  1. I like pitchers who pitch inside. It's part of the game. Can't have hitters lunging on the outside half of the plate without some level of fear.
  2. Before the day started, Burnes was listed on top players on Day 2. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2016-mlb-draft-best-available-players-remaining-on-day-2/

  4. You're stuck on top 5. That's arbitrary. If the Brewers passed on someone, by definition he's going lower than 5. You have a preconceived argument you're trying to espouse when the facts just aren't with you. I'm fine with agreeing to disagree. This will all be decided. We will see how pitchers taken after 5 like Manning, Puk, Garrett, and Groome are ranked as prospects over time compared to Ray. We will see if any of them could be traded for in the future or if the same posters who didn't want to draft them will in turn laugh at the idea of trading for them in a couple of years (even for Ray). We will see how their careers turn out compared to Ray's career. We will see how it all turns out. And this thread will sit here waiting to be reopened.
  5. One issue with pitchers, is that the majority of the top pitchers were taken high in the draft. In many cases, most teams don't even get a whiff at the chance to draft them. If you look at where David Price, Justin Verlander, Madison Bumgarner, Clayton Kershaw, Zach Grienke and company were drafted, it's high in the draft. Price and Verlander were at the top. There are always exceptions to the rule. Statistically, pointing to an outlier like Arrieta and saying that can happen is not a statistically valid analysis. In that case, you'd have to look at what an exceptional case he is statistically from all the other pitchers who are aces. Arrieta does not change the fact that, it is imperative to seize your chance to get a front line pitcher high in the draft because the Arrieta opportunity is so rare. Melvin did a great job getting Diplan as a teen for Gallardo. Diplan was the top int'l draft prospect his year. Melvin did well with some trades where we got much more for players than many thought we could. Trading for lottery ticket arms is definitely a viable option. But seizing on front line pitching high in the draft when it comes your way is important.
  6. Love the Reds' and Cardinals' drafts. The Reds may have added 3 to their top 10 prospects. You can't beat that. The Cardinals probably added two. Hudson reminds me of the way they nabbed Lance Lynn (I believe from the same school). Perez is polarizing and in bad taste but he's potentially a high ceiling guy considering he was discussed at the top of the draft prior to his failed test. Furthermore, the Cards have drafted Miller, Lynn, Wacha et al high in the draft. Now, with that track record, you can see what they are doing and feel good about it if you're a fan of their team. The Cards have a way of restocking their team without totally collapsing.
  7. Random thoughts: 1. In looking at interviews with Ray, he seems like a great kid. You have to be happy about him as a person. He will represent the organization well. He has a great attitude and comes across really well. I heard on the radio that he's friends with Jabari Parker as they went to high school together. 2. I will reserve judgment on the Cal 3b. I do like his athleticism at third. This is an organizational need. 3b is really a position you can create a delta with to the opposition. It can be a difference maker spot because there are only so many 3b that can hit and have the athleticism to play there. This is a position I would like to keep cranking on. Right now, Gatewood needs to get better although he's showing flashes. Lara is an unknown but has immense potential. Need to keep working on 3b who can stick there. 3. Based on what I read, I like the lottery ticket option with Feliciano due to his athleticism and youth. We've had Lucroy, who is a bona fide stud, but we have not done a great job of developing depth in the next line of catchers since him. This is a premium position, and we need to be continually adding good catching prospects. I like Nottingham and now like this pickup. We signed the international catcher last year who shows promise. In fact, I would not be averse to adding yet another catcher. I don't know if he's still available but the young Utah catcher (names escapes me but I believe his first name may be Payton) might be someone to nab soon.
  8. Oh good because that is all I need. Royals didn't have an Ace and did just fine last year. Also you can find Aces down in the lower minors before they get big. Teams do it all the time. Ok last one because I didn't see it. Be realistic. We need a front line pitcher who can win multiple playoff games in a playoff series. No one said its the only way to win. In my opinion, it's the optimal way. Get yourself a Bumgarner type whenever possible which is barely ever. This was a shot.
