  1. If the Brewers are out of contention next year around the Aug mark, and Fiers is pitching like a stud like he has been this year so far, then I'm all about limiting him next year too and protecting the future. If he pulls a Cal Eldread then I really don't care though.
  2. I think he was trolling. I feel dumb for the long winded reply, or more/less for even responding. Sorry for feeding the bears.
  3. so Tulo and Hamilton (first two guys that came to mind pertaining to debate at hand) not good either?
  4. What is the argument here? Ben Sheets is a good pitcher. He's an ace. He is also injury prone.
  5. I just now saw this post and saw the that the poster made the post towards me. twice 2012: $ 98,150,833 2011: $ 83,590,833 2010: $ 90,408,000 2009: $ 80,182,502 2008: $ 80,937,499 2007: $ 70,986,500 2006: $ 57,568,333 2005: $ 39,934,833 2004: $ 27,528,500 2003: $ 40,627,000 2002: $ 50,287,833 2001: $ 43,886,883 2000: $ 35,800,000 Link? So when Melvin came out and said that this years $98M payroll was significantly over budget, he was just making stuff up to look good? They're not a $110-$115M payroll team. Not now at least, and I don't see them turning that corner in the next couple of years either. I just do not understand where you are getting this idea from. Forbes said Mark is making that much of a profit and he could spend more? I highly doubt it. They hit $90M in 2010 and almost $100M this year, but again, from everything Melvin has said, it seems as if the Brewers are scaling back next year, not tacking on. I think most of us have said we think the Brewers payroll will be between $80-$90M. I know that's what I said and I've seen a few others say the same. We're basing those numbers off of what Melvin has said, previous budgets, and predicting future attendance (revenue). How do you know we're making more money from ticket sales, merchandizing, TV, radio, etc? How do you know the Brewers have made/will make enough to afford a $110-$115M payroll? Clearly you know something that most of the other people who have posted in this thread don't know. When did they mention they were buyers? I don't remember hearing that at all. If they really had all that extra $$$ to buy like you claim, wouldn't they have bought early when guys like A-Gonz, Gamel, Narvdawg went down with season ending injuries vs just bringing up journeyman minor leaguers and young guys from the farm? Back then the Brewers were hardly out of it. how much? It's still a business and Mark is a proven successful businessman. He's not going to let one of his businesses lose $20M just to tack on payroll. Stop insinuating that.
  6. I'd bet the farm the 2013 payroll doesn't even come within $5M of $95M.
  7. I agree that Rogers and Peralta should be given a shot before Thornburg. Let Thornburg sit in AAA and if Rogers or Peralta implode, he can replace them. He's young and can benefit a lot by waiting where as Peralta and Rogers have to poo or get off the pot.
  8. Why do any of you feel that Peralta or Thornburg or Rogers will be better than Narveson next year? I don't get the complete write off of him. Whatever you do, don't elude to the Brewers not contending next year.
  9. Good deal. Limit him next year too. We'll unleash him in 2014 during the title run.
  10. I think he will spend the remaining $20M or so on a SP and the bullpen. I don't want him to buy another SP but you know him and doug will. Id rather roll that money into 2014 and find out what the kids got. edit: I'm down with that, only because I think Melvin will sign a FA arm no matter what.
  11. Of course. I was just going with the assumption that Melvin goes with the young arms vs. signing FA's like Kuroda and EJax.
  12. In 2010 the Brewers had a very dangerous lineup. Their rotation and bullpen, not so much. 2013 could wind up a lot like 2010. You can assume the 2013 rotation will be better, but you don't know it will be better than Gallardo/Wolf/Narveson/Bush/Capuano/Parra/Suppan (I think Davis was in that mix too). I'd say the young arms that will be in the 2013 rotation have far more upside than the 2010 rotation did, but they're still unknown. Gallardo and Fiers are really the only knowns.
  13. I'd be fine with doing that, or even putting Burgos into the mix as an 8th option. I know Doug will buy a SP FA because it's his and Mark's MO to spend what they can to compete the most, but I'd rather roll that $$$ that would go towards a FA SP next year into the 2014 budget and really kick some tail.
