  1. How about a little offense to make the bottom of the eighth a little less of a high wire act?
  2. 11th rounder Cody Scarpetta and 23rd rounder Cody Hawn look like tough signs, guys with some upside who could improve their stock in college ball after some injury issues in HS. Most of the HS kids taken in the late rounds are unlikely to sign, at least if past trends hold.
  3. Apparently if you hit a home run and there's a runner already on base, the baserunner also scores. So some home runs are worth two, or three, or even four runs. Who knew?!
  4. It's not good to hope for something that has a small chance of happening. You set yourself up for bad feelings. That neatly summarizes my sophomore year of college, actually.
  5. Capellan coming in now is like in the old days when they bled a patient who was already sick.
  6. It's still close, at least, but one wonders how long that will be the case. Capellan soon?
  7. There you go, Estrada...show these guys how to work the count and take a walk. Um, wha?
  8. Apparently we are seeing the effect of the ancient feud between the Capuanos and Rapuanos in their ancestral homeland...
  9. It hadn't dawned on me until I saw this lineup how wierd that Texas team is. Teixera and Young, yeah, but the rest of that lineup, yowza. They gotta rue the day they ran Melvin out of town....
  10. What's not to get, brett? Sure, Hall is .255 / .314 / .412 and Estrada is .263 / .283 / .430, which means that they have nearly identical OPS. Sure, Hall's is slightly better and more valuable with the higher OBP at that. But Hall lacks that certain je ne sais quoi. He ain't got that do re mi. You know what I mean? Besides, a catcher needs to be at the center of the batting order...at #5 Estrada can feel secure that the whole order revolves around him.
  11. Putting Hall at DH means that if they need him as an emergency infielder, they lose the DH for the game. I'm not sure that's a big consideration, but knowing how Ned seems to worry about contingencies I wouldn't be surprised if that's entered his mind.
  12. Well, they're taking on some serious risk...they took a long time to sign Maybin and played hardball with him, but there was a point when it looked like they'd lose him. Porcello is said to want to go to UNC, so they could well end up with nothing but a comp pick. It remains to be seen if Porcello really wants $10M, but this negotiation will be one to watch...seems very likely that they will go down to the wire. The Tigers have Casey Crosby as a backup, a kid the Brewers almost drafted but who wanted $700K, more than the Brewers were willing to pay.
  13. I mean, do you actually think a sane person would think that way? We've seen all kinds of less than classy acts visit brewerfan over the years, and sometimes people feel comfortable posting things on the internet that they wouldn't dream of saying in real life. I've seen people post things like that without a shred of irony. We've also seen that sane people aren't the only people that visit the internets. Sarcasm, absurdity, whatever, doesn't always come through so well in text. And you were just saying how you find PH attractive...which makes me personally question your sanity. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  14. If you go back to colby's DFE thread, you'll see that Tullo was coming back from Tommy John surgery...it seems like his velocity is back but sometimes the command comes a little later. They apparently throught there was enough fire in his arm to give him a little more time to work on the control.
  15. While I'm sure you're joking and trying to be funny, that's seriously not cool.
  16. Apparently they worked him out at the Brevard County park, including some outfield time, and felt that he could do it. We'll see I guess....
  17. Any normal criminal who is suicidal gets put in a straight jacket...Paris gets sent home. Any normal criminal probably doesn't have an army of attorneys ready to file a lawsuit if a lunch portion is too small, much less a suicide, on top of a battery of photographers stalking his or her every move. Though the state could probably make a deal with the family so that both parties make good money from a Paris Hilton Suicide Prevention Cell-Cam.
  18. Good discussion by all, and I agree that no one should be reticent about stating their opinions. What is nice is that people are arguing things without being personal. (If only every thread was this way!) Fermaint and Brantley is a tough call IMO. There's a very legitimate question of how much you should change your perceptions after a month or two of baseball. For young players like these guys, you have to ask if you're seeing a new level of performance or a fluctuation. Fermaint was a top fifteen or so guy before the season, and Brantley was lower on the list...but it does seem like Brantley has improved his skill set and has some serious growth potential at this point, while Fermaint has serious struggles with plate discipline. But for all that, even with a bit of a power spike Brantley has all of two HR in over 750 pro AB, and it remains to be seen if he'll have enough power to survive...is he Tony Gwynn Junior Junior? And it's still relevant to note that Fermaint's tools seem to be more highly regarded, though his instincts seem to be trailing the tools. To me, any power 50 ranking has a +/- with it, and I'd say these guys both have large uncertainties right now. If they continue on their current trajectories, it's pretty clear that their rankings will be reversed (at the very least).
  19. Brantley to H'ville is a surprise, but you have to wonder whether that's a long-term move. That makes me wonder: will Brantley be playing CF or a corner? If it's CF, then moving him to BC would cause a conflict with Ford. Maybe a Moss move is in the works as well. If a corner, Errecart and Gillespie are obvious candidates to swap places with him in the near future. They've pretty much said that LaPorta will be a corner OF in WV, but there's still a bunch of outfielders there with Fermaint moving down, and holdovers Chapman, Caufield, and LeFave (plus 1B Alonso). Holmberg is definitely another guy I'd move, but I'm irrationally attached to him. I'd think Al Escobar might move at the same time, with Crew shifting to short, but who knows.
  20. It's too bad, because Jones always impressed me as a really good kid, one with maturity well beyond his years. And despite what igor said, when he pitched he usually pitched well. I wish him well.
  21. Cross posted from another thread...I think there's way too much emphasis on the Hatteburg / Colbrunn comparison, which doesn't make all that much sense to me in the first place. From the other thread: I don't know what to make of the Colbrunn / Hatteberg comparison, partly because I don't see those two guys as similar to each other. Colbrunn was a 6th-round pick out of HS, ultimately a righty bat with some pop who didn't walk all that much...Hatteberg was more prominent on draft day, a supp first rounder from Washington State, lefty hitter with less power but a much better walk rate. So how are those two guys similar when you're talking about draft day? From what we can see, LaPorta is a good hitter with big time power, walks a lot but doesn't strike out as much as most power hitters, righty bat with mediocre defensive tools (range, arm). None of that says Colbrunn or Hatteberg to me...more like Burrell or, if we could dream, Frank Thomas. Or, on the down side, maybe a Matt LeCroy or Craig Wilson? But LaPorta doesn't seem to strike out nearly as much as those guys, though it's too soon to tell how he'll fare in the pros of course. Is LaPorta's past behind the plate part of the Colbrunn / Hatteberg comparison? Because otherwise it seems very odd.
  22. I have also noticed that colby hasn't made it so that ice cream comes out of my computer yet. So all this attention is really unnecessary until he does.

  24. If you think there's no value in compiling all that information and presenting it in an organized and entertaining fashion, I encourage you to go out on your own and find your own stuff. Considering what you paid for colby's efforts (which is to say, nothing), I think you're in a poor position to complain. Colby has also offered plenty of the insider information that you crave over the years. But hey, you can't please everyone...
