  1. I think a lot of it is teams know. Don't give Johnny good looks. And they will sell out to stop it. It's a good strategy. If Crowl is making threes or Wahl is getting little 9-foot bank shots, fine. Maybe they make enough to get you, but it's better than letting Davis dominate. That's how I'd defend the Badgers anyway. Davis gets doubled. Someone's always ready to close on Davison. Make guys who can't score score. Penn State did exactly that, and it nearly got them a good road win against a better team. The Big Ten is really well-scouted. I expect Davis will go off for 30 again a couple times, but nobody will make it easy.
  2. The Men's 5000 m speedskating final was really, really cool. Swedish skater (big favorite) looked pretty out of it, and then pulled out the fastest lap of the day to win gold against a Dutch athlete (who looked just absolutely crushed). About as good as just pure athletic competition gets from an all around perspective. Really fun race.
  3. Yeah, an ugly, ugly win. But...a win? I guess?
  4. This is definitely the worst time zone for the Olympics. Just really hard when most live events are happening between about 7pm and 7am. You catch some early events in primetime, but all the main action is middle of the night. I do enjoy biathlon and cross-country skiing a lot. And curling, in addition to hockey and speed skating.
  5. Yup. 100. And Canada probably has the best player in CONCACAF in Davies. And I worry that all the set piece goals last night will keep the players timid in run-of-play situations, which I see as a big, big problem. I'll give Berhalter credit for sitting Pulisic. That's a pretty gutsy move, and it did seem like Christian responded. Bottom line for me re: weather is we're at a point as a national team where we should be aiming to be as good as the European and South American nations. Or, at least, to be able to compete at that level. Playing weird psych out games against the worst team in the region does not further that goal. Look, lesser teams from less economically advanced nations are always going to mess with the US. That's life. But if you want to be a world class soccer team, you really should want to develop great, young soccer talent and then let them play soccer in the best conditions possible. Win on talent. Stop messing around. If you can't win on talent and with that budget, you've got way bigger problems than where you play the game.
  6. At this point, I think it's worth asking whether Marquette has a higher ceiling than Wisconsin. I think I would lean toward yes. Both are very good l, and that's a great thing for basketball in the state.
  7. Well, it worked out. US looking pretty good. They get Panama at home. 4 pts in 3 games should do it. Costa Rica might scare me more than Panama at this point. We'll see.
  8. No answer for Kofi, and they shot horribly from 3. It happens. And while I'm not at all worried about the Badgers, I do think dropping this one and the home game vs. MSU two weeks back is the results catching up to the predictive metrics a bit. Badgers have a great resume. Are they a great team? Jury's out. I'll say this: If they shoot it at all from three, they'll be in every game, and I have no worries about their toughness in close ones.
  9. It's going to be 5 degrees at kickoff in Saint Paul on Wednesday. I don't get why you want to play in cold weather. I know Honduras is not going to be used to it, but, like, you're the more talented team! By a longshot. Why you choose to play in Saint Paul in February is beyond me from a competition standpoint. It just introduces more of a fluke factor, and the US has not looked happy playing in 30 degree weather the last two matches.
  10. Canada has been by far the best team in CONCACAF this cycle. Hard not to like them. Honduras at home on Wednesday pretty much a must win for the US. Waiting on other results, but you don't want to be on 18 or 19 pts with @Mexico and @Costa Rico looming. CONCACAF getting drawn against Oceania for the playoff is a break. Should the US finish fourth, they'd still be significant favorites to qualify, but this team is just way too talented to finish fourth in CONCACAF. I am pretty down on Berhalter and have been all cycle. Too late to change course now, but he'll need to have this team ready for a real four-game grind.
  11. Can't win 'em all. Providence is a fun team. That place was pretty fired up, and it was an incredible basketball game. You're not going to find many tougher teams than Marquette and Providence.
  12. Minnesota has a game squad. They look just a lot tougher than years past---I think Pitino was the total wrong guy for that program. They need to follow the Wisconsin model and not try to outrecruit everyone. Johnson is off to a good start in that department. Another first place showdown in Champaign on Wednesday. Hard to expect a win, but I hope they play like @Purdue and not like @Ohio State.
