  1. Perhaps that's your subconscious fighting a craving for Earl Grey tea.
  2. Dominic Smith just called the Mets an incredible team.
  3. Ya, I'm still pretty shocked that the Cubs passed on Jonathan Gray. Who are they expecting to pitch for them?
  4. MLB.com not really loading for me, and I have 57 Mbps speed from FIOS. Their website is getting slammed right now.
  5. Very low. Only one future Hall of Famer I see picked at either of these two draft slots since the modern draft began in 1989: 17th picks with 10 + WAR Cal Eldred 1989 16.2 WAR Jeromy Burnitz 19.6 WAR Cole Hammels 2002 30.3 WAR Roy Halladay 1995 64.6 WAR 28th picks with 10 + WAR Charles Johnson 1992 20.5 WAR
  6. Cleveland goes Ginger power! Turn down the brightness on your tv screens. Remember, Vegas, you have both high school and collegiate players in the draft, so it's not quite cut and dry as far as who has the bigger bust rate. I'd suspect pitchers, because of health and development issues that can creep up during their minor league careers. Offensive players have more ways to get to the Majors (speed, hitting, defense). If a pitcher can't pitch, they won't get to the big show. Looking at the current Baseball America, which broke this very thing down in detail. It breaks down positions by high school and college, and then gives a percentage of which players drafted went on to have an impact in the Majors (WAR 10 or higher, from 1989 through 2008): Catchers: high school 9 of 81 (11%) college 8 of 65 (12%) Shortstops: high school 11 of 132 (8%) college 9 of 73 (12%) Third basemen: high school 6 of 61 (10%) college 10 of 47 (21%) Second base: high school 0 college 3 of 22 (14%) Outfield: high school 23 of 194 (12%) college 20 of 153 (13%) First base: high school 5 of 38 (13%) college 8 of 44 (18%) I'd expect that in the next issue, when they break down pitchers, they'll have lower impact rates. It's hard to draft and develop successful starting pitchers. Just ask Doug Melvin.
  7. Stewart. Interesting. Cleveland is up, then we get to see which future ex-Marlin Miami selects.
  8. Come to think of it, Willingham will be gone by the time those guys get up. I thought he was 32. He's 34
  9. Twins are next up. Frazier would be a great pick for the Twins. He's got the power to hit it out of Target Field, no problem. He, Sano and Arcia and Willingham (if he's still there and healthy) could really mash.
  10. Rockies take Gray. They're putting together a nice young talent base.
  11. The Cubs have power in their system. Baez, Soler, Vogelbach. They have almost no pitching. Vizcaino has serious health issues.
  12. Bryant goes to the Cubs. Apparently they're going to pure offense, no pitching route.
  13. Wow, Appel #1. Chicago just got Jonathan Gray if they want him. That just sucks for us.
  14. Hard to say, a lot would depend on who fell to them. When it comes to 17, and I see who's available, I'm sure I'll be grumbling. Ian Clarkin would have probably been one of my choices. Left hander, fastball hits 94/95. Nice K:BB ratio (I'm a little tired of Brewer prospects walking everybody), and per BBA, he's got one of the best breaking balls in the entire class. Hey Bud, taking some time off of your Ryan Braun witch hunt tonight?
  15. Any ideas on who the Brewers might be hoping for with the 54th pick? Also, I wonder if the Cubs take Mark Appel out of Stanford?
  16. Do we see Ginger power go #1? Or one of the pitchers? Baseball America picks Jonathan Gray of Oklahoma to go first to Houston. I think that's a good solid pick, as Houston has the bats in their system now. They need some starting pitching.
  17. Thanks, theCrew. I just wanted to make sure that people knew the draft was starting tonight.
  18. http://mlb.mlb.com/assets/images/9/1/6/49755916/cuts/draft_room640_90k4cce8_fhkuukrh.jpg The podium, photo courtesy of MLB.com The 2013 MLB amateur player's draft starts in about 45 minutes (7pm ET). The Brewers, of course, do not have a pick in the first round. We forfeited the 17th pick when we signed Kyle Lohse (the Cardinals will pick up the 28th pick as compensation). But we will have multiple picks this evening, as the first three rounds will be completed tonight. The draft order Milwaukee will pick 54th, 72nd (competitive balance round B), and 90th. Who's available? Here's a list of the top 100 prospects available tonight per Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com Top 100 Do the Brewers go with a pitching prospect in the first round, or do we follow what we did in 2012, taking hitters with our first three selections?
  19. Wow, that whole 24 hours Braun got to rest his thumb should sure pay dividends!
  20. Well, I do care. He's been my favorite player pretty much since he came up to the Majors, and it sucks thinking that he might have taken something he shouldn't have. The thing that kills me is that he really doesn't need some drug to be a great baseball player. You could give me every drug in the book, and I'd never be able to hit a baseball the way he does. Not in a million years. I try to convince myself that he took something to heal faster, and while he shouldn't have done it, I at least can understand it. I know it's easy to say "well, you shouldn't look up to athletes". Sure. Imagine going to some guy that grew up idolizing Mickey Mantle, and telling him "oh by the way, he did such and such". I don't idolize Braun, but I've cheered for him since the day he was drafted. I've built a nice personal collection of Braun baseball cards. And now I feel like crap because of what's happening. I do know one thing for sure, though. Until something is proven against him, I'm going to reserve my judgement.
  21. Yet somehow we know that MLB is going to suspend players before they've even begun that process. Funny how there's a complete lack of confidentiality once again. I guess ESPN just got lucky digging through Bud's garbage, huh?
  22. Very well written, indeed. The more I read about this, the more I don't see a chance in hell that Braun is suspended. Unless MLB has another positive test result from Braun that we don't know about, they have no physical evidence whatsoever, and they're relying completely on hearsay. The "records" that we've all seen provided show Braun with a dollar amount next to his name, and Bosch has already stated publicly that he's not had any contact with Braun whatsoever, supporting the assertions of Braun's legal defense team. This whole thing is a house-of-cards waiting to fall down. And it will. And MLB will look incredibly bad once again. They didn't like it when Braun "got off". How ticked off will they be when 20 guys "get off".
  23. That was completely uncalled for. So, if we're not ready to bury a player on our team based on conjecture and half-truths, we're capable of cheering on a murderer, too? You stated earlier that you hadn't seen any of the real facts from the first appeal and overturn. Neither have I. I cannot verify the veracity of the information that has been floated out there. I haven't seen the written summary by Das, nor can I vet the scientific evidence provided by Braun's defense team. Barring that ,I'm not going to convict the guy. I'm sorry. It seems you've already done so, yet I will not. It doesn't make me a homer, it makes me a man with a brain, and that brain is telling me that something doesn't smell right. This goes far beyond wanting to clean up the game; it looks like the Salem Witch trials all over again. MLB, ESPN, Yahoo Sports and a few other national media outlets are acting in concert, and they have created enough froth where half the people in this country want to see Braun "hanged", so to speak, absent of any real facts being made available. MLB's "star witness" has zero credibility whatsoever. Whatever happened to the confidentiality of this whole system? It's supposed to work in a very specific way, and now once again we're hearing that suspensions are imminent. We're only supposed to hear about this if a player (or players) have been suspended, and their appeals were denied.
  24. Question now is, can our bullpen hold once again? They've got to be just exhausted after this last month. If I heard correctly, they pitched something like 100 innings last month.
