  1. Nah. Even if the Cards win today, you play to win today and tomorrow, and go into Friday two games down. Oh, I agree totally. Was just saying the stakes/level of hope get much higher with a Cardinal loss this afternoon. Certainly, you play to win the division as much as possible (without doing something crazy like burning Hader for 4 innings in the next two days or something) until the math says you don't.
  2. Well, Cards with an afternoon game, so we'll know what's at stake re: the division early on in this one (unless they play 19 again). But, no matter what happens in the desert, this is what you play for. Win and into the postseason. Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  3. I think Martinez is playing coy. I have a hard time seeing him pulling Scherzer, even if he gives up, say, two runs in the second inning. Obviously, if it looks like he just doesn't have it, he'll come out, but he's going to have the leash an elite pitcher gets in an elimination game. I don't see Martinez pulling him to go with Stras, for example, who, good as he is, just isn't on the same level (FIP nearly a full run higher).
  4. I think the Pirates get one too. Just very rare that an MLB team drops 12 in a row, and the Pirates are sitting at 9 straight losses. Lot of game left in the desert, especially in that park and even with the humidor.
  5. I'm not celebrating anything yet. Tough pitching matchups in Cincy, and who knows what will ever happen at Coors? The Cubs and Mets could both get hot, and we finish 2-4 or worse. I don't think that's the most likely outcome, but we still have work to do. If and when we do clinch, I'm going to celebrate and enjoy the hell out of it. It's baseball. If you asked every team in the league if they'd take being 86-70, 4 up on the WC, and 3 back in the division with a week left, maybe 26 or 27 would say yes. Playoffs in baseball, even the one-game variety, are the toughest to achieve in any of the major sports, and it's worth commemoration (flag or no flag) and champagne no matter what. I'm thinking about the 90s and early 2000s and knowing that being a Milwaukee baseball fan means you will lose more than you will win. It's the nature of MLB economics. Given that, I think defining success as WS titles or even pennants is just a set up for disappointment. The playoffs are random. The Brewers are on the verge of a massive, odds-defying success. If we take the last few steps, I'm going to enjoy the crap out of it, and I hope we deck out another visiting clubhouse in champagne. The chances to do so are so, so rare.
  6. Strong outing from Williams. Hope the pitching staff can keep doing its thing here. Two runs isn't enough for me...
  7. I hope the plan is NOT to give Hader 3 innings. That isn't what he typically does, if that was their plan, I'd hope they build him up to that rather than just toss him into that role. Didn't he struggle in that 3 inning role earlier in the season? You know, when he was their only real relief option, before things got figured out in the bull pen? You're right. A better way to say it: I think Hader can go 3 if needed and well-rested. But, yeah. 2 is better if it works that way. I wouldn't hesitate to bring him in in the 7th if the leverage is high enough, though. Maybe that means someone else gets all or part of the 9th.
  8. Yeah, I don't see Woody throwing more than 3 in a WC anyway. Probably go Woody, Suter, Hader (3, 3, 3) in an ideal scenario, or else maybe Gio or Jackson or Pomeranz get an inning or so just to limit exposure for Suter. He is being used essentially as he will be used. With maybe precaution just so he can actually be used to the fullest extent possible within that limited range.
  9. Not a great start with RISP. Williams found the strike zone real quick. Made a couple good pitches.
  10. I know there are rules about what color sleeves pitchers can wear. Surprised someone hasn't tried to tattoo their arms in white and red ink. Edit: Although I am sure the umps would just makes that pitcher wear a blue sleeve all the time or something...
  11. They would probably force you to do a double header. That Monday is set aside for Game 163 games. They want everything done before that day. It really isn’t an open day to play. I really doubt they would move it so a team can make up a regular season rain out, that is what I am saying. They need to be done incase of a Game 163 on Monday.[/quote We will see what happens tomorrow. Maybe the rain holds off. But there are no mutual off days remaining for the Cubs and Cards. If it is a washout, and if it ends up mattering, I don't know when that game could be played other than the 30th. And it would have to be played in Chicago. I cannot see a double header if it would mean, for example, STL going from Chicago to STL and then, say, MIL or STL, having to go to WAS for a WC. Admittedly, far-fetched...
  12. In weird possibilities news... The Cubs and Cards may well not play tomorrow. Forecast is bad. It would kind of awesome if we finished .5 games up on Stl for the division, and they had to fly to Wrigley on Monday to play the makeup game. Then you probably couldn't have the WC on Tuesday. Would be crazy scheduling havoc.
  13. Scherzer's scheduled day is Monday. So he could go again on Saturday and be available out of the pen on Tuesday. I doubt that will happen. I imagine the Nats hold him back. The issue then is just he's going to be on 7 days rest. Does that mean he will be fresh? Or rusty? I don't know. Put it like this: I think you live with K's in an elimination game against Scherzer. You hope your depth can bullpen its way to six or seven scoreless or at least keep them at 2 runs. Then you can always win it late, even if Scherzer shuts you down. Of course, they could throw Scherzer then Stras if they wanted to punt a potential Game 1 against LA. Basically, you are going to have to hit good pitching. Hope the boys are up to it.
  14. I'm thinking more big picture. I want the division that way you avoid the win or go home scenario right out of the chute. Not to mention the fact if you did somehow catch fire it's far easier to get to a World Series that way. Totally fair. I don't think there's a wrong answer. Any outcome is good, provided we keep winning.
  15. I think I am still going Cardinals today. The path to the division is so narrow, and I don't like watching Wrigley get going. It's a bit of a fine line, I guess, because you want the Cards to have something to play for those last three games too, bit knowing we could be only 1 up if we lose tonight would make the game much more stressful...
  16. Weather dicey in Chicago. Probably will get today in, but tomorrow looks bad. Wouldn't be surprised if it's ppd, with potential makeup on Sept. 30th if necessary. Not sure who that would hurt/help.
  17. Interesting. Castellanos is only 11 doubles shy of the major league record. That's nuts, given that it just made a list of "unbreakable" MLB records.
  18. Yeah, if someone told me we were for sure going 4-0, I'd root for the Cubs to take at least 2. In the meantime, though, I'd rather reduce the playoff number. The division would be awesome, but it's really unlikely, and I sort of feel like we lost it back in August when we were playing mediocre baseball, and the Cards were tearing up (mostly the dregs of) the National League.
  19. Imagine what the Cardinal board is saying about that runner at third and less than two outs thing... ...not that I blame them. Big missed chance there, especially with Goldschmidt hitting.
  20. Rizzo is not ready to play. Hobbled after a bunt in the third. He is playing because he has to, basically, and there's probably no concerrn about structural damage. But he looks bad limping around.
