  1. So, last night, Ramon Flores is on second base. First and third are unoccupied. There are no outs. The Giants are playing up the middle (Brian and Bill called it a shift, but it looked more like "shading" to me), so the shortstop is between Flores (post-lead) and second base. Pressley, pinch-hitting, hits a ground ball up the middle (behind Flores). Flores runs. The shortstop fields, spins, throws to third, and Flores is toast. I have two questions arising from this: 1) In that situation, isn't it better for Flores to retreat to the bag, screening the shortstop and maybe being hit by the ball (after all, if he's struck while standing on the bag, he's not out, right?)? This would obviously take some quick thinking, but if the fielders are shading up the middle, it might help Pressley reach. 2) Are there other situations where baserunning strategy should or could be optimized based on where the fielders are initially positioned? I can see, for example, a second and third scenario where the runner on second retreats to the bag on a ground ball up the middle too, making any throw home or to first really tricky. Not sure it makes much difference in the end, but I was thinking about it.
  2. I just finished watching the Ken Burns documentary on Jackie Robinson on PBS, and I'll concur with what seems to be the general consensus. It's a great watch, especially Part Two. As a sort of "Easter Egg," one of the last images shown as the credits roll features three Brewers wearing number 42. I wasn't able to get a good look, but I think it's Corey Hart, Ryan Braun, and Mike Cameron celebrating a 9-3 win over the Reds in 2009. Cameron hit two homers that day. If anyone DVR'd it, you might be able to confirm.
  3. A little fight in the ninth at least. Well, 27 to go. 14 home. 13 road. 7 against the Cards. 3 against the Pirates. Just gotta hope this team finds a way to stay in it into the last week.
  4. Some of the pitches that Sandoval makes contact with are ridiculous.
  5. I feel bad for him. You know it's somewhat mental when even his defense feels iffy. About time Gomez came up with another big hit....or have about the worst AB possible.
  6. Man, how about Davis' luck tonight? And then Reynolds breaks his bat... Now it's time for the wheels to come off. Wouldn't be the first time.
  7. Fiers with another solid outing. One bad inning where a ground ball I thought Ramirez should have made a better play on really hurt. On the plus side, you have to think a low point is coming soon... Also on the plus side, Melvin Gordon.
  8. Today feels like an especially important day in the Central. After the games are through tonight, the Cards, Pirates, and Crew will all have played 135 times. A sweep either way in that double header could set the storyline for September. Cubs up 5-1 right now, and the Cards had to go to the bullpen early. Though with reinforcements on the way, it probably doesn't matter much. Not to mention Lyons has been the only guy used so far. We'll see. You have to think either the Brewers or Cards will turn things around soon.
  9. This doesn't feel like a game where three runs wins, but man. Hurts to come up empty there. When was the last time Rami hit one out? Unless he gets really hot, he's going to end up with fewer homers than Reynolds, Gomez, and Davis. He's had a great year, but I wouldn't have expected such a low HR total.
  10. Question for some of the stat people. That ball that Marte hit was smoked. Yet, it goes (rightfully) as an error. Which means it lowers the BABIP against Kintzler. Why don't people use OBP on balls in play? Aren't there some ways in which that stat might more accurately reflect a pitcher's performance over time? Assuming that harder hit balls are more likely to result in errors? It could be that I'm just overthinking it or missing something very basic, but it seems weird that errors are factored in to BABIP. Of course, it could also be that this game is so bad I need something else to think about.
  11. And Manny Parra on to pitch. So at what point does Neshek replace Rosenthal? Hopefully never Didn't Matheny give Rosenthal the "vote of confidence" yesterday? So, given the history of "votes of confidence," you'd guess Neshek gets named the closer tomorrow, right? The crazy thing is with all the crazy bullpen chaos, St. Louis has lost exactly one of their last five games. They've been really luck given the weird phantom tag against SD and pretty much giving up leads throughout the whole series. They were up 3-0 tonight too. You have to think they lose one of these games sometime soon. And as I type, Burjos leans into a pitch from Parra. I'd be pretty surprised if the Cards don't bring him around. Here's hoping. Edit: Double play for the Reds. Which means I should probably go to sleep and just hope for the best.
