoes those types of signings in the future. I have no problem paying a player a lot of money as long as the length of the contract is three or less years.
  19. This is a bit out there but I wonder if Domingo Santana is around next season. Braun is going to be here. Phillips and Broxton would make a good platoon in center and we need a place for Brinson sooner than later. Santana is a very good offensive threat but he is also a liability in the field. He could bring a lot more in return if we trade him and have Broxton as the 4th outfielder/weak side of a platoon.
  20. I haven't seen the movie It but I have sold a lot of red balloons because of it. Might have to go see it just to give a little back.
  21. I doubt he comes back good as new right away. The best we can hope for is he gets to play enough in 2018 to work out the kinks for 2019.
  22. Technically it isn't considered a business. Baseball has an antitrust exemption that no other business gets because it isn't considered a normal business. Therefore, while I don't expect him to lose money, I also don't expect him to make a profit on it either. Frankly, I think more people should expect the same out of all the teams. The profit is in the value of the franchises themselves.
  23. That very well may be true. My dog is a sociopath. If I died she wouldn't even wait until she was hungry to start eating me.
  24. According to Adam McCalvy Wilkerson wouldn't be post season eligible if they put Nelson on the 60 day DL and used that spot to call him up.