  13. Looks like it is on Paramount so I can watch it, I knew I had that for more than Star Trek. Overlaps with the AFC game but I will sort of watch both. I am not sure where US soccer interest is, when I lived in South Florida it was always a big deal, an Irish Bar I frequented was often packed on Sunday mornings. Back in Wisconsin I was surprised how much interest there was the last time the US was in the World Cup, a lot of people like me who just get interested once every 4 years. I would probably have some interest in MLS if Milwaukee had a team but knowing it is still pretty much a minor league probably keeps even dedicated US fans following the Premier League instead. Yeah, and I wonder if there's a streaming/broadcast rights shift that prevents the networks from televising over the air? I suppose there may just also be a bigger audience on Paramount than CBS Sports Network, especially since Paramount also has Champion League games if I'm remembering right? The streaming economy is a challenge in itself (I know ESPN+ is close to replacing ESPN3, and it seems like a way to encourage an extra subscription fee), so navigating international rights adds a further wrinkle---just figured @Canada would be less complex from a broadcasting perspective than, say, @Honduras.
  14. I like listening to Levine on the Score. Their Saturday/Sunday baseball coverage tends to be pretty darn good. I'm encouraged to see this. I don't think a shortened spring should matter much at all, though I suppose the irregularities introduced by pandemic scheduling are still a concern in terms of player health. That's really the thing that has me most worried about the Brewers. The offense is bad, okay, it's frustrating, but the team is built around those 6 starters and top-end BP guys. Pitching injuries are the big risk with that strategy. Would certainly look forward to a lot of transactions once a deal is reached.
  15. I'll be watching on Telemundo this afternoon. The TV situation for road games in qualifying never fails to amaze me, especially for all the growth in US soccer culture and fan interest over the last 20 years.
  16. I heard that too. Sounds right. I'm getting greedy. In theory, Canada should be the easiest road game in terms of venue and pitch quality. It doesn't have the intensity of Azteca or the just awful field conditions of a lot of CONCACAF. Obviously Canada is talented, but you'd have to feel really good about things with a road win. I just don't feel great about that last window. @Mexico is always very, very difficult, and Panama and Costa Rica will both likely be playing for their World Cup lives. Need a little cushion there.
  17. Thought we might get some help from Jamaica, but oh well. Maybe Costa Rica can come through at home.
  18. I thought Hoiberg was an easy, home run hire for Nebraska, but wow. It's ugly in Lincoln. I honestly might put the O/U on B1G wins for them at 0.5. They got rid of Tim Miles to take the jump, and I bet they'd kill to be where Miles had them. I'm rooting for Hoiberg to get it together, but lots of progress reversed down there so far.... As for the Badgers, ho hum. Gotta take care of the Gophs on Sunday.
  19. Need 3 tonight. This feels like the key window to me. Get 7 pts, you feel like you're there. 5 or 6 still okay. Anything less, I'm nervous.
  20. I forgot about the three games rule. In the tourney, you cannot play anywhere you've played more than three games. Nova is only playing just two at one of the big Philly venues so they're eligible to play there come tourney time. My fault. Would love to see UW and MU both get protected seeds, though!
  21. Tough schedule coming up, but Marquette looks really good for a decent seed. Could they get really hot and end up a 4? Probably not, but if they can, it would be fun to have both UW and Marquette scheduled at Fiserv. What a great day for Wisconsin hoops that would be. Long shot, but might as well dream while both programs are having quality seasons.
  22. Big opportunity to validate that Nova win this afternoon. I'd take Marquette plus the 2.
  23. Tomorrow will tell us a lot about where we are. Does the players' offer move the needle at all? I am weirdly optimistic about things getting done before too much of a delay to ST. I just think these sides aren't materially that far apart, despite the enmity between them. Of course, that lack of trust may matter more than the material facts, so we'll see.
  24. Is now a good time to mention he's never missed?
  25. Would rather have an incomplete than a sack...
