  1. A-Rod passed Eddie Murray today for #9 on the All-Time RBI list. He is now behind only Aaron, Ruth, Cap Anson, Bonds, Gehrig, Musial, Cobb, and Foxx. He'll pass Foxx with 5 more and pass Cobb with 21 more....
  2. I don't think it is too much of a stretch of the imagination to say that the Brewers wouldn't have won today's game if someone other than Maldonado was behind the plate. How many breaking balls in the dirt did he block?
  3. The thing is, Votto & Braun are not equals offensively. Votto is better and this year he is significantly better (we'll see if that continues)
  4. Disagree. Stricter steroids testing now. And Jeter has been light years more clutch in the postseason. I'd take Jeter over A-Rod any day
  5. yeah, thinking about it more, I would trade Braun for Votto. Although Votto's horrible postseason stats scare me a little, I'd chalk it up to a small sample anomaly
  6. Just another day at the office today for Votto, as he has a Double and 2 walks today. He now has a .484 OBP on the season and has 26 Doubles already. The MLB single season record is 67, that would be amazing if Votto broke it....(he's on pace for 73)
  7. I don't think Votto will hit .400 in a season, but he could have several seasons of .350 or better, including this year. Barring injuries or a very steep decline, he could be the type of player who ends his career with a .325+ career batting average and 400 Home Runs and a .425+ OBP. I see him as somewhat of a modern day Stan Musial, though not quite as good as Stan the Man. I do think Votto is the best player in the game right now....
  8. Rickie Weeks for "Comeback Player of the Year 2013"
  9. Unlike the iron-clad Braun, of course. well, true, Braun does get dinged up a fair amount. But he has yet to go on the DL in his career and has averaged about 155 games a season in his career. Tulo missed 61 games in '08, 40 games in '10, 19 games in '11, and is back on the DL right now. That is a pretty significant difference. Then, considering that Tulo has a .868 career OPS along with a 118 career OPS+ compared to Braun's .937 career OPS with a 146 career OPS+, I don't think Tulo's superior defense makes up for it
  10. This topic is one of the reasons why Warren Spahn deserves to be in the Top 5 of All-Time, in my opinion. In addition to pitching for 22 seasons with a career 3.09 ERA, and never getting hurt, he also pitched in relief quite a bit, too....most seasons he would start about 38 games, have around 20-25 complete games, and 3 or 4 saves, too
  11. I have a 9 year old who is a baseball fanatic and with summer vacation fast approaching we are interested in any Baseball instructional opportunities for him that we might not be aware of. Are there any former Brewers players in Southern Wisconsin or in Milwaukee that have baseball camps or clinics? We have him signed up for some Brad Woodall clinics in Madison. Woodall is a really fantastic teacher and my son has learned a lot from him.
  12. MLB Network was speculating that the Brewers might trade Marcum if things don't get turned around soon...
  13. I would definitely not trade Braun for Tulowitzki. Tulo is way too injury prone I would trade Braun for Jeter if I could get the 1999 version of Jeter in a "time machine deal". Considering everything, no I would not trade Braun for anyone. I'd trade him for a combination of Trout and Trumbo, but I wouldn't trade Braun for any one player. Strasburg would be tempting, but the injury risk is too great
  14. Check out Tom Seaver moving into 3rd place. Nice to see the breakup of the dominance in the Top 3 spots of pitchers who played in All-White leagues 100 or so years ago
  15. Adam Jones deserves a start in the AL. Maybe it is because I've been focusing on Hall of Fame players lately but this list, outside of Votto, Hamilton, Braun, Jeter and David Wright, looks a little underwhelming to me.
  16. Because it is true that you do not know how your opponent's bottom of the order is going to hit, the 7th inning might be too early to bring your best relief pitcher in against your opponent's 3-4-5 hitters (an example being Axford retires the 3-4-5 hitters in the 7th, but Loe/Veras give up lots of walks/hits in the 8th and now the 3-4-5 hitters are coming up again in the 9th) However, once you get into the 8th inning, if your opponent's 3-4-5 hitters are coming up, that is when your best relief pitcher should come in.... I'd much rather have Axford vs a team's 3-4-5 in the 8th and then K-Rod vs a team's 6-7-8 in the 9th then the other way around
  17. This is one of my favorite topics in baseball strategy. Generally speaking, it is logical to use your best relief pitcher against your opponents best hitters late in the game, regardless of what inning it is. As an example, it'd be better to have Axford facing Votto in the 7th inning then wait and put him in during the 9th inning just because he is the designated "closer". But then there is the human element of the game. Apparently some pitchers just don't have the mental makeup to pitch in the 9th inning in a "save situation".
  18. Good to see Pedro and Koufax moving up.... Maddux & Alexander are almost tied at 5 & 6 and similarily the 11-15 spots are extremely close
  19. Love the high ceiling roll of the dice with Victor Roache. The kid is a potential superstar. 2-3 years from now he could be hitting clean-up behind Ryan Braun
  20. I don't think the Brewers should go after Youkilis. If we could get the 2008 version of Youkilis that'd be great but the 2012 version has just a .322 OBP and is slower than Gorman Thomas (and Gorman is 61 years old!)
  21. Anyone who hits 600 Home Runs without the assistance of steroids is an All-Time Great, no matter what our perceptions are of their value.
  22. I'd rather have Maldonado starting (if he can hit .225 that is) and find another position for Lucroy, who could likely be a .310/.375 hitter every year if he only had to catch once every five days. I think a great defensive catcher makes a huge difference over the course of a game and a season. An easy recent example would be Yadier Molina, who hit .216/.275 in 2006 for the Cardinals as they won the division and then the World Championship
  23. I was going to add: if you were going to say that Ted Williams or Ty Cobb would be even better in today's time then they were in their eras, because they were obsessive-compulsive about hitting and would have made full use of today's technology and advance scouting reports and would be "Captain Videos" like Tony Gwynn and been able to study pitchers even more, I'd buy that (although we would have to discuss the fact that Cobb & Williams played all or part of their careers in easier leagues that weren't integrated, so we'd have to adjust for that... but I digress) However, Adam Dunn & Harmon Killebrew are very similar hitters (Killebrew was a vastly better fielder). You put Adam Dunn in a Time Machine and take him to any era and he's going to turn on fastballs and hit 40 bombs a year, in any time. And he'd walk a lot and strike out a ton and hit about .240
  24. I struggle a little with OPS+ and comparing various eras. I have no reason to believe that Dunn wouldn't be the exact same hitter in Killebrew's time. No better no worse. And I don't believe that Killebrew would be any better or worse playing in today's era either. Just because there were less sluggers in Killebrew's time, or the average OPS was lower or whatever, shouldn't hurt Dunn when comparing him to Killebrew
  25. I really don't think 500 is going to be "magic mark" anymore. I think that is going to be moved to 600 When Jim Thome hit 500, I don't think he was thought of as an inevitable HOF'er. But now that he has 600 I think the majority thinking is "oh he'll definitely get in"....
