  1. You're probably right, but for what I feel is the wrong reason...at least that last part. Keeping a player in a role because he's "earned it" is old school and poor management. It's like paying for the 32 year old that was a star...but you know the decline is coming. Williams will probably get the closer job(probably after one or two low leverage situations to get his feet under him), if he looks sharp, because Williams at his best is one of the best relievers in baseball for a multi-year stretch AND because he has a lot of experience in the role. If Williams is not 90% or more of what he was at peak...he won't(or shouldn't) get put back in the closer role. If he comes out with low velocity, bad command, poor movement on the changeup, or any other performance inhibitor...he shouldn't just automatically get flung into the closers role.
  2. As for the spirit of the original post, this season so far is head and shoulders above my expectations. Every injury is an opportunity for another player, and a lot of players from the system stepped up in a big way. It's really helping that some of the young position players broke out in a big way, it hides a lot of our issues when the offense can get a lead and a loaded bullpen can hold it for 4-5 innings quite often.
  3. y'all are WAY too concerned about service time. I swear bf.net cares more about service time than Matt Arnold.
  4. Couldn't agree more, but I'm not about to miss an opportunity to dunk on bad takes from cubs fans.
  5. Cubs fans are complaining that Counsell keeps running out the same lineup and the cubs aren't winning. What exactly do they expect him to do? Draw names out of a hat for the lineup and hope it works out? He's probably getting about as much as he can out of that roster. The roster was never that good to begin with.
  6. Literally every time a player or manager gets tossed, just make a blanket assumption that an umpire screwed up, got called on it, and the extremely fragile egos of the umpires led to an ejection. It is literally always precisely that simple...
  7. This trade really does feel like Jordan Lyles/Drew Pomeranz moreso than Daniel Norris. Civale should actually be good, I've been trying to figure out why he's not good for Tampa and have a couple theories. The biggest thing that jumps out at me is his GB rate is down around 10 percent from low 40s to low 30s. I also noticed until 2023 he pretty exclusively threw his cutter outside against RH hitters and jamming LH hitters and used his sinker the opposite...effectively trying to tunnel the two pitches and have them break the opposite way. Starting a bit in 2023 but significantly in 2024 he's using those pitches much differently according to heat maps...and those differences are certainly leading to a lot more balls in the air. It also probably doesn't help that the reddest spot on his heat map for sweeper usage is middle middle...so maybe that should be the Brewers first focus. I believe there's a lot the Brewers can do to help Civale achieve better results than he has with Tampa. Edit - I should add that it's certainly possible his command within the zone is poor this year...leading to his cutter/sinker combo showing differently on heat maps(rather than an intentionally different approach). That would also explain all the middle middle sweepers.
  8. It's a bit wild looking at how good Civale was with the Indians, and how bad with Tampa. It's almost like Tampa broke him, or maybe they just didn't align on how to attack hitters or something. I have high hopes he'll be more of the 3.75ish ERA pitcher he was for Cleveland than the 5+ ERA guy he's been for Tampa.
  9. That paydown by the Mets really changes the dynamic a lot and makes this downright feasible. Scherzer has a no trade clause, but I think if we learned anything last year...he will absolutely waive it for a chance to win. But the no trade clause somewhat allows him to approve his landing spot, he could force his way to the Dodgers if he wants...who certainly would want him. It's a bit tough to see the Brewers coming in first in a race for this guy, but would certainly like to at least try to get him.
  10. I hope Bauers starting is less platoon related and moreso recent performance related. Also, I wonder how much this is the start of Yelich getting a lot more time at DH. He's not only a worse defender than any of the 3 starting today, but having him DH saves his legs for the basepaths and acts to keep his body fresh. It's way way too logical of a move given current roster construction to have him DH over half the time until something changes. The lefty stack 5-7 I find to be good strategy right now, but will annoy me if it's still happening in a month. Clearly we intend to pinch hit Perkins/Hoskins for Mitchell/Bauers as soon as a lefty reliever is inevitably summoned for them. I don't mind doing that for Mitchell now as a way to limit innings immediately off injury, it also helps to leverage the entire roster to get the best possible matchups. Mitchell, once he gets his feet under him and falls into a routine of hopefully health/production, needs to be facing both handed pitching to improve as a player and not become a platoon bat by design.
  11. I'm glad so many others are beating this drum. There's an argument to be made for a very specific circumstance in October, but not in June. None whatsoever. Also, I think going forward, we should assume literally every single time a player or manager is ejected is caused by an ump screwing up and said player/manager pointing out their glaring mistake. I mean, how dare the manager/player want the calls to be correct...setting the bar waaaayyyyy too high.
