For the record I will be applauding Adames when he is introduced as we put our 9-0 season record on the line tomorrow night. Then I hope to be cheering more loudly when he strikes out. Hopefully he won’t pull an Orlando Arcia on us.

The Brewers need to get the offense going again to take some pressure off the pitchers. In the last 7 games of the road trip they only scored 27 runs, and 4 of those were in extra innings and aided by the free runners, and 4 came at the expense of the sacrificial lamb Counsell’ put out on Monday to save his bullpen. Of those runs, only 12 were scored in the first 7 innings of the game. It puts a lot of,pressure on the pitchers if they feel like they have to be near perfect to give the team a chance to win.

Every stat about the Giants has to be considered in the context of their home park which has to be close to the most pitcher friendly in MLB. The Brewers get something of a bad break having to face both Webb and Ray in this series. And because they are facing the Brewers they will both probably miss the Cubs series.

They gained a game in 5 games and lost the opportunity to pick up any more ground without getting help.

Now Quintana gets to bookend this series by being asked to go at least 6 again tomorrow to protect the bullpen.

Then don’t read it. If you’re looking for great insights you’re not going to get them on game threads. I don’t find it insightful when half a dozen people post “BRICE” when he hits a HR. To me these threads are for saying the kinds of things you might hear sitting at a bar watching a game.

Now, here’s the key question? Did the Brewers DESERVE to win today? Does that program take into account how many free runners a team hands out? When Uribe came out after getting out of the 8th inning imagined Murphy imitating Lou Brown when Willie Mays Hayes made his basket catch: ”Way to get out of it. Don’t ever f****g do that again”.

I posted in the Monday game thread how I expected to feel with the possible results. Today’s win is the difference between “OK” and “concerned.”. Those 2 extra games of cushion look awfully big. Now on to the next stage of the 18 day march.

How many innings in high leverage situations like Sunday? But he did the job today and now the baton passes. The Brewers, even with their generally good pitching, are just 1-14 this year when scoring exactly 2 runs. It usually takes more than 2 to win and I expect it will today too. 6 runs in the last 24 innings. That isn’t all just bad luck.

Asking for 4 shutout innings from the bullpen is really a lot when one has to come from Anderson in a high leverage situation.

Seventh straight game of weak hitting. Need 4 clean innings from the bullpen to pull this,out. That may be asking too much.

I see Tucker is back in the lineup today. After clearing his head for a few days he would be my “pick to click”. It appears that the wind today will be out of the northeast, which would be across the outfield from left to right. A help on balls hit to RF. Advantage Cubs and their LH power hitters. Even more imperative than usual for Priester to induce grounders.

On the subject of the 2024 Twins I came across this item that adds to my skepticism about the significance (if not the validity) of Deserved Wins. Unlucky 2024 Twins IMHO, measures like this and xBA that look at exit velocity and launch angle but ignore where a ball is hit relative to defensive positioning are seriously flawed. But, if they provide an excuse and consolation for some fans when their team loses I guess they have some value

Maybe we should ask Brock for his comments about how comfortable a team should feel with a 5 game lead over another team on August 21. A Twins fan would have an interesting perspective on that. At the time they may have been more focused on the division race and not so much the wild card race bubbling behind them. But they provided the most recent example of how much can happen in 5 weeks and how having one of the best records in MLB for a few months after a bad start does not preclude a rough finish.

I understand that. But if people don’t understand that the reaction to losing 3 straight games to the hated rival that is chasing your team for a division title is going to be stronger than losing 3 straight to almost any other team, especially another decent team, that’s too bad.

I can’t buy the idea that the Cubs are “who you want to lose to”. That’s like telling an Ohio State football fan that Michigan is the kind of team you want to lose to.

Yes, the Cubs have a good pitching staff. As will teams in the playoffs. The runs aren’t going to come as easily against playoff teams as they do against the bullpens of teams like the Pirates and Nationals. I think the whiners are the people who make excuses for losses by complaining about umpiring, and citing things like exit velocity and “deserve to win” measures only when the team loses. It’s baseball. Not “let’s see who can hit the ball the hardest right at the defense”. This team will be tested in the weeks ahead by how they respond when not everything is going their way.

Yes, close LOW SCORING games which gets back to my point earlier about concerns about the hitting. Going back to Saturday, and not counting runs scored in extra innings that are aided by the free runner, and the Brewers have scored 2, 2, 7, 4, 1, and 3. That looks like a slump for a team that is near the top of the league in scoring. If the hitters can’t turn things around soon it’s going to be trouble, especially against better teams. I share the comments some have made raising the concern that this might be a preview of the Brewers playoff offense.

But we’re talking about run differential, and my point is that those 4 runs are the main reason the Brewers have outscored the Cubs in the series.

And should have cost them the first game in Cincinnati.