  12. That's an awesome list, Wildcat. I would add Braun's ninth inning home runs in that April Pirates series to this thread.
  13. Strikeout notwithstanding, Herrera has looked pretty good at the plate when given a chance. It's nice to see.
  14. I'd actually recommend parking over the light rail. There are a couple of five dollar lots around, which is actually cheaper than train fare. If I remember right, one is on 7th St., right between Nicollet and Hennepin. It's a short walk from there to the park. The train is a good option too, but it does tend to be pretty crowded for games. I'd echo the comments about the third base side. Generally, those are the best views of the field, and you can't beat the skyline.
  15. Today's win feels great. Nice to have a day off tomorrow. If Gomez is dinged up a little, the suspension might not be the end of the world (though the timing is horrible in other ways). Getting Braun back in the lineup will be huge. Rickie was great offensively today (and all series). Scratching and clawing out wins in true "gritty" fashion.
  16. Glad Gomez appears to be okay. At least serving a suspension will give him a few days off. Still, the timing really couldn't be worse. Need Braun, Luc, and Segura to really hit next week. Back in the game for now. Garza needs a quick one. Get back out there, offense.
  17. Ugly start. Looks like there will be a Wang sighting today. Hopefully Garza can settle and the pen can at least keep it within reach. Long way to go and taking 2 of 3 would be so nice. Either way, nice to have a day off tomorrow.
  18. Big win. Of course, CC would have finished the game No, but seriously. Taking nothing away from Peralta. He would have. I have to think some Reds fan somewhere has created a parody video featuring "Roger Bernadina" and set to the tune of "Funky Cold Medina." I can't believe it's not his walk up music.
  19. Boy when Davis has a bad AB he really has a bad AB. Not looking good up there tonight.
  20. Thanks, SRB. That's perfect. Not that it's going to entirely explain his struggles from last year, but I'm at least glad to know I haven't been entirely making things up (which has been known to happen).
  21. I have no statistical data to back this up, but it seems to me like part of Gallardo's evolution as a pitcher has been adjusting to an increasing inability to miss bats with two strikes. He can still throw good pitches with two strikes, but his stuff doesn't seem to move as much as in his best years. I don't mean that as a complaint, but I'd love to see a FanGraphs style breakdown of his Whiff% with two strikes throughout his career. Nice to get out of that inning. Give him something, boys. At least cut out the double plays.
  22. That's a cool article. Not to nitpick, but I guess they're treating the March 31st win as an April win? Seems like that's not something the stats agencies would do...
  23. Tomorrow's lineup could look just a little bit funny. Nice to get the W tonight. 4-2 homestand guaranteed. Hope Peralta comes up big, and the Crew gets a sweep!
  24. It seems like every time Overbay comes to the plate, he's been hitting the ball hard lately. Lots of line drives and a 30 AB slash line of .267/.405/.433. Way to go, Lyle!
  25. Agree with most of this. Lepay's made a few mistakes (which, of course, not even Ueck is immune from), but his voice comes with such a Wisconsin connotation that I think it gives the games more atmosphere even than when Anderson's doing them. He brings that radio style that I really like. A note on Block, I agree that he doesn't have the same enthusiasm, but there are things he brings to the table. As far as game descriptions go, he's up there for me. I think he knows the game, and he does bring some good baseball insight into the broadcast. Plus, I think he's pretty good at teeing Ueck up for some color. Didn't people criticize Provus early in his tenure, mainly on the grounds that he wasn't Jim Powell? I feel like Block takes a different approach, but he also hasn't been able to call a team as much fun as the 2011 version like Provus did. We have just been spoiled announcer wise. Other than the Cleveland radio guys, I just don't think there are very many other pairs I'd rather listen to. I guess the Oakland guys are pretty good too, and the Reds team can be fun as well. Maybe it's time for FanGraphs to update their announcer rankings. Edit: Just after thinking about it, I do generally enjoy WGN broadcasts. Kasper's good, and his partner (who's name escapes me) has really improved. They talk a fair amount about advanced metrics and generally do a very fun broadcast, especially during idle weekday afternoons.