  9. Ok. I made clear I'm unhappy with the pick. I'm not going to sit here and applaud everything. I was on record before the draft I wanted a pitcher and it didn't happen. We are going to hope that Ponce, Diplan, Hader, and maybe Kirby can become top pitchers. But I will drop off for now because you guys want to celebrate the pick and I will let you have at it.
  10. +1 People are entitled to their opinions. It's pretty basic. You mean like "I don't give a flip about the other posters"? Typo on my part. I meant about other teams. Not posters.
  11. Dang if only we had the best trade chip of the summer or more picks in the top half of the first round in the future. Groome was our only chance to ever get an Ace. Good luck with that. You're getting a number two starter if things go well at best. You think you're getting Giolito? I'd be shocked. That would be a panic move by the Nats. The Dodgers aren't giving up Urias. I'm not talking about the chubby kid from the Rangers. That's not what Groome projects to be. He's much better. Teams that have Groome type pitchers don't trade them away.
  12. He's not hitting 39 homers in the majors. He isn't facing Wake Forest here. His average does not project well. Outfielders like this are a dime a dozen.
  13. +1 People are entitled to their opinions. It's pretty basic.
  14. Go away. Seriously. I am not going away. Add value to a post, and leave your ad hominem posts at home. We will just have to see if Groome becomes a stud pitcher.
  15. Or will the other 10 teams that passed on him? That's a lot of not living down. It doesn't matter. Milwaukee needs front line pitching and has no way to get it. They played it safe. Let's be real. Pretty much worst case scenario in the top 15 picks. Groome is something Milwaukee needed, and I don't give a flip about the other posters. This one won't go away. Milwaukee isn't getting an ace in free agency. They over thought this one by a longshot.
  16. They are celebrating in St Louis and Wrigley. Don't need to worry about the uninspired Brewers who wasted a terrible last year on a punch and judy, slap hitter with a high floor and an uninspired batting average. But hey, he can start his mediocrity early. Don't hope for losses. They will squander the pick. No foresight or comprehension of the Milwaukee market. Medeiros, Arnett, Heckathorn, Kentrail, Bradley, and now a weak hitting leftfielder with a high floor.
  17. If Groome ends up being ace, Montgomery and Stearns will never live it down. Ever.
  18. Sickles' mock draft looks very similar to our consensus from the other thread.
  19. Hill has been a pleasant surprise to me. I could see him being valuable to competing teams. It may be like a Javier Betancourt type of trade, though. Betancourt is ok at best. Weak hitter and is basically a dime a dozen ball player. If he maxes out he could be a utility player, but frankly, I'd put him below Rivera as a future utility guy.
  20. Granted, I'm not personally scouting these guys. So, there's that. But I'm reading and listening to anything I can get my hands on about the draft. And I'd take Collins over Ray without a second thought, and possibly Collns over Perez. When Schwarber was coming into the draft, I was on this site hoping for him. In that case, I was surprised the Cubs took him 4th as there weren't many projections of him way up there. I had actually seen Schwarber play (on TV) and loved his hit tool box. Used the whole field, was strong, smart hitter with average and power. We had threads on here where I remember mentioning Schwarber. I bring this up because the reports I'm hearing is that Collins can hit like that. Even if he's a first baseman, if he can hit like that, it would fill a tremendous need.
  21. I asked a similar question about Perez. From what I've seen, Perez is a middle infielder and not a third baseman. He's a twitchy athlete. There are very significant questions about Perez's ability to ever hit. There is no comparison with Correa other than they are both athletes at short. Correa is a couple of orders of magnitude better. Perez lacks the frame, strength, and hit toolbox that a kid like Correa has.
  22. Oh my, very sad to see this. Thus was the first I saw of it. I absolutely remember Everett, as I'm sure many of you do, in the run up to last year's draft. He had a rocket arm and was throwing upper 90s. RIP and blessings to the family.
