  1. Badgers 3 pt. Home underdogs tonight. A little surprised at that.
  2. This makes sense and shows the "obvious" thing that maybe isn't getting enough attention. Pure and simple, the owners have the leverage. They don't need games the same way the bulk of the players do, and they know a good chunk of the casual fan base will blame the players for any missed games because, well, that's how it works in a capitalist system. It's easy to blame highly visible millionaires while billionaires hide behind the curtain.
  3. Apparently a bad negotiating day today after progress yesterday. MLB is by far my favorite sport, but I am pretty zen about how sad this state of affairs is. Just not worth bothering following the day-to-day. I'll be happy if there are games this summer, but, honestly, if not, whatever. Plenty else to do and watch. Mostly, I think the owners are fundamentally dishonest and the players are doing a pretty bad job of representing the "bottom" two-thirds of their membership, who would clearly benefit more from a salary floor than a higher lux tax threshold. That's not me trying to "both sides" it. Just me saying the whole system is based on lack of transparency and the wrong incentives.
  4. And it goes as Q2 because of Rutgers' weird resume. Ho hum. Another big, tough Badger W. Can win at least at share by beating Nebraska at home, but I'm good with getting greedy.
  5. Yeah, good finish to that game (though it makes me a little sick to root for Sparty--I actually like Purdue). Doesn't change the calculus much for an outright title. Still have to win out. Does really improve the odds of a share, though. Go 2-1 in any combo, and you got it.
  6. With OSU winning in Illinois, the Badgers control their destiny for an outright B1G title. Wow. If they can beat Rutgers Saturday, that Purdue game is likely for all the marbles. Can't lose a home game against Nebraska. If you do, with the title on the line, you should drop about 3 seed lines. Anyway, getting ahead of myself. Really need a win in NJ. Get that, and the big national spotlight is in Madison next week. Rutgers will be playing for its tourney life again. Going to be tough.
  7. I started off by saying I agreed with all of what you said so I'll go with we mostly agree as well. You were saying maybe 25% on Gard and I was saying maybe 3% but same idea. Gard should have let it go until the presser when as you note he was better able to control himself. I'm sure he'd handle it differently if he had to do it again. And again, none of this justifies what Howard did. Sorry, I misread your second post as putting more blame on Gard than I thought. My fault. We'll see how the B1G sorts it. I am guessing Neath, and the two Michigan players each get 1-2 games. Howard gets at least 4. Gard issues some sort of contrite public statement.
  8. I see your point for sure. I see it like this: Gard should've handled it better. I do think, though, that it's pretty natural human instinct to try and explain your actions when someone confronts you about them, especially when you feel you are justified. If Howard had got in my face, I probably would have gotten a little fired up and tried to verbally defend myself. That's not to say it's right. It's to say that I understand Gard's actions way more than Howard's, even if both are wrong. Gard should own his actions and try not to get so easily riled up when someone takes offense. That's a totally different ballpark than Howard. We mostly agree. I just do think Gard's screw up is minor compared to Howard's. Is it minor in a vacuum? I think probably? The biggest thing I think Gard did wrong was just rising to the bait a bit too much--he got a bit too vehement in talking to Howard, I think because he was more upset than he let on in the post game interviews about the full-court press. He didn't want Howard to get the last word. Maybe I just have the same problem.
  9. This is not true. Howard didn't even get in line to shake hands initially - he waited, and the announcers saw that and commented on that. Then when Howard approached Gard, and Howard dropped his mask and said, "I'll remember that ****[/url]", and you can see on the video Howard dropping his mask as he approaches Gard. That's when Gard reacted and stopped him, according to Gard to try to explain why he did what he did. Gard didn't stop Howard because he passed him or disrespected him - Howard started it by swearing at Gard first. Proof: Davison demanding to sing Varsity to the students nearest the Michigan bench is my favorite part of that clip.
  10. It's like those actuarial car crashes. No one is ever 100% at fault. Set the ratio how you want. For me, maybe 25% is on Gard/Krabby/etc. for not walking away. Let Juwan be mad. Whatever. The rest, though, is just a Michigan team that isn't very good looking for an excuse to get mad. If Howard had hit anyone but a built former player who himself has an imposing presence, no doubt he'd be fired. As is, he'll probably be suspended multiple games, and that will probably be light, especially given that he doubled down on all of it at the post game presser. Should Gard or anyone on UW get a suspension? I don't know. I can see a game for Gard to send a message, but I think that's more about optics than anything. Having him issue a statement owning his part in it ("I have to be better, I represent the university, our young men handled it better than I did, blah, blah, blah") seems more appropriate.
  11. I couldn't tell if Gard was trying to explain or pissed at Howard or both. He and Krabbenhoff probably just need to move on their way there, but obviously that's just horrible from Howard. And yeah, he's the instigator all around. I think players from UW will avoid suspension. Neath looked like he was shoving a bit, but everyone else looked pretty well clear/effectively held back.
