2016 Opening Day Lineup (and 2016 Batting Order Discussion)
Jenkins5 replied to pacopete4's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Has Barrios been injuried? It is a shame because I thought he would have a great chance to push for a job this spring. Wily Peralta, Chase Anderson, and Matt Garza all need career first halves or seasons. Im much more interested in watching Davies, Lopez, Hader, Houser over them. I've lost a lot of faith in Wily and he is only going to cost more money from here on out. -

Yeah I just forgot about Morales. I would agree with Flores as pretty close to a lock, the 1B option kind of cements it in my opinion For similar reasons, I think the Brewers know they have too much in Liriano (upside) to give up on him based on ST. He would appear to be a lock. You made a great point about Walsh over Perez. I personally would take Walsh 10 out of 10 times over Perez simply because I greatly value players who get on base. Considering Perez doesn't have the ability to OBP even .20-.30 above his batting average, he has little wiggle room if his bat cools off. Walsh like Chris Carter can hit .200 and still keep a .330 or so OBP (close to league average). Perez hits .200 his OBP will be .220 which is not worth a bag of balls. -

Knebel LOOGY No One Locked In CP/SU Will Smith CP/SU Jeremy Jeffress Pretty Sure bets CF Keon Broxton has gotten pretty good reviews and appears to be a close to sure thing if he doesn't fall off UT-MIF Remaining top battles UT-MIF Yadiel Rivera - Worst case scenario with him on roster is he gives the a plus defender at 3 defensive positions (SS, 2B, 3B). His bat was impressive for a large portion of last season, AFL, Winter League was brutal, but appears to have bounced back to form this spring Hernan Perez once again is hitting the ball, of course he is at 0 walks which almost matches his total from last season already. His power is coming, solid defender, gives flexibility, has shown ability to hit for decent average. I just hate his inability to take a walk. Winner as of now Yadiel Rivera UT-CIF Hernan Perez Colin Walsh Andy Wilkins Will Middlebrooks Hernan Perez once again is hitting the ball, of course he is at 0 walks which almost matches his total from last season already. His power is coming, solid defender, gives flexibility, has shown ability to hit for decent average. I just hate his inability to take a walk. Colin Walsh Has been okay, has shown his ability to walk but needs to step up overall play in order to make the team. Offers some flexibility as well. Andy Wilkins has been great with the bat so far but with Chris Carter already at 1st and him not offering much flexibility in the field, hard to see him being able to make the team. If he does, he will be there power bench bat and could excel in that role. Will Middlebrook hasn't done much to impress since his bomb in the opening game. a .474 OPS so far, isn't going to earn you a job. Garin Cecchini I didn't list because he hasn't gotten the looks the other guys have. I see him being sent down to AAA to start out the season. Winner so Far Hernan Perez Next: Colin Walsh OF 4 Ramon Flores- Out of options so needs to make the team. Thanks to his ability to play 3 OF positions and 1B, he has put himself in a good position to be able to make the team, his bat hasn't hurt his cause. Rymer Liriano- Started out generating a lot of buzz but his bat has died off. Out of options I still like him the best for the OF 4 due to potential but needs to wake back up. Eric Young Jr. His bat has been solid so far and he is what he is. Never a bad thing to have a guy like EY Jr at the back of the bench where he offers flexibility in the OF and Speed. Still a long shot Alex Pressley: Guy is showing he wants to make this team and is making the Brewers truely consider him. See how it plays out of next couple weeks. Kirk Niewenhuis- Know for his defense, his bat hasn't shown a reason to make the team yet. Been fairly disappointed so far since I had high hopes for him. Other OFs have shown much more Shane Peterson offers the flexibility you want out of the last man since he can play 3 OF spots and 1B but has failed to get bat going at all this spring so far. Outlook isn't great as of today. Winner as of today: Rymer Liriano (based on potential) Next: Alex Pressley Final Bench Bat/ OF 5 Someone who can be an Emergency OF if need be but makes the roster based on the bat or all around flexibility Colin Walsh Has been okay, has shown his ability to walk but needs to step up overall play in order to