  1. I'd be very curious to hear what outsiders and scouts think of Green...I haven't heard much buzz around him, but he's hit the heck out of the ball in a situation that wouldn't necessarily lead to high expectations (pitcher's league, age 20). I don't know too much about his glove either, except that he seemed to do well at 2b in Helena so presumably has plenty of range for third.
  2. Although I like this move, which I have asked for quite some time, I agree with patrickgpe: why wasn't this done earlier? Bowden is notoriously difficult in trade negotiations. Maybe he was previously asking for Bill Hall but recently got wind of Mel Stocker, Darren Ford, and Lorenzo Cain? Melvin finally loosened up and put Steve Hammond on the block? Hard to say...
  3. LaPorta ends the WVa portion of his regular season with as many HR as singles (10 of each, along with 8 doubles).
  4. Yeah, to me there's a lot of waffling in Ned's moves lately. He will let a starting pitcher bat in the 7th, as though he's committed to the guy, then lift him after he allows one baserunner. He'll bring in McClung, then quickly pull the plug. I feel like the guy is flailing, trying to find the winning combination without really having much of an underlying game plan. It seems clear that the criticism has gotten under Ned's skin...that is natural, I guess, but it's not healthy to have a manager so filled with doubt.
  5. If you are not impressed by the .320 / .435 / .655 in AAA I really don't know what to say.
  6. I don't think I've ever started an in-game thread...maybe something improbable will happen today. Estrada walks and steals second?
  7. Gillespie is a good on-base guy, but with more line-drive power than HR pop so far, and those guys sometimes struggle to establish themselves in corner OF slots where teams prefer sluggers. Watching the current edition of the Brewers, it's pretty clear that they could use some more baserunners, but it remains to be seen whether they'll take steps in that direction. The common comp I hear for Gillespie is Matt Murton of the Cubs, at least as a hitter, and Murton has not quite been accepted as a full time player. (Some of that has to do with defense and baserunning I guess, but I don't know how much better Gillespie is defensively...I think he's faster and more athletic than Murton but I might be wrong about that.) Most of the same comments apply to Brantley as well, but his skills are skewed even more toward OBP and away from SLG.
  8. I am not sure how MLB arrived at the arbitrary 10% reduction in signing bonuses, but that seemed to cause some serious friction in the first round, with a number of guys signing for 2006 slot money instead of the MLB recommendations for 2007. Still, in the end they all signed...even KC got their guy and without spending anything close to what Boras was talking about earlier in the summer. Any word on whether the Brewers signed Cody Scarpetta?
  9. It's gonna be hard to shut this kid down for the year...it's gotta be tempting to ride him like the rookie version of Cal Eldred.
  10. It's only a fun ride if we make the postseason, end of story, period. That may be the way you feel about it, but there are clearly a lot of others who feel differently. Surely you don't presume to speak for all Brewer fans?
  11. Exactly. How can you have a soaring high without a crushing low? It's like, how can you have a happy song without sad songs? To fully appreciate each emotion you have to experience both. There ain't no dark 'til something shines... Me, I'm looking at this year as the beginning of a five year run...the Brewers are good again, and there's reason to believe that they're going to get better. Not only do they have a lot of young players, but the young players are in general better than the older guys. Early indications are that they have developed several major league pitchers from the farm system. Think about that for a moment... They are buyers at the deadline, for heaven's sakes, and there's only one team in the NL with more wins. But, yeah, losing this DH stinks...
  12. Meanwhile, let's hope that a 1-2-3 first (thanks to the DP) and a four-run lead will be just what the doctor ordered for young Mr. Parra's nerves.
  13. A lot of the young Brewers haven't played a 162-game season, and they're hoping to play that plus a couple of extra weeks at the end. And the youngster have seemed tired...Yost has a solid bench and he's wise to use it. He's got to have a long-term plan to keep the starters as well as the reserves fresh into October.
  14. Also, yougotta think Braun is not ready for July to end. Player and rookie of the month?
  15. Has anyone said that it's nice to have Bill Hall back? It's nice to have you back, Bill.
  16. If you're talking about impact major leaguers, Jeffress and LaPorta are the two top candidates. Jeffress of course carries major risk, but he's got upside like nobody else in the system, and he's got some performance behind him, for all that it's in low A ball. There are several other guys who probably have a better odds of at least reaching the majors, but are not likely to ever be a regular. The system might be mid-teens in MLB by now, but I'm not going to complain, becuase they've gotten there the right way, by graduating impact talents.
  17. He's a big feller. The Sarfate comp occurred to me as well...hard thrower but. Also, it looks like McClung did have Tommy John surgery in 2003.
  18. Anyone know if McClung has had Tommy John surgery? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  19. I dunno, I reckon Mench can go five or six octaves. His falsetto is to die for.
  20. Let me suggest a long rain delay in the middle of every game that Vargas starts.
  21. Sample size is a concept that goes against human perception, so it will be something that baseball fans will always struggle with. If a batter looks horrible for a week, how could he possibly be good? If a pitcher we are otherwise unfamiliar with comes up and stinks up the joint, he can't possibly be good. It should also be noted that there is a well-known cognitive bias toward the first things you see...it is that bias that leads to the idea that a first impression is so crucial. (I think that it's called the primacy effect.) I think you see the same with Gwynn in reverse...he started out hot so he must be good. It's very hard to overcome that initial perception. That's part of what makes so many Ken Phelps types get stuck in the 'AAAA player' bin...if they don't look good in their first shot at the bigs, they sometimes don't get another. That's not to say that Balfour is necessarily a great pitcher. But I do buy Danzig's explanation upthread...the guy got so amped up in his debut that he stopped doing whatever he was doing in AAA, and now he's out there thinking 'don't screw up, don't screw up.'
  22. With respect to Turnbow, you have to recognize that major league pitchers are gonna get hit sometimes. With a setup man, that is likely to happen in a high-leverage situation, so it seems like a disaster every time it happens. But Turnbow has succeeded more than he's failed this year, and he's going to continue getting the ball in those high-leverage situations. What they'll do in the ninth next year will be very interesting, though... Yeah, Prince. Nice to add a run here.
  23. He's racked up 509 vs Lefties With an OPS north of 1700...(?!)
  24. No way I'd let Braun face a lefty with a runner on in a tight game as an opposing manager right now.
