    I am glad we didn't include Brinson in this deal. Anyone else though, given this return, I would have pulled the trigger. I suspect Beane valued the ceilings of these guys higher than the guys DS was willing to part with. Absolutely happy we didn't make a trade. Stick to the plan.

    I'm still thinking the only thing we might do is something with the Tigers for Verlander and Kinsler. If we made that move, I could also see us trying to get involved with Baltimore for Britton and then the Mets for Granderson. Stearns has had some success dealing with Baltimore, which may help. Obviously we've struggled working with the Mets though. Those latter 2 moves would only happen if we get a significant rotation upgrade, otherwise they are kinda pointless.

    As a small market team you're not going to beat the big market teams by doing what they do and trading away the farm every trade deadline when you're in the race. We've tried that already and that lead to a limited window of competitiveness and sent us into this mess that required a rebuild. Those were the only 2 playoff appearances since 1982. It took Melvin being aggressive to get even that done. Being passive doesn't work and won't work. Since the All Star game, not only have the Cubs secured the division for 2017 by being aggressive, but have eliminated the Brewers' chances for 2018 and 2019 as well. If picking up Wilson or Quintana wasn't working a year from now, just deal them and get most of what you paid to get them back just as they did with Greinke. Just to be clear, the cubs have NOT secured the division. Not by a long shot. Even if the Brewers don't get back in serious contention, the Pirates are playing very well in the 2nd half and you can never count out those pesky Cardinals. This isn't like the nationals or dodgers where they have a 15 game lead and it would take a miracle for them to lose. 3 other teams are within 5 games. If the cubs have one bad week, at least one of those 3 teams gets close in the standings. Don't be overly shocked if Lester and/or Arrieta run out of gas down the stretch either based on their workload last year, which would be fairly devestating to their chances in the playoffs.

    This, 1000 times over. Except in reality this is probably their last run at a world series. Arrieta is gone after the year, lester and Quintana are already declining, the offense will still be there but they don't have the pitching to contend next year. And so many of their guys start getting expensive next year.

    I saw the same. For candelario and a lesser prospect. I'm extremely surprised that Detroit didn't get a better package. Candelario seems like a highly overrated prospect due to being in a big market. He took a step back this year in aaa and I don't think he'll be a strong defender at 3rd. He comes off as 2nd division regular to me. Boo the cubs

    I think hand stays put, Wilson to the cubs, dsrvish to the Astros, gray to the Yankees, Lynn or cashner to the cubs. I feel like the cubs are comfortable rolling Quintana/ arrieta/lester as their playoff rotation. Cashner or Lynn should transition well to a pen roll with their hard stuff. I think if the brewers make a trade, it's with Detroit for kinsler and either verlander or Zimmerman for minimal prospects... but I think that's unlikely. Aside from those you mentioned, I think the Dodgers get Britton.

    Sellers aren't going to be as turned off as you think by 2/3 of his first pro season of subpar production coming off knee surgery. The same swing, bat speed, tools, etc are still there. To say he's killed his trade value is a massive exaggeration and likely not true. That would be like saying brinson killed his trade value last year with his aa stat line and injury prior to the deal.

    You make a fair point that it's much easier for the Yankees to trade a prospect than the Brewers due to payroll. That said, their GM has proven very competent over the last couple seasons and they won't make such a silly overpay for that level of talent. I could see the trade happening, but Frazier and Torres won't be included. I hope I'm wrong, I can't stand the yankees, I hope they trade both...I just highly highly doubt it would happen.

    All I'm saying is..I'm too competitive to sit on my hands in the middle of a pennant race and wait for 3-4 years down the road to see if MAYBE my rebuilding plan works. That's why I am shocked DS is..You'd think GM's are super competitive too. Look, I'm not saying empty the farm necessarily but they need at least another bullpen arm and a starter. If they can get those two pieces..I really think they have a shot. Those two pieces SHOULD be fairly easy to get without giving up the farm I would think. If you can do it for quantity over quality, why wouldn't you?? The jury is still very much out on DS but if the Brewers personnel think Brinson is the next great Brewers player and the same scouts say Gray is a good but not great pitcher then you don't trade him. Agressivenes is irrelevant in this case. You don't give up more than you are getting in return. The Brewers are not a Gray away from matching the Cubs in talent so trading for him using elite prospects makes little sense. If they can get him for Ray and Nottingham great. If they need to add Phillips Im not sure and if they have to add Brinson that's a no unless they sweeten their offer. Bahahahahaha. This is no less silly than the guy who thinks he could bring winning baseball to Milwaukee if he was handed the GM keys. In what universe is the jury still out on him? What exactly has he done to this point that makes you so uncertain of him?

