  1. Are there concerns about Chris Betts being able to stick at catcher that you have him listed as C/1B? I guess the upside is worth the risk either way, just wary of drafting a potential 1B prospect in the first round who isn't a total hitting prodigy like Prince was.
  2. That would be a decent trade, but if we assume Segura's bat is back I would try to push for Hunter Renfroe instead of Rymer Liriano (the latter makes me nervous because of the strikeouts). That's a bigger give for the Padres, but they're in a position to overpay.
  3. Some optimism from (in my opinion) the best hitting and pitching prospects in the system (not counting Lara): Orlando Arcia, Biloxi (AA), 52 PA, .455/.510/.568/1.078 Kodi Medeiros, Wisconsin (A), 15.1 IP, 2.93 ERA, 0.783 WHIP, 11.7 K/9, 2.9 BB/9 (*Edit* See above, much better post by tmwiese )
  4. Melvin's not going to trade Garza for nothing more than a solid utility piece. I would ask for something like 3B Rafael Devers and 2B Wendell Rijo, two upside guys in the low minors. If Garza is traded it's with the acknowledgement that we're not going to be competitive for another 2-3 seasons.
  5. Absolutely could not care less about the PEDs and him "lying" and wish people would stop endlessly droning on about it, but yes those type of mega-contracts (even a relatively reasonable mega-contract like Braun's) usually do not work out unless the player ends up being HoF caliber. Braun had HoF caliber talent for the start of his career, but through injuries and other issues it seems unlikely he will produce like that going forward, so it's going to be a bad contract. I don't think it was a dumb contract at the time like, say, signing Prince Fielder for >$200M.
  6. I don't agree with this sentiment. What makes Uecker the greatest is he loves sitting in the booth calling the game when the Brewers are the worst team in baseball just as much as when they are winning. (In fact that's arguably when he's at his most entertaining.) I doubt he's all that bothered that the Brewers are not going to win a World Series anytime soon. It's not all about winning.
  7. It's a silly grievance that's impossible to prove. Any prospect could use more seasoning (for example, the fact that Kris Bryant is a horrendous defender). It's also incredibly insulting to the other MLBPA members on the Cubs roster like Mike Olt. Bryant is a chump. Hope he fails this season and for the rest of his career.
  8. Hedges had a .589 OPS in AA last season, Melvin would be wise not to get intoxicated by the BA ranking.
  9. I'm celebrating at losses at this point in the hope that it shakes Mark A into selling. SELL SELL SELL. ABANDON ALL HOPE.
  10. Good video, though he doesn't really explain why there has been a decrease since his mid-1980s hypothetical. Evidently the games have gotten marginally slower, but I doubt that has much impact at all. In terms of black players, there are a lot of issues. One of which is that NCAA nonsensically caps baseball scholarships (versus basketball or football - football teams get like 70 scholarships for some absurd reason), which makes it much harder for lower-income players to go to college and/or focus on baseball.
  11. The Padres are off to a hot start but have been relatively dismal at SS/2B, as expected. What about: SS Luis Sardinas 2B Scooter Gennett for C Austin Hedges SP Casey Kelly SP Zechariah Lemond Allows the Brewers to consider trading Lucroy later this season, and long-term opens up 2B for Segura (who is having a nice rebound so far) and SS for Arcia.
  12. Can't blame that one on the front office. They gave him a massive offer, but he didn't want to play here. He would have been even less likely to want to play here if we had been in a full rebuild.
  13. Blame the guy who had one bad night (Fiers) rather than the guy(s) who assembled/managed the roster that has gone 2-12. Good one, Mark!
  14. Denard Span is actually a pretty good player, so while Gomez is an upgrade I'm not sure if there's enough of an incentive for the Nats to trade Giolito. Lucroy would seemingly be much more attractive to them, and it would be down to how other teams view Lucroy (an interesting question given his superb advanced metrics) as to whether he is worthy of a Giolito-level prospect. I would trade Lucroy for Giolito though, definitely.
  15. Given injuries, this is pretty much our best possible lineup, isn't it? Except for A-Ram. Good lord...
  16. http://38.media.tumblr.com/7b31dd273547dd994315d4fb7675765a/tumblr_mglfqla8RA1qzwh1uo1_500.gif
  17. Robin Yount. Why not? Plus the MIL-MIN series would be fun.
  18. Once the losing streak continues and fans start to get bored, I'm hoping they decide to really mix things up and make Carlos Gomez player-manager.
  19. I'm loving it. Can watch Brewers baseball with zero stress. Here's hoping we coast to the #1 pick next year with a nice long summer of Uecker on the radio, amusingly-bad baseball, and period check-ins on the next wave of prospects in the low minors. Hopefully a healthy dash of trade speculation as well, once the fire sale begins.
  20. I want to see him flop just so everyone can stop accusing the Cubs of committing the crime of the century by not having him on the opening day roster. To be fair though, the guy OPS'd over 1.000 at every level. Him flopping would be quite the shocker. I don't expect him to wash out of the league, but people are acting like he is a lock to be Mike Trout 2.0, so I just want him to be mediocre (like so many uber-prospects before - Matt Wieters comes to mind though there are surely better examples)
  21. I cannot wait for Kris Bryant to flop in his rookie season. The press coverage is unbearable, with the lead headline on MLB.com being about his amazing defensive performance in turning a double play.
  22. I haven't been able to watch either one of his starts. Is it really a possible breakthrough pitch? Trying to temper my excitement, but it's hard.