make the team. Outlook isn't great as of today. Winner so Far: Ramon Flores Next: Andy Wilkins LOOGY/ Lefty Middle to Long - I believe this team should have two lefties (since i'm biased that lefties are naturally superior) or because Smith is high leverage Set up and closer & we could use a another lefty for other situations over burning Smith. Chris Capuano Has pitched well, he can be a long reliever or do the Loogy thing. Be interesting to see if he makes it or not. He has made a good case for it. Sean Nolin same as Capuano in that he can both LR, MR, or do the Loogy thing. In a very small sample of 4games 5IP he has actually been arguably the best pitcher this spring. Cesar Jiminez based on last year, he would make on team but since he still hasn't made it to camp, he is running out of time to compete for a job. Winner as of today: Sean Nolin Next Cappy Last Bullpen Spot: Ariel Pena Zach Jones David Goforth Junior Guerra B. Boyer D. Tillman Jaye Chapman Crap shot right now Pena, Jones, and Goforth are the ones I am kindo of hoping for but Pena has been awful, Jones has been hurt, and Goforth has just been alright. Pena & Jones we will lose if they don't make team. Some team I think ill take a flier on Pena, don't see why Twins would take Jones back. Winner: Ariel Pena because he can spot start and performed well enough last year that is rough start doesn't matter much. Next. Goforth, still has an option, has gotten good experience at the mlb level So hard to judge pitchers because of all the different things they are working on Final Look: 1B Carter 2B Gennett SS Villar 3B Hill C Lucroy LF Braun CF Broxton RF Santana Bench C/1B Maladondo UT MIF Yadiel Rivera UTIF Hernan Perez OF 4 Rymer Liriano OF5/1B Ramon Flores 12 Pitchers Rotation Peralta Nelson Garza Jungmann Anderson Bullpen A. 2016 Opening Day Lineup (and 2016 Batting Order Discussion)
Jenkins5 replied to pacopete4's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
My comment was more based on how some people were acting like the sky was falling and Santana career was done after his winter ball stint and because he K's at a higher %. I didn't say he was an All-Star, I said a borderline All-Star like Cory Hart. A guy who could easily be in consideration every year. There is a good amount of similarity between their game and tools. I didn't put much emphasis in his ST numbers outside of saying his dominance has put a big smile on my face to seeing him come out mashing due to the people who have been so negative on him. He does have a track record of hitting for average, power, and getting on base outside of spring training.... -
2016 Opening Day Lineup (and 2016 Batting Order Discussion)
Jenkins5 replied to pacopete4's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
watching Santana absolutely dominant pitchers so far this Spring Training has put a big smile on my face :D Don't worry guys, he was awful in Winter Ball & has carried a higher K%, career is still over.... Even though he will more likely than not always carry a OBP over .380 and OPS .850+ Guy is a hitter, a walker, has power to all fields, and CC is seriously considering him for the lead off spot....he is only 23.... guy could be a borderline All-Star every year. Since he got him in the trade, he is very similar type of player as Corey Hart. Same build, athletic ability (Santana maybe a little more), the power, hit tool, except Santana will double Harts walks and out OBP by .40-.80 a season. He will K a little more than Hart though. I don't see Broxton as of right now not making team unless they are keeping both Liriano and Flores due to being out of options. CC has been talking him up a lot and so far, so good on his performance. Happy Arcia's bat hasn't shined. I think he still needs a lot of time in AAA to continue to grow at the plate and shouldn't be rushed. If he would come out and hit .300+ people would be calling for him opening day. -
