  1. I don’t know if it’s a factor for Murphy or not, but the Brewers have to be sensitive to the “integrity of the game” aspect of playing a team in a division race. They could also be trying to pin down the number 1 seed. I expect to see some rolling off days over the next few days, but not wholesale use of bench players until this weekend.
  2. I would bet that any Tiger fan who posted on a message board on September 10 that the division race wasn't over yet would have been greeted with comments to the effect that they don't understand math and probability. They would also have been told how difficult it would be for a team to make up 9 games with 16 to play, even with 6 head to head games against the team they are chasing.. After all, all the Tigers would have to do is play .500 the rest of the way and it would be impossible for the Guardians to catch them. The Tiger fan might have responded by pointing out the improbable charge that the Tigers made to overtake the Twins for a wild card spot last season as a reminder of how quickly things can change. Of course, since September 10, the Guardians have gone 10-1, including the 3 game sweep over the Tigers, and the Tigers have gone 1-6 in the games against teams other than the Guardians. Some times "just playing .500" doesn't happen, even for teams that are 22 games over .500 and have the best record in their league. And some times teams that are barely over .500 suddenly put together winning streaks that would be considered nearly impossible by someone looking at projections and probabilities.. Like the 2021 Cardinals who won 17 in a row as part of a 19-3 finish that lifted them to a wild card berth.
  3. If you haven’t seen it you’ll have to look up the catch made by the Nats CF. He pulled a ball off the top,of the fence, but it popped out of his glove as he came down. He then kicked it up like a hacky sack and completed the catch. He also made a more traditional HR robbing catch of a potential tying shot in the ninth.
  4. It’s also miserable when your team pulls one of the greatest choke jobs of the year.
  5. The first games of the NLDS aren’t until Saturday 10/4. I wouldn’t think they’d want any of the pitchers to go too long without throwing a few innings. Plus, they will need the starters to cover a few innings to keep the relievers from throwing too many. The final game on Sunday might feature 9 pitchers throwing an inning each.
  6. The Reds are suddenly in a plum position for the last wild card spot. They’re one game behind the Mets and one game ahead of the DBacks and hold the tiebreaker over both. Plu,s, after playing the Cubs tomorrow they have a home series against the Pirates before coming to Milwaukee for the final weekend. The Mets have road series next week against the Cubs and Marlins while the DBacks finish with the Dodgers and Padres, who are still fighting for the division title.
  7. Just saw that Dodgers catcher Will Smith, who has been out with what they thought was a bone bruise on his hand has now been diagnosed with a hairline fracture and may be out for at least the start of the playoffs. Hopefully Contreras won’t follow that path.
  8. Wouldn’t it be ironic, and a little annoying, if in one of their best seasons the Brewers lost the season series to both the Cubs and Cardinals.
  9. You think all I do on this board is “ride Murphy (sic) jock”? You must have me confused with someone else.
  10. No reason to expect it. There is no reason to think Monasterio would produce significantly more than Ortiz if you look objectively at his career numbers and what he has done in all games as a starter this year. But I know we can look forward to you making the same comment every day.
  11. Hopefully the Brewers can find a way to solve the mystery of Miles The Magician Mikolas. Other teams seem to be able to do it.
  12. Tigers lose a ninth inning lead and Guardians win first of a DH over the Twins. Guardians have gained 9 1/2 games on the Tigers in two weeks by going 13-4. Only 3 of the games they gained were from head to head wins.
  13. A playoff roster should have more reliable arms that can fill that role. We don’t know who will be healthy and available, but any of the spot starters should be able to do that.
  14. I really don’t see any role for Misioroski on a playoff roster. I can’t think of a situation where you could trust him.
  15. On the subject of teams making up a lot of ground in a short time, who has noticed the Guardians, who trailed the Tigers by 11 games on September 4, winning 9 out of 10 to pick up 4.5 games. Then following that up with a 3 game sweep over the Tigers to cut the lead to 3.5 games. They still have another series with the Tigers next week.
  16. Announcers do,say things like that, but it’s worth noting that the Brewers are 15-0 since August 1 against the only teams they have played that were not in playoff contention when the Brewers played them. So, the Phillies going 6-0 in those home games is not hard to imagine if they are going all out to win. The Brewers will probably have to win some games, maybe as many as 4 or 5, to knock off the 6 games still left in the magic number to top the Phillies.
  17. They roughed him up pretty good in June and last Saturday he gave up 2 runs in only 5 innings.
  18. An unexpected bonus game tonight as a friend was in town and we went to the game. Now 10-2.
  19. Hopefully the Reds will win today to keep their fading playoff hopes alive. Maybe they can give the Cubs a fight in their four game series.
  20. I think some people have trouble making the distinction between being “fearful” of something happening and recognizing the possibility that something might happen, even if that possibility is very small
