  1. I like it! Otani could bat in the middle of the order when he pitches and DH in AL parks when he isn't pitching, too http://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.cgi?id=otani-000sho
  2. Let them earn it. All the Catchers will get opportunities and reps. Let's see who is who after the dust settles
  3. All of these are on FSN-Wisconsin. Of course a few more might be on MLB Network. I always look forward to watching these Spring Training games Saturday, Feb. 25, at Los Angeles Angels, 8 p.m. CT (tape delayed). Sunday, Feb. 26, vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, 2:05 p..m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, vs. Kansas City Royals, 2:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, vs. Cincinnati Reds, 2:05 p.m. Friday, March 3, at Los Angeles Angels, 2:10 p.m. Saturday, March 4, vs. Texas Rangers, 2:05 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Arizona Diamondbacks, 2:10 p.m. Saturday, March 11, vs. San Diego Padres, 2:05 p.m. Thursday, March 16, vs. Arizona Diamondbacks, 3:05 p.m. Friday, March 17, vs. Kansas City Royals, 3:05 p.m. Saturday, March 18, vs. Chicago Cubs, 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, vs. Cleveland Indians, 3:05 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, vs. Los Angeles Angels, 2:05 p.m.
  4. yeah but can he get on base consistently?
  5. What evidence have you that Gabe Kapler used PED's? Honest question. None. Much was made of Braun working out with Kapler in the offseason before his MVP year & 2012. Not even saying guilt by association. Just saying that now that Braun isn't training with A-Rod & Kapler anymore he won't be in the "best shape of his life"
  6. Hate to see a young player (any player, really) getting hurt That said the PECOTA projection of 76 wins for the Cardinals looks a little more credible today
  7. Braun can't be in the "best shape of his life" because he's not training with A-Rod & Gabe Kapler anymore
  8. Teams on the way back up with young talent are the toughest to predict. Every prediction formula I've seen has Trea Turner regressing a lot. .290 to .300 with 15 HR's and 40 SB's. The guy hit .342 with 13 HR's 33 SB's last year in 77 games, and he's gonna bat lead-off playing for a manager (Dusty Baker) who loves to run. At the very least I think the SB predictions are way low. Very tough to predict though. And a lot of the young Brewers are like that. You could predict that Arcia is gonna hit .275 with 20 HR's or hit .225 with 9 HR's .... either would have a credible argument, to me
  9. Not sure which I like more, that Pecota has the Brewers improving to 76 wins, or that the Cardinals will be tied with us at 76 wins!
  10. I tend to look for "who is the next Wade Davis?" and I think Chris Archer just might be the guy. Now, Archer obviously has had more success as a starter than Davis ever did, but he got pounded last year, giving up 30 HR's and had a ERA+ of just 101. Hitters are increasingly killing his fastball, which has lost a couple of ticks. He may bounce back, but I'm predicting that he is done as a frontline starter. His slider & changeup, however, are completely nasty and downright unhittable when he's on. As a closer he could be dominant. If the Rays give up on him after '17 or '18, he could be exactly the type of player the Brewers could trade for without giving up the farm for him. With a club option he'd be under team control through 2021
  11. That is true and all, but there is also dumpster fire value in a guy who strikes out 200+ times, has months where he hits <.200, and only gets 120 hits a year despite having a lot of ABs. Sure he goes through little bursts where he hits a streak of dingers, but when he isn't he is the worst thing to have on a team. I'm not sure about that. What you are saying makes sense, and you may be right, but I'm not 100% sure. It depends on how he's being pitched. Are they pitching around him? Are the hitters in front of him seeing better pitches? Lots of things to factor in. Carter is a little more extreme, I recognize that. But Khris Davis, for instance, had 42 bombs and was worth 2.8 WAR, despite the .307 OBP and 166 K's, my gut instincts tell me he's undervalued. Considering that Billy Beane traded for him, it would seem that Beane thinks he was undervalued too
  12. I think you are 100% correct. I believe the game has shifted a little too far in the Sabermetric/WAR direction, and will adjust back with the realization that one or two 3TO players in a lineup have value. I think it depends on the team, the rest of the roster and the type of park you are pitching in in terms of how much you can leverage a great HR hitter, but as you correctly state: Carter is in scoring position every time he steps in the batter's box. There is real value in that! . I'd prefer to see the Brewers in an extreme pitcher's park in order to have a better chance of reducing opponent's runs, but it is too late for that. In an extreme pitcher's park, a great HR hitter has even more value, ala Willie Mays & Willie McCovey in Candlestick Park in the 60's....
