That is indeed a good sign. Keep it going Brett!!!! Well said. I agree. I will say that I will be very very surprised if Santana is in the starting lineup in a year or two
Broxton can actually play defense. I don't have high hopes for Santana but remain optimistic. There are times he looks lost at the plate and looks like a very average LF trying to play RF Meanwhile, Phillips hasn't done much, hitting wise since 2015. Cordell has been off and on. Ray is still a few years off if he even develops to MLB quality.
yes I personally find the herd mentality of ganging up on JohnBriggs12 here distasteful. Disagree with him on opinions but leave the name calling out. Varying opinions are valued, to me, it gets me thinking, keeps my mind open to other points of view. Moderators: if this post is off limits or too far off topic I apologize.
Wait? Am I lost? I thought this was the Optimism Thread (!) In addition to some of the newest/newer MLB Brewers playing much better than expected (Shaw/Thames/Pina/Bandy etc) Josh Hader has a 2.57 ERA in 3 starts in AAA and Lewis Brinson has started the season in AAA hitting .355/.412/.645 That gives me plenty of optimism about the future
Shaw plus Dubon is more valuable than Thornburg longterm, just as: if Thornburg was healthy and if Thornburg was able to get the 4 out save today a win today, that would not be as valuable as the longterm value of Shaw & Dubon
Best window for getting the game in looks to be between 5pm-11pm. Mother Nature is of course unpredictable https://weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/l/USIL0225:1:US
I wonder how strictly the Dominican players get tested before they sign? Not a lot of incentive for them not to do steroids when they are looking at millions in signing bonuses and guaranteed contracts
Weeks was a DH today in Boston Meanwhile JA Happ might be out with an elbow injury. Blue Jays are going from bad to worse in a hurry Don't look now but Thames has twice as many HR's as Mike Trout
Of course as snake bit Brewers fans we are waiting for the other shoe to drop: maybe it is PED's, maybe he won't stay healthy, maybe it is just a small sample and he'll be a bust or maybe, just maybe, he's the real deal
Lux is interesting in part because he is a Wisconsin kid. Not a sure thing to stick at SS but likely. Questions as to whether he'll develop power. He's also currently injured, though it appears to be relatively minor (rib injury).
Or, another way to look at it is only Doug Melvin could have that much talent mostly just handed to him and screw up so badly as to only have 2 playoff appearances. The Greinke trade was horrible for the Brewers, hindsight being 20/20. Greinke was barely above average during his time in Milwaukee and we gave the Royals the nucleus of their WS teams. Most of those home grown Brewers were draft picks given to Melvin, right? Did he make the final selections? Melvin was the only GM stupid enough to think Yuni B could be a starting SS on a contending team....etc etc I could go on & on
I am sure Braun doesn't actually think he can play SS. I am sure he does. I bet Bumgarner thinks he should play 1st and bat cleanup when he's not pitching. Carlos Gomez always asked Roenicke to let him play Short and let him pitch. The level of confidence it takes just to step onto an MLB field is (literally) unreal. It is up to the coaches to put limits on the players. Anyways, I thought it was funny, of course he can't play Short in MLB (he did in college at least), but gotta admire the guys swagger
I love how Braun believes he could play SS in MLB right now. Gotta have mental toughness & confidence to play Baseball. Meanwhile, in terms of his age: it really depends on what you think of his talent level. Was it mostly because of steroids? Or is he (in terms of talent) an All-Time Great/Hall of Fame type talent?. Willie Mays' best season was at age 34. Ted Williams & Stan Musial had a few of their best seasons in their late 30's. Hank Aaron had tremendous seasons at age 36-38. Now I'm not saying Braun is an upper echelon All-Time great compared to those names, but his early career stats suggest he was/is just a tick below those guys. If it wasn't all steroids, there are reasons to suspect he can have very productive years in the next several seasons
In a rebuilding year it is smart to take Anderson out before he's running on fumes (actually I believe it is always smart to do that but that is perhaps another topic) I cringe when I think of all the meaningless innings Ben Sheets threw in his early career. And by the time the Brewers finally made the playoffs, Sheets was done. Every pitcher has a limited amount of bullets, folks!
That line drive to right yesterday was fantastic. Bautista made a great catch on it. Contrary to my original post, I think the issue is mostly pitch selection. Which I think he can evolve on.
Jonathan Villar was servicable at SS and quite a player the way he hit last year. Right now he is struggling heavily with some of the different ways he has to turn DPs and throw in general at 2B that he didn't really do at SS. He racked up quite a few errors, but he had the range/arm to make up for a lot of it. I think I read that the advance stats said he was horrible at SS last year. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong. Horrible is relative. Was he "Ryan Braun at 3B" horrible? No, and he was better than Yuni B. But he was certainly below average by MLB standards