  12. 4 seems right. Play well the rest of the way, maybe you bump up to a 3. Hard to see them getting to a 2 or falling below 5 right now. Really want to beat Michigan today to keep to B1G race interesting and to put a dent in the Wolverines at-large resume.
  13. It would be kind of fun to have 8 teams and you play each team once with the top 4 advancing to the semis or 1 play 2 and 3 play 4 or something. I realize it's a lot of games, but the one and done in hockey is tricky, BUT everyone has it. That 17 year old from Slovakia has a nice shot and some silky mitts. Yeah. The other thing is the shootout/3v3 OT. I remember knowing we were toast in 2010, even after the awesome late goal to tie. 4-on-4, and Crosby did Crosby things. Again, it makes total sense, and yeah. Same rules for everyone, but it just bugs me that group games mean so, so little.
  14. Yeah, another Olympic heartbreak for men's hockey. I really don't like the Olympic format. To go from 3 zero-stakes games to one all-or-nothing one isn't great. I understand why they do it, but I wish it were more like curling, where you have to be really good in group to make the medal round. Speaking of curling, US men will have a win and in tonight against the worst team in the group. Women got off to a strong start but look ready to be eliminated as I type.
  15. Yeah, the fire is there for sure. They play so together on the road. It's on of my favorite things about Wisconsin as a program, and it's the big thing making me optimistic for March. Wisconsin seems to be the best version of itself when it's got one real pro. Harris, Leueur, Kaminsky, Tucker (who didn't have a great career but was a lottery pick IIRC). Then, a bunch of tough role guys and guards that rebound. This year's team fits that mold. They just have to find an outside shot.
  16. It's not just Americans. Jackson beat everyone in the world at this event. Speed skating is practically the Dutch national pastime. In a short time, she became better than a bunch of people who have been trying to perfect this their whole lives. I don't think the difficulty of speed skating translates that well to TV. There's clearly a legit, genius-level skill happening when you can achieve what Jackson did, especially when you also consider that no American reached her level of success in decades. If it was anywhere near easy, she wouldn't have been the first American to win that event in 30 years.
  17. Yeah, a bad year for the Horizon League all around. Conference realignment really did a number on what used to be a very, very strong league.
  18. Erin Jackson's live gold medal was something this morning. A fun race, and a great story.
  19. Kind of felt that one coming, both because Rutgers is basically playing for its life, and Wisconsin was in classic let-down position after the win Tuesday. The part that stings is that that's a real blow to the B1G title hopes. I care about that a medium amount, I guess. This team looks to me like it'll settle into the 4-5 seed range, and we'll hope we don't draw a mediocre Power 5 team with lots of athleticism and size in the first two rounds.
  20. Added hype/pressure to perform isn't anything new in terms of Olympic buildup - and the US isn't even close to being among the countries who raise expectations and pressure on their own athletes the most. With what happened in Tokyo during last summer's Olympics with Simone Biles and what appears to be happening with Shiffrin, I think there's a big impact on not having family/close friend support systems there in person for athletes to lean on if things don't go according to plan and negativity quickly snowballs mentally. Skiing events in particular, oftentimes the order of the racers, ski wax choice, and changing snow conditions play a huge role in who actually medals in those events. This is very insightful. Thanks. I agree. I thought of Biles too.
  21. And the first US gold of the games too. I remember watching that Turino race on tape delay, knowing the result, and thinking, "Wait...how does she not win?!?" It has to feel really good to suddenly become well-known for overcoming that loss instead of for letting off the gas just enough to cost yourself a gold medal.
  22. These Badgers are pretty good when healthy and defending. Very tough even if they don't wow you, but they beat you just the same. Typical Wisconsin is what I'm saying.
  23. NBC cursing out loud as Shiffrin skis out again. I feel for her because she's an incredible athlete, but US skiers seem to have a poor hype to impact ratio fairly often. Hope she can rebound for her final three events. Though it looks like she might be hurt? The bronze medal from Jessie Diggins was cool. The sprint is a fun event in Nordic.
  24. The Men's 5000 m speedskating final was really, really cool. Swedish skater (big favorite) looked pretty out of it, and then pulled out the fastest lap of the day to win gold against a Dutch athlete (who looked just absolutely crushed). About as good as just pure athletic competition gets from an all around perspective. Really fun race. Just finished watching it now. Doing the math in my head, he was virtually 15 yards behind with one lap to go. One thing about Winter vs Summer is just the fact of fewer sports to follow. Yeah, I find Winter just more manageable from a viewing perspective. I agree that primetime coverage has been jumpy. USA has all-day replays, which is nice, I think.
