  1. What do we all think Casey McGehee thinks about Borass's stance on early negotiations?
  2. To my best recollection, Maldy and Fiers didn't have the track record of success coming up that Davis and Scooter had.
  3. Move Braun back to third. Solved.
  4. Knowing Melvin, making a run at Scott Kazmir for WAY too many years just makes too much sense.
  5. I agree with most of the analysis but I guess I'd like to see the long list of teams that finished the regular season 23-9 in their last 32 (needing every last one of them), beat a team in a 5 games series who had unquestionably the best starting staff in baseball that year, and went on through the rest of the post season winning the World Series. Maybe not the greatest 32+ game stretch of all time but probably historically good at a minimum (superficial as it may be).
  6. The Brewers had no legitimate aces in 2011 and were 2 games from the World Series. I definitely get the point you're making here, but I feel like a more accurate way to describe that run would fit right into the point fondy was trying to make -- the Brewers won one playoff series against a team that also lacked 'legit ace' SP talent, and then lost 4 of 6 games in the next round. To a historically hot team, but also a team that lacked a true ace and went on to win the World Series.
  7. The Brewers had no legitimate aces in 2011 and were 2 games from the World Series.
  8. As long as Schafer isn't his replacement option, I'm OK any way they want to go with Nori. I'm just not a fan of a guy who only has his glove to offer as one of our corner outfielders. Not unless we're running King Felix out there every day.
  9. I just don't get why they continue to toy with this idea that somehow, Rogers is starting material and can be a 200IP guy. Let me point out the obvious: he's just not durable enough or one of those genetic freaks that just keeps taking it every 5th day. For heaven's sake, do the guy a favor. Stick him in the pen and let him be a solid, if not spectacular, 3 pitch 7th inning guy or setup man. There's no shame in that as we've seen some epically bad bullpens over the years.
  10. I was only playing devil's advocate in pointing out mediocre FA's as a win over a 2nd rounder historically. With that said, in this market, I feel like dipping into free agency for anything outside the bargain bin should only be considered when we have a solid base built up at the farm level. Even then, if it isn't a move to put us over the top, I'd much rather gamble and go upside/projectability with the pick than pay way too much for a good year or two on a 3+ contract.
  11. Wrong. None of those guys were good enough to draw a QO from their previous team. I'm not in favor of losing picks over free agents as that's no way to build the foundation others have described in detail. With that said, I'm not sure what the "hit" rate is in the 2nd round but I'd bet that it isn't above 50%. That being the case and also considering many of those that do hit are fringe starters and backups, a "mediocre" FA is a win for that pick historically.
  12. Guys, if Mark Kotsay can play CF in a playoff game for this organization, I'm pretty sure anything or anybody that is a small step up from an inanimate carbon rod could play there full time as long as this regime is in charge.
  13. TheCrew, I'm curious as to what your take is on Roach. Are we looking at a Nelson Cruz type talent or is he a guy whose swing will really get exposed at the higher levels? Seems like a dead red guy at the plate who struggles with off-speed offerings.
  14. And it's this point right here that gives me pause. Notice there are no pitchers in that group. Now, I realize there are variables that go into it but clearly it's much easier to "hit" on a position player at the top of the draft. With the Crew absolutely needing to hit next year, there is no reason to go into that draft dead set on drafting pitching as we need impact players regardless of position. In any event, Bruce Seid running the show has me nervous that this may go bad.
  15. You make a number of great points, particulary the point about BF.Net'ers loving to create trade markets for our players that most likely don't exist. That's been going on for years with no end in site. It's like every rumor out there is to be taken as absolute truth. Where I can't agree with you is where you defend Melvin, in my opinion, a bit too much. Bruce Seid lies at DM's feet, as does the entire scouting and player development system. Go to one Timber Rattler game and talk with a scout from another team. They will absolutely hammer, and I mean hammer, the non-sensical approach and tinkering we subject our prospects to (i.e. piggybacking pitchers, Coulter position issue, Lopez/Arnett mechanics, etc.). The bashing gets to the point where the light goes on and you get the picture that most MLB scouts regard our development folks are an absolute joke. I've heard scouts say "I'd love to have X player" and "I'd love to have Y player", while citing how they think those players are high ceiling talent. They follow that up with "but the Brewers will screw with him so bad, by the time they're done with him he won't have a chance." Kind of makes you rethink your outlook on the entire organization. I know it did for me.
  16. So this begs the question, what is the Lohse signing preventing the Brewers from doing in your mind that is holding them back? Keep in mind that you can't bang on Melvin's free agent acquisitions and then say his salary is preventing them from making moves this offseason. They also managed to get a pitcher who I've been told they likely would have taken with their pick in the 1st round, so tough to argue the draft angle. I get people wanting instant gratification and something new to hold onto, but as long as he continues to pitch well he's an asset.
  17. Where did you get .750 from? It is every bit as assumptive that Schafer is a .750 guy as it is Gomez not being a .900 guy. While I tend to side with you on Gomez not being .900, I think you'd find a short list of baseball folks that think Schafer is anything more than .700. To me, his absolute ceiling is Aoki's performance this year, which isn't at the .750 you seem to think he can be.
  18. Both teams got draft picks for their respective starters. I would've have taken that for Lohse, probably not for Gallardo but definitely for Lohse. No, oh goodness no. Most certainly not with Bruce Seid calling the shots.
  19. While I agree that trading Gomez would be the most prudent move long term, let's get real here. It really depends on what your definition of "capably fill in" is. If Schafer was someone we traded for and wasn't drafted and developed by the Brewers, people on here most likely would have been dismissing this guy for years and questioning his spot on the 40 man. The realist in anyone knows he's probably at best a 5th and maybe a 4th outfielder on a good team. Good glove, little bit of speed, sure. Problem is, the simple eye test tells me he's a sub .700 OPS guy at this level. Schafer through a rebuild is fine, anything beyond that and he's the weak link on your roster.
  20. Rough series for the snakes. TheCrew07, what is your take on Wagner? I've seen it mentioned he touches 95, 96. Is the fastball too straight and are the secondary offerings a work in progress? Is there room to fill out a bit more? It seem like a lefty with that kind of velocity would be more highly thought of.
  21. The guy got under my skin on a number of occasions, most notably not knowing the score on a game winning hit back in 2011. One thing I have to admit though, is all in all the guy is extremely likeable, goofball or not. I'd love to see him come back at some point and take over in a role similar to Augie or Davey's. He sure can't do any worse as they basically add nothing and would actually give reason to stay tuned after games.
  22. Who's to say he's "movable" this year. None of us are sitting in DM's chair. It's all about negotiating and driving up the price rather than looking desperate. It really depends on the return. I don't get the mentality some here seem to have of settling for less just to move somebody.
  23. Anyone know if the Carolina league is a hitter or pitcher friendly league? I'm guessing it leans slightly to pitching.
  24. The funny thing is, who's to say they wouldn't have drafted Devin Williams at #19 anyway? Per the draft special on FSN, it was pretty clear they valued him that high. I guess we'll have to monitor picks in that general area in the long run to see what we "missed out" on.