His rankings are confusing and he made them too complicated. The "ceiling" rating was unnecessary. It just doesn't really make sense. How does he know a players ceiling? You could argue any young guy could be a 65+. Medeiros could be an ace some day. I think I would have left it as current and what he thinks. I don't think it matters much. All types of ratings are completely based off opinion not facts. They are projections.... He is telling you what he thinks the players are now, what he thinks they will likely be, and what he feels is there realistic ceiling is. He could just everyone 80s because you never how good someone could be.... I think a lot of people like having the 3 to look at but understand there are merely projections. It is one scout saying, hey I think this guy is here today, will likely be this in future (as of where he is today), but who knows, If it goes all according to plan, he could hit this ceiling. He is hardly the first scout to project what he feels is a players ceiling.... Interesting list but a good read. Always nice to read how different people analyze our system & players. There is no exact science to scouting & all is subjective to what each is looking for. "My overall opinion on Medeiros hasn’t changed much since his draft year. He could be fantastic on the mound as a starter with at times unhittable stuff, or he could be a back-end starter or late-inning relief pitcher with dirty stuff and just OK command. He’s young yet, so we can punt this at least until seeing how his second full-season year goes." I think this is pretty spot on. Until we see the leap he takes this year, hard to really assess yet what we have. He needs to begin to start pitching over throwing. He has the stuff to be frontline but if he can't harness stuff, back end rotation or bullpen will be his future
-
Peralta has been ranked fairly high on a few Mariner lists. #15 the highest I saw. Him having outstanding year only helps
-
I curious as to how? Imo there is not much similarities between the two at all outside of both had questionable hit tool. Outside of that, no aspects of their game come close to lining up. It is like comparing Gomez to Khris Davis because both don't have an outstanding approach to the plate. Reed if he proves his hit tool and contact are for real, he is a legit 5 tool stud who can do everything. Roache from day one was a one tool guy who got drafted based on his pure power stroke.
-
Has a ton of potential to be great but a big spring for him. Still a lot of questions about his bat and he will hit enough as he advances. He may take a little longer to develop as compared to Ray who appears to be pretty polished already. I don't prefer an OF at 5 but if that's the way the board falls, I'd be okay with that
-
I remember Verlander couldn't control his 100mph arm at all and the Tigers still took the gamble..... Paid off well. Your buying lottery tickets. No such thing as a sure thing, any of the top 4 could easily bust or be injury plagued. Pint is most raw and has pitched by far the least. He is s 2-3 sport stud, who I think is an outstanding ball player. Parents never really let him put the wear & tear on his arm that most do. Very limited showcases & code games I believe. Has the arm you die for, it's very fresh, never had spent much time just focusing and being coached as to how to pitch. Groom, Hansen, Puk all taken already..... Pint or Lowe are way to go, maybe Perez

Michael Reed shows up to camp buffed up
Jenkins5 replied to Matt Breen's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
For Perez, having a batting average almost higher than his obp out weighs his need to add power, def if OBP is something DS cares about. Until he shows any ability to walk, he shouldn't make the team -
http://m.astros.mlb.com/news/article/164812320 Well it's official....Khris Davis has the saddest most pathetic noodle arm in baseball.... Dead last (#121) averaging 78 mph on competitive throws (Gomez 2nd best at 98 mph). To say the least, I'm not sad to see that are go in LF. Could score on him all day
-
Yes. Outside of one of Profar/Mazara/Brinson/Tate for the main piece (I'd prefer Profar), Ariel Jurado is THE 2nd piece I need. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the Rangers' Top 5 at mid-season. He seems like the kind of pitcher Stearns likes too: 90-93mph sinker, nice curve and change, great control/command for a 20-year old. I could go for a Pedro Payano (RHP) throw-in as the 3rd piece too. You my friend have a brilliant mind! Ha same two pitchers I have really focused on. Mendez I wouldn't mind at all or Brett Martin for late throw in. Payano had a stellar breakout year rising from DSL to A ball. Advanced stat stud. I want nothing to do with Ortiz, he'll look like he eat Todd Coffee in a couple of years. Give me Profar, Brinson, or Tate. Then Jurado or Mendez, then Taveras or Morgan...Martin or Payano if going pitcher
-
Yeah agree, we need pitching. This will be a huge draft for us & we need to hit on 1 of those top pitchers at #5. Then maybe another big arm in 2nd round. We have guys but they need to start making the jump. To bad Kirby will miss all season.