    Bahahahaha, get serious. Renting Alonso as a sweetener is still not enough to get Frazier. He's impact talent, just like brinson. You don't trade impact talent for solid contributors. You fundamentally can't grasp that though, time will tell.

    A 3.75 era for 2.5 seasons doesn't even approach the value of a 280 avg 25-30 hr cf playing great defense for 2.5 years, much less 6. Also brinson has played only a handful of games so far and the starts were sporadic. He also has hit 2 bombs in his last 3 games. Also, plenty of guy take time to adjust to mlb pitching and end up being stars. Literally every aspect of your post is way way wrong.

    Said on twitter that they laid off Jim Bowden but that is exactly the type of thing he would've proposed while he was still with ESPN. Lol. That's almost as bad as the time some media figure proposed ike davis for Braun straight up. I feel like everything a national sportswriter proposes greatly benefits a major market club and makes 0 sense for the small market club.

    It certainly doesn't happen often, but this time I agree with you. Hader has the upside to be in a conversation with those guys. Ortiz best case scenario might get close to them. The other 2 project solidly to mid rotation guys while harvey/matz are front lime at their best and degrom/syndergaard are top 15 in the league hands down. That isn't an argument to throw them away for gray, just my thoughts on those guys.

    Why go after either of these guys? I see a slight upgrade at the absolute most with either player, a majority of any value we would get would be veteran presence for our younger guys. We also lose roster versatility sticking a veteran on the 25 man. I can't think of any good reason we should be considering adding a veteran outfielder at this point.

    Anything mlb.com posts should come with an asterisk noting that they highly favor big market prospects versus small market prospects. Ortiz would probably be in the 40s if he was in the cubs organization, and 30s if in the dodgers.

    If we did sell, I don't see us trading any position players. It's a buyers market, rentals like JD Martinez can be had for super cheap. I suspect we could get something for Hughes and maybe Torres, but not much. Knebel would get a pretty big haul but I doubt we trade him. Garza could get more than Guerra at this point I would think, but neither are getting much. Santana has massive value but no way would we get it right now with so many rentals available, could be an off season move but I see him sticking around. I personally hope we pretty much stand pat, maybe ship off garza if possible, and see if our guys can claw back into contention. At the very least make the last couple months interesting.

    Both guys combined aren't worth their number 1 pick Michael Chavis(#3) and Mike Shawaryn(#8) could be possible, but still doubt it. The Red Sox just got Nunez from the Giants. He will likely fill the Perez role and play 3rd everyday if Devers proves to not be ready. That said, I could see the Red Sox looking at someone like Garza for the stretch run but we won't get much for him.

    Last I checked, the major league level doesn't consist of only guys drafted in the top 5 or even the first round. There are so many star caliber players that come in the later rounds. Michael Brantley and Lorenzo Cain are 2 that came through our system not that long ago that I can list off-hand. Mike Trout was a late 1st round pick and passed up by at least 20 teams. What I would like and I suspect a lot of other posters want to see is the Brewers operate like the Cardinals/Packers in that they develop their own players and compete consistently. Trading prospects for established players should happen but sparingly and carefully. If said prospect you trade away becomes a star, no matter what you received in trade you almost certainly lost. Bringing up and getting 6 years of a star player in this system of cost control is the ultimate value. If the brewers were to put Arcia or Santana on the market after this season, we would get some incredibly strong offers as those guys appear to be budding stars with a ton of cheap/team controlled years left.

    Um, what? You seriously think putting a value on an OF arm is silly? There's a ton of value in not letting every single base runner go 1st to 3rd on every single to left, and not letting every single base runner score from 2nd on a single to left. With Davis there are no variables, every single guy just goes. It without question should be factored into WAR as that significantly affects games.

    That absolutely could be true. If no move is made though, I'm curious what makes the start tomorrow. I doubt a new acquisition would be able to make it to DC to make the start so quickly if a trade happened tonight. Minor league options that line up best are Espino and Burnes. It's almost certainly Espino, but a guy can dream right?

    The Brewers have always been very good at keeping stuff like this under wraps, I'm not surprised we didn't hear about it until the move was announced. He could have strained it towards the end of his last outing, in a bullpen session, any numbers of things. Will be interesting to see what we do about a starting pitcher on Saturday...Suter and Guerra could go Tomorrow and Friday on regular rest due to the off day.

    I agree, I highly doubt it's a simple swap of those guys. I could see the Brewers wanting more outfield depth and a 13th position player and sending Blazek back to AAA(I don't know his option situation), but we also need to clear a spot for Swarzak and then you'd be talking about Peralta/Drake/Torres most likely. I still think the most likely scenario is a trade of sorts.