  14. I wish he'd just roll over that extra 2013 money into 2014 when we know better of what we have but I agree it's his MO to spend what they can and compete now vs. bettering the team for the future.
  15. Honestly, I don't want to sign any FA SP's for next year. I want to see what Gallardo/Fiers/Estrada/Thornburg/Peralta/Rogers/Narveson can do. Best 5 of the 7 make the opening day rotation out of spring with one of the other 2 being the long reliever and the other guy going back down to Nashville. After seeing what those guys do next year, then pay for a quality SP for the 2014 season. Maybe a couple of them if need be. I think paying for a SP next year would be a waste.
  16. I agree with it. I agree with what you think they'll add as well. I'm hoping the SS/utility guy is Bianchi or someone min wage. I think next year's payroll will be around the $80M mark just because there's no reason to inflate it going off your list as far as what we need. As I've said before (and Melvin hinted at in his interview), next year is a year where the Brewers see what they have in the young guys (Thornburg/Peralta/Rogers/segura/Henderson). After seeing what we have out of those guys next year, I think the 2014 payroll will be inflated because Doug will spend the $$$ on quality options to fill whatever holes the team has.
  17. I was going to say give him regular AB's rest of the year and see what happens. No reason not too. If he keeps it up, staple him in the forecast for next year. If the Brewers contend, great, if not, and he's got numbers before the trade deadline next year, maybe the Brewers could get some sort of return for him. I don't think they could get a return for him now. Maybe in the offseason if he keeps it up, but come the deadline next year, maybe him and Hart could draw some interest and a decent return. I wouldn't want to sign Gomez to a multi-year deal though, and not just because of the Boras factor (that's decent reason though). He's still an overall knucklehead to me. That HR he hit yesterday barely went over the wall, and Gomez started jogging and caddilacing before the ball even left the park. Usually he's doing his full blown sprint, but yesterday he didn't and that was one instance where he actually should have been. In my mind he still does things like that that bother me on the base paths. He's touted as an unbelievable fielder no matter what, but I've seen him botch his fair share of fly balls too on bad judgement. Let someone else overpay for him, get the most you can out of him and maybe move him for a piece for the future if you can.
  18. How many interleague games are there next year vs this year?
  19. Yeah, RRR and Melvin cannot stop talking about how great Hart is at 1B. Between the two of them, anytime Hart's name is brought up the first thing they say is how "unbelievable" he's been at 1B.
  20. I think he was saying that in a way in his interview yesterday when he said they have to find out what they have in their young arms come next year.
  21. I think this sums it up well. Why can't Gamel play 3B? He did for awhile in Nashville, did he not? Was he terrible? I honestly don't understand why I've seen so many people say Gamel can't play 3B or RF (move Aoki to CF if Gamel is in RF). I thought Gamel played some OF in Nashville too? I maybe wrong on that though. I think Gamel could be valuable due to the fact that he's played different positions, no? Again, if Gamel stinks, he becomes a bench bat and the road is paved for Morris. It just seems to make too much sense to trade Hart.
  22. Gamel hasn't had a legit chance to sink or swim in the majors yet. Give him that chance next year. It's what you have to do if you're a smaller market team. Trade Hart, run with Aoki and Gamel at RF and 1B next year. If Gamel sinks, here comes Morris. The Pence comparison is good, but I think Jason Werth (pre 2011) is a better comparison to Hart. Corey Hart is comparable to Jason Werth in the year by year stat dept pre 2011, and look at what Werth signed for when he became a FA. I doubt anyone gives Hart as much as the nats overpaid for Werth, but is it unbelievable to assume that Hart could garnish something like 16-18M a year for 5-7 years? Would you want the Brewers to do that, vs. taking a shot at Gamel for far, far less and having that extra money to fill other holes? Werth was terrible in 2011 and has been hurt most of 2012, but pre 2011 his year by year stats line up with Harts fairly close. Their career stats are really close.
  23. I think he meant what sort of $$$ Hart will warrant going forward in comparison to what Gamel will make going forward. I maybe wrong though.
  24. That's what I think will happen going off of Melvin's interview today. Use 2013 to see what you got and setup 2014.