-
Sign me up in a heart beat for a Lucroy 4 Honeywell, Bauer, Faria deal! That'd be a no brainer in a second. Brinson/Jurado over Gallo/Ortiz for me. Gallo can't make contact & Ortiz will eat himself out of baseball before 25

Simple Change to Fix Drafting/Tanking of All Major Sports
Jenkins5 replied to rickh150's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Tanking really isn't as big of a situation as it is made out to be. Outside of 76ers, there are not to many professional teams who actually intentionally lose year after year with no attempt to be better. This has been going on in baseball since the beginning. It is nothing new. In baseball, you sometimes need to rebuild and restock talent. It is not tanking, it is rebuilding. There is nothing unfair or bad about rebuilding. Baseball is a sport where a team like the Brewers have very little options to compete with large market teams because they can't fork out 20 million dollar contracts to handful of okay players. They need to develop own talent and trade for it. Simple as that. The issue is that this year and time period, many teams are rebuilding at once, usually it is more spread out. The draft in baseball is so useless to tank for. Way to many variables. The chances of getting your Bryce Harper at #1 overall who will carry your franchise largely on their back is highly improbable. There are 25 players on a team and no matter how good one player is, they will not be enough to win you anything. Having the top SP in baseball is great but what do you do the other 4 nights? Its great to have next Babe Ruth, but what good is he if the other 8 guys can't get job done. Really the most elite player may WAR you 10 games. That isn't enough on it's own to do much. Not to forget baseball probably has the largest bust rate of any sport and a player can bust at many points in their career. They can bust as soon as they are draft, they can be a star prospect and bust entering majors and flame out, or they can make it to majors and bust in terms of never living up to the hype. From my perspective, that is just a gosh awful decision. The signing pool is a new concept which needs to go & has created a much bigger issue. Fix the awful system they have put in place and life & the draft will be much better. -
I don't see Chicago. Hard to see the Cubs give up the type of prospects they will need to in order to get Lucroy in the division. Moreover, I don't like their prospects that much....they don't match up very well at all. Contreras is no longer really needed as a catcher for the future, Torress fills a major strength for us.... can't have 4-5 SS between Helena and Wisconsin prior to even the draft, they have almost no exciting pitchers...maybe Cease? McKinley is okay....no Brinson. Vogelbach can hit but can't play defense at 1b at all. Baez, would struggle to make contact if a pitcher was throwing a volleyball. Not worth it, stick to teams like Rays, Nats, Rangers who match up well
-
So what you are saying is they are rebuilding, not tanking..... Stearns is not putting a roster together in order to not compete or avoid winning baseball games in order to get higher draft pick and larger signing pool.... That is tanking.... Tanking is the 76ers who intentionally constructed a roster year after year to lose as many games as humanly possible and trade off any player who starts to show promise. Lakers are not tanking, they are rebuilding and just bad. When Bucks were terrible a few years ago, they were not tanking, they just were not good.... at all. On paper they should have been competitive and fell pretty short. They did nothing to intentionally lose. DS took over a team and is creating a roster that fits what he wants. He is bringing in guys he feels are undervalued and have a chance to perform. He is making trades to improve outlook for sustain success in the future. That is not tanking.....Tanking is purely going out there with the intentions of losing as many games as humanly possible. I honestly don't think DS cares if the Brewers win 68 games or if they some how won 82 games. He is not GM'ing this team to tank for draft picks & signing pool. That is not his goal. Tanking is intentionally losing or putting your team in a position with no opportunity to be competitive in order to receive higher draft pick or signing pool cash. Rebuilding is restructuring your system and roster in order to build a new model for success with new personal, vision, goals, and methods to achieve success for now to the future. To me, Brewers are in absolutely zero way tanking.

