  1. I would be all over that strategy as an armchair GM, but in reality the Brewers seem one of the least likely teams to do it. We've already missed out on a first-rounder in a couple of the last few years, and it would be a big ask for us to pass again this year (because you lose the bonus pool money too, so you can't even make up for it in the second round). I think we need to bring in somebody good, which isn't to say I'm enamored with a conservative/low-ceiling pick.
  2. Or it could be Daz Cameron. Rumor has it that he could slip to the Astros at 37. But maybe even the Astros will pass on him at 37. He repeatedly wants $5M though, I don't think we could afford him. I was thinking more along the lines of two $2M guys at 15 and 40.
  3. I don't see why the Brewers would pick an under slot guy like Ponce or Watson at 15 unless they have a fairly firm deal in place to use the difference to sign a first-round talent who is slipping at 40. Maybe they have an arrangement in place with one of the injured pitchers?
  4. brewmann, what's the source of the under-slot pitcher rumor?
  5. Final mock drafts are coming out, and the Funkhouser speculation is still going strong.
  6. As a signability pick could also see them reaching for 1B Josh Naylor. Canadian with good raw power and iffy defense? That's a tailor-made Brewers pick regardless of who the scouting director is.
  7. Going into Draft Day morning, I would still love for a surprise Aiken pick, but among more-likely candidates it seems like Whitley or Allard would offer the most excitement (if either is even still around at #15).
  8. It just seems like on one side of the scale you have kids and other people (who for all we know could not possibly have reacted in time) being seriously injured, and on the other side of the scale we have... people mad because they have to watch through a thin screen that barely affects their view of the field whatsoever? It's not like anybody is calling to ban baseball here or anything.
  9. I agree that life-threatening injuries tend to be freak accidents, but (1) they do happen; and (2) more minor injuries are much more prevalent. Here is a recent article on the issue: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-09-09/baseball-caught-looking-as-fouls-injure-1750-fans-a-year (including an 8-year-old who was hospitalized by a Carlos Gomez foul ball last season)
  10. CF Gomez and M Counsell for 3B Sano and M Molitor
  11. I feel this way too depending on the seats, which is part of the reason I would more than welcome netting, so I could sit in those seats and just enjoy the game. They have extended netting in Japan, it is not an issue. The visibility is virtually the same. You would still feel close to the field, it's not like they would be putting up hockey glass or anything.
  12. I don't see why anyone would be opposed, the netting barely obstructs your view (indeed, the most expensive seats in any park are behind netting). I also think injuries from line drives are a lot more common than people realize. Obviously they are rarely life threatening or involve a broken bat, so we don't hear about them.
  13. Could be an interesting target for our second pick. I know this shouldn't affect our first pick, but it's looking pretty likely that we'll have one of the top picks in the 2016 draft - which I believe is projected to be pitching-rich - so it might make sense to look for some hitters in the first few rounds this year.
  14. Shortstops with upside have as much value of any class of players in baseball. If they won't give up Matz then hang up the phone. (And I'm not even a huge fan of Segura, I just think he's realistically worth a premium pitching prospect, easily)
  15. I would be all over Segura for Matz. Would much rather have Matz than Syndergaard.
  16. Looking at the five Baseball America mock drafts, we were at various times predicted to take: Aaron Nola (first mock), Tyler Beede (second and third mocks), Max Pentecost (fourth mock), and Sean Newcomb (fifth mock), and were linked in the blurb to Brandon Finnegan, Erick Fedde, Jeff Hoffman, Grant Holmes, and Michael Kopech. (bolded players were gone by our pick) They also said that the Brewers were linked to college players and wouldn't want to take a risk on a high school pitcher:
  17. That would be good. I want Aiken, but given the somewhat long odds the Brewers take him, Whittley or Allard seem like the most ideal probable-picks.

  19. Between now and the start of the draft on Monday evening (June 8), post your predictions for picks 1-15 culminating in the Brewers first round selection. In addition or alternatively, just post: (1) who you think the Brewers will pick at #15; (2) who you are hoping the Brewers will pick (given realistic odds of who will still be on the board). 20. This seems like a good year to gamble on an injury risk, because it's a shallow draft and so at #15 we wouldn't be passing on a bunch of players it's hard to pass on. Plus, I would much rather gamble on talent-with-an-injury-risk than a guy with better medicals but lower odds of turning into something great. As an extreme simplification, I would rather have a guy with a 30% chance of staying healthy and a 100% chance of being a frontline pitcher, as opposed to a guy with a 100% chance of staying healthy and a 30% chance of being a frontline pitcher, even though in one sense the expected value is the same. With the guys you listed gone, my draft board would be: 1) Aiken 2) Matuella 3) Allard 4) Happ (I should add that this in contingent on the injured guys agreeing to reasonable and maybe even under-slot signing bonuses - no go if Aiken wants top-5/top-10 money)
  21. Doesn't change my previous post. Speed readings in this situation are not as reliable as to say, for example, that an MLB player is sitting in the upper 80s. Not to mention the fact that it ignores all the other variables that go into how hard a pitcher who is working on things is throwing. The implication that it is a demerit for Medeiros is totally unfounded.
  22. Medeiros is having a fantastic season, I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't think we can verify how hard he is throwing either way, there simply is not enough data on that for guys in the low minors. Simply stated, a 3.9 BB/9 for an inexperienced 19-year-old lefty with the kind of strikeout stuff Medeiros has is not indicative of the debilitating control issues you are projecting, TheCrew07.
  23. Lind is an upgrade for Matt Adams, but they can keep Adams for cheap next season, and since St. Louis has no DH and neither Adams nor Lind should play anywhere but 1B, it makes it hard for them to pick up his option next season. I think a team that could use Lind in 2015 and 2016 might be willing to give up more.
  24. I was a Manny Parra holdout for a long time on the grounds that he was just getting unlucky and he was going to breakout into at least a mid-rotation starter. (On the flip side, I'm proud to have been one of the few -- yes, few! -- vocal Carlos Gomez supporters during his mediocre years )
  25. Another good name for the Brewers (or maybe the Cubs), once you've had a few too many Pints