  12. On a lighter note, I never really thought Keuchel was good...even when he was good. Fans should simply view this as an 8th starter that we need to press into actions due to injuries. If Hook somehow fixes Keuchel and he ends up being good even for a short strech, would it be fair for other teams to accuse us of voodoo magic?
  13. In fairness, rich and attractive people have a lot more temptation/opportunity than Joe Schmo blue collar worker. Plenty of blue collar people might have the moral fallibility to cheat...but don't have an opportunity that's worth their while.
  14. Unless his agent is a minor...or he went all Trevor Bauers on him/her, I fail to see how this is even remotely relevant. Stop trying to find ways to be offended, it's a baseball game.
  15. Cease has had his way with this roster historically to this point. Hopefully we make good adjustments, and/or Rea is able to hang with him today.
  16. He's probably their best performing top prospect, but he's gonna be limited on innings this year, next year, and probably for a degree the year after that. This year he's maxed out at 5 innings in an outing and it's doubtful he throws 100 innings this year. And there's certainly a very reasonable path to them contending and buying, but it's far from the certainty you'd assume in 5 minutes in the cubs forums. It might be 50/50. I hope they do honestly because it will make them worse long term and not good enough short term.
  17. Fair enough, forgive me for assuming they'd try to fill the significant number of holes in their roster with their prospects if they were actually any good
  18. It's honestly gotta suck(for Counsell) to go from the team that deals with SP injuries by bringing up prospects(gasser/rodriguez) to the team that reinserts the beyond washed up Hendricks into the rotation. But that begs the question of how they intend to trade for guys like crochet and Robert with a mediocre farm in a very sellers market currently. I guess if they NEED to finish 2 games over 500 and 5 back from the wildcard...they should add at the deadline
  19. I just spent a lot of time getting dumber on the cubs forums. The biggest takeaway is that they all seem to think the cubs are going to be buyers at the deadline. What am I missing? They are ahead of 3 teams in the entire NL...
  20. He sat 3 days in a row against LHP after being 6 for his last 13 prior to the rest.
  21. Every team in baseball has had a bad 3 game stretch by now. We also faced the Phillies top 3 pitchers that are all in great form right now, and lost 3 games by 5 runs. We had our chances and with one or two more key hits could have won all 3 games considering how close they all were. Moving forward, the young offensive players need to continue to improve(STOP PLATOONING TURANG!!!). Would be massive if things started clicking for Chourio down the stretch and he started to become an offensive force. And maintain the lead heading into the deadline so Arnold can hopefully make a prudent move to add an arm to the rotation. We also will in theory get Devin Williams back in a month or so, which would improve the bullpen even further if all goes well.
  22. I take issue with this. I disliked Counsell more than most. He seemed to me like an above average regular season manager and a poor postseason manager. His greatest strength, in my opinion, was bullpen usage. Not specific day to day, but managing them with proper rest so they'd last the whole season. He is the anti-Joe Maddon. You can certainly nitpick certain day to day bullpen decisions, but I almost always gave him the benefit of the doubt on them because I knew his priority was clearly longevity and you can't always throw out your top guys if you want them to last the entire season. Now, continue your regularly scheduled program on boo-ing Counsell and laughing at his current failures...
  23. Well, ignoring some misses doesn't really change that the Brewers over the last 20 years have won a heck of a lot more trades than they've lost. It's frankly not even close, I never intended to imply he's being selective and the Brewers actually suck at trading. But we did miss some. I just wanted to point out that how he set up his criteria, of only selecting players on the current roster and how they were acquired, ignores instances like the Olson/Norris trade. You can also add in David Fry. Someone else brought up adames/rasmussen. If adames was trash, he'd be gone by now....and that trade wouldn't be listed above. If Adames is what he is currently, but rasmussen was a cy young, that trade would probably grade a C or so. I also specifically said I wasn't trying to take too much away from what he pulled together. It acted as a "how we constructed our roster and how good those trades were". It was a simply observation.
  24. With the yelich trade, you also have to ignore the extension in my opinion. The contract he was under we got crazy crazy value. The extension and subsequent injury and poor performance weren't really related to the trade
  25. Your criteria ignores some of the biggest misses, such as trading Reese Olson for Daniel Norris. I don't want to take too much from what you've pulled together, I just don't think it's fair to say their misses are few and minor as your criteria doesn't really touch on the misses. Any bad trades wouldn't involve a player on the roster, so the criteria is structurally designed to ignore the bad ones.