People get excited for different things. You need your Herb Kohl approach to enjoy it. I am more excited to watch the process and players get chances and blossom. That is my favorite thing about baseball. Being able to follow a prospect through the system, see them get there chance, and how they grow. I am a teacher and a coach so to me, that is where my passion lies. In my time as a Brewer fan, there is no more exciting period for me than the 2004-2008 period. I found this site in 8th grade or 9th grade back in 2002. That is where I started to follow the minor league system closely and the MLB was brutal. Following Hardy, Hart, Fielder, Hendrickson, Weeks,B. Nelson, Gywnn Jr, Parra then Gallardo & Braun etc. travel through the system and then finally start hitting majors was great! Hart cranking a monster HR in his first AB that just went foul. Weeks and Fielder getting 1st bombs same day....following them to grow into a contender. Macha came and destroyed player development and wrecked two years of us competing for a championship. To me Santana, Liriano, Broxton, Flores, Cecchini, Villar are the reason I watch this year. I want to see those at bats. At the end of last year, if Davies, Lopez or another young arm wasn't on the mound or if Santana wasn't in line-up, I usually didn't even watch. I was excited to see Domingo get his ABs and Davies hit the mound. Win or lose, doesn't matter. Ill go to games because I love to go to games with friends and family and I love to watch baseball. Winning or losing have no impact on that. I think CC will do a good job with the OF. Liriano will probably be the "starting CF" but they most likely will have a 4 man rotation with Liriano the main LF/RF Backup. The biggest question is who the other 2 OFs will be. Flores if healthy for Spring I think will make it, out of options. Niewenhuis, Broxton, EY jr compete for last spot

"Bubba Derby's real name is Bowdien Henry Asa Derby, which may actually be a better name than Bubba, but that's a story for another time. Derby has exceptional arm strength, and when he was working as the San Diego State closer early in his time for the Aztecs, he'd get his fastball up to 98 mph. As a starter, the fastball is still plus, sitting 92-94 with late life. His best offspeed pitch is a change that he throws too much, but it flashes above-average with his quick arm speed and a smidgen of late fade. The slider isn't where it needs to be at this point as it's often flat and doesn't have the depth you'd look for in a starter's breaking ball. He's also battled command issues, and as a pitcher who stands under six feet tall, there are concerns about his durability. If the Brewers chose to move him to the bullpen he could become a high-leverage guy because of his arm strength and two quality pitches, but no should blame Milwaukee if they chose to see if the breaking ball improves, as there's no. 4 starter potential if/when that slider sharpens." —Christopher Crawford

Lucroy & Anderson would be about the same I'd think. Peralta IMO has a ton of value if he bounces back to 2014 performance. You hold on to Peralta until at least the deadline, if he is hot, he could net you a real nice return alone.
-
You get this off 37 innings from a former college pitcher in A ball? FWIW, he seems a solid second guy thrown in to the trade, but there are an endless amount of guys who did well in very tiny sample sizes at A ball like 37 innings is and that ended up being the main high point of their professional baseball careers. I'll start getting a little more excited about Derby's future if he pitches really well once he reaches AA ball and then can repeat that success in AAA. What do you think Thornburg was? A three year college player who dominated in the same fashion in his small sample in R+/A- at 20/21. The have same body type with decent power for size. Both rely heavily on an outstanding change up that is their #1 out pitch. Thornburg 9G, 6GS, 23.1 IP 1.96ERA, 11BB, 38K, 1.11WHIP, .179 Ave 14.46 k/9 4.24 bb/9, 39% k% to 11% bb% 3.54 FIP Derby 12G, 8GS, 34.2 IP 0.78 ERA, 10BB, 45K, 0.84 WHIP, .161 Ave 11.7 k/9 2.6 bb/9, 35% k% to 8% bb% 2.54 FIP We here were very excited for Thornburg after that showing as he rose all the way to #11 to start 2011 season in the Power 50. I am not saying he is Thornburg 100% but I believe he is overlooked in the trade. He could be a real nice pitcher in our system. He doesn't need to reach AA to think he could be a good pitcher