  13. The way the nature of Baseball is going, I don't see the Brewers locking up anyone longterm, and I think that is wise.. If Arcia hit like 2011 Braun I wouldn't lock him up much beyond his age 30 or 31 season. Seriously
  14. Braun was under paid when he was an MVP and in the years preceeding that season. We knew his contract was balanced to get paid more in his mid 30's. It evens out.
  15. There are so many promotions I couldn't read through it all! Reads like a minor league team list of promotions, honestly.
  16. Good to see a strong punishment. This really hurts the Cardinals draft in 2017
  17. The Cardinals should lose a 1st Round Draft pick. I'm serious. Whether it was a rogue employee or not, it was under their watch. A harsh punishment such as losing a draft pick sends the message that such a thing will not be tolerated.
  18. I think you take a Ben Sheets type pitcher, and instead of him starting once every 5 games, he's pitching 2 or 3 innings once every 3 games. If you have Games on Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed, he is pitching in both the Sun & Wed games instead of pitching on Sunday and not being available again until Friday.
  19. Don't hold us suspense! Does the Crew win the World Series in 2020 or not?!?! Manny Machado! I love it
  20. I look at the way Andrew Miller was used in the 2016 postseason as ideal http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=millean01&t=p&post=1 Aroldis Chapman, however, was overused because he didn't have enough rest in between pitching http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=chapmar01&t=p&post=1 The Indians got 27 IP out of Miller in 10 game appearances in the postseason, the Yankees got 20 IP out of Chapman in 13 game appearances
  21. $$$$$$$$$ . Money money money. Always money. His opt out is actually after 2018. I'm not saying he for sure will or won't opt out, because we have to see what happens the next 2 years first, but if he has 2 more Cy Young caliber seasons, and his market after 2018 is another 7 years for say $35-$40M per season, with yet another opt out possibly, he'd be crazy to settle for the 2 years/$65M left on his deal instead. He'd be risking millions, maybe hundreds of millions if he were to suddenly decline or get hurt in 2019 or 2020. After 2018 Kershaw will join Bryce Harper & Manny Machado in New York as newly signed Yankees. Just a prediction.
  22. I'll tell you what, it sure works in Strat-O-Matic. However, despite being a complete Baseball nerd, I recognize that and $5 will buy you a cup of coffee somewhere. But put it this way, at this point in their careers, are Jimmy Nelson & Wily Peralta more likely to turn into Max Scherzer or Wade Davis? Wade Davis age 25 4.45 ERA, 85 ERA+, 1.375 WHIP, 29 starts, 184 IP Jimmy Nelson age 26 4.11 ERA, 96 ERA+, 1.286 WHIP, 30 starts, 177 IP Wily Peralta, age 25 3.53 ERA, 107 ERA+, 1.304 WHIP, 32 starts, 198 IP Wily Peralta, age 26 4.72 ERA, 84 ERA+, 1.537 WHIP, 20 starts, 108 IP Now I recognize not every "failed starter" is going to produce like Wade Davis, there is more to it than that, alot more. But man oh man, with the kind of stuff Peralta has, you let him air it out for 2 or 3 innings and that is it, he could really be effective.....
  23. One of the reasons that Scooter is a favorite player of mine is that he seems like the type who has maximized his talent and worked to get everything out of the innate talent he has.... I have no doubt he can play a corner Outfield spot, just not sure he can hit well enough to justify playing him there a lot. He'll need to improve his arm to play much Shortstop Him being versatile will help with depth, double switches and lineup adjustment
  24. The Dodgers thus far seem to be a team that is reluctant to trade prospects. They seem content to continuously contend without overspending to "go for it" in any particular year. Thus no World Series championships in Kershaw's career but 5 postseason appearances in his 9 seasons. Kershaw is one of the greatest pitchers who ever lived, I think the Dodgers are foolish to not put all their chips on the table and go for it....
  25. That would certainly be a concern. How many pitchers does an NL team usually carry? 12? That would allow for 2 long relievers
