  1. It does if the Brewers are on the fence about whether to add him to the 40-man at year's end. If they have already made a decision on him, I concur.
  2. Biggest competitor is probably Juan Baez, with La Torre and Tejada probably having too few at bats. Yorman Galindez and the slightly higher dollar Wande Torres ($38,700) have posted some eye-popping strikeout totals as well.
  3. I believe someone said it in a different thread, but outside of the top 10-12 there really was zero consensus. It felt like there had to be a lot of guys who nearly made the list, everyone from a pop up prospect who just keeps hitting (Devanney) to a guy currently on pace to set a record for OPS in at least this iteration of the Brewers’ DSL squad (Lara). One thing I miss in this new format is not seeing the also-ran votes.
  4. Whenever I try to get enthused about Briceno, I just get perplexed as to why the Brewers didn’t bring him over to Arizona to start the season. His stats were pretty good last year, too. Then again, this year has shown the Brewers regard spending time in the ACL as optional.
  5. I guess it depends on how much longer Jackson is going to be out. If it is going to be awhile and they are confident enough in his glove to give him the short side of the catching platoon, I’d say move him up and get him some DH at bats.
  6. Given the news that Robinson is Biloxi-bound, I wonder if that stellar effort was Michele Vassalotti’s farewell appearance at Carolina as well. He deserves it.
  7. It is impressive what Cruz is doing given he didn't pitch stateside at all last season. Heck, even Jimenez and Segura being able to be serviceable after starting last year in the DSL is pretty impressive.
  8. Among random statistical quirks, Jhonnys Cabrera appears to be attempting to become the first 2TO player. I believe he now has 18 plate appearances with seven walks and six strikeouts, both besting all other outcomes combined. Correction: 20 plate appearances, He's been hit by two pitches as well.
  9. I know the Midwest League isn't know for its early season offense, but outside of a couple early rough outings from Jarvis, 4/5 of Wisconsin's opening day rotation has performed outstanding there this year.
  10. That does suck about Jolon Zhao. Never know what might have been if the injuries didn't strike. It's going to be interesting to see if Puello can avoid the hard contact that was plaguing him earlier in the season now that he is in high-A. If results were any indication he seemed to have gotten better at limiting it in Carolina as the year went along. With the first halves done, really thought we'd see a few more promotions before Tuesday's games (Robinson/Vassalotti, Kelly or Jarvis, Black, etc.)
  11. Before I start my list, I like having this one pre-draft to give the pop-up guys some credit before they inevitably get pushed down the list by the early-round picks. I would advise not having another until after the draft signing deadline has passed to give more clarity on that front. Also, if Turang and Small have solid Julys, the first round pick will likely enter my list at No. 9, which feels like a real positive. I do wish that the next tier were a bit bigger, though. I've got 9-11 on their own, and then not much difference between the 12th and 31st (TJ Shook) prospects. 1. Jackson Chourio 2. Antoine Kelly 3. Joey Wiemer 4. Sal Frelick 5. Jeferson Quero 6. Tyler Black 7. Brice Turang 8. Ethan Small 9. Garrett Mitchell 10. Felix Valerio 11. Carlos Rodriguez (Pitcher) 12. Eduardo Garcia 13. Hedbert Perez 14. Stiven Cruz 15. Hendry Mendez 16. Abner Uribe 17. Luis Lara 18. Victor Castaneda 19. Brandon Knarr 20. Cam Devanney 21. Noah Campbell 22. Jakson Reetz 23. Tristan Peters 24. Cam Robinson 25. Mario Feliciano 26. Freddy Zamora 27. Jadher Areinamo 28. Joe Gray Jr. 29. Alexander Cornielle 30. Russell Smith Unsure if still eligible, but if so deserve a mention: Jason Alexander, Mark Mathias, Peter Strzelecki Others considered: Triple-A: Lucas Erceg, Justin Topa, Clayton Andrews Double-A: TJ Shook, Tristen Lutz, Zach Vennaro High-A: Justin Jarvis, Ernesto Martinez, Carlos Rodriguez (outfielder) and Darrien Miller Low-A: Jheremy Vargas, Israel Puello, Logan Henderson ACL: Daniel Guilarte, Luis Castillo, Jace Avina, Alexander Vallecillo DSL: Jhonny Severino, Johan Barrios, Wande Torres (What? He's a 6-3 lefty who is averaging more than a strikeout and a half per inning in his first few starts. I'm intrigued.)
  12. One of the biggest reasons probably is A-ball relievers tend not to get a lot of love unless they have Abner Uribe-level hype in part because in the past the Brewers tended to keep anyone (outside of older castoffs and indyball signings) who they thought had a chance at the majors in the rotation until Double-A, although that is changing. Also, Robinson has been in the system a long time and thus feels older than he actually is. Assuming he gets a midseason promotion, I'm looking forward to seeing how he fairs in Double-A.
  13. It all depends on the overall stateside limit, Other than Nashville and maybe Carolina I don’t know that they are at the roster limit anywhere. With the shorter draft, the Brewers signed 15 draft picks and 3 UDFA last season, and five or six didn’t play at all last year. Those who did play seemed to have their debuts pretty well staggered. With the promotions that would occur anyway, finding room for a dozen players shouldn’t be that tough from an individual roster perspective.
  14. I know Dahl had some measure of success if Colorado, but that was several years ago and he hasn't been overwhelming this season at Triple-A. Almonte has been better than him (as was Hiura in his short Triple-A stint). Given that they have similar platoon splits (neither hits lefties), I'd just stick with Hiura at this point.
  15. Was he ever really a third baseman, though? He was a second baseman/left fielder in college. I imagine the reason he played there is the same reason Gabe Holt saw a chunk of time at third last year as well: The Brewers have had, the last couple of years, a ton of guys whose best infield defensive position is second base and very few whose best infield defensive position is third base so guys were playing out of position to get them at bats.
  16. For those who have actually watched the Shuckers this year, is it just bad luck or is there a reason why Valerio's batting average seems lower than it should be given his strikeout rate and the pop he has displayed?
  17. The one walk was the key there for Small. If he can keep doing that he'll be just fine. Outside of the one home run, Kelly was pretty darned good too. Nice night for the system's two best pitching prospects.
  18. Outside of the other guys listed on MLB.com's top 200 (Jacob Misiorowski and Jake Madden) I can't find much about any of the JUCO arms, but given the Brewers have picked a fair number lately I wonder if they go Kenya Huggins in the fourth round or something like that.
  19. I know that he gave up a couple of runs, but otherwise that is the kind of stat line you like to see from Cornielle. If he can keep limiting the walks, he becomes another interesting piece in that rotation during the second half.

  21. I can take care of the ACL and DSL teams. The last two classes of Latin American signings should have fewer borderline guys.
  22. No problem. It almost takes two people with the eligibility rules just to double check each other. Gave me a new appreciation for the work Mass Haas and others have done compiling these lists over the years. I wish that Fangraphs page included Parra because this Baseball America article says that it depends on if the signing date is after the end of the season of the team they are assigned to the next year. Parra, from what I read, signed after the Brewers' team's season was done but before the DSL postseason was done, so who knows. Not that he is a threat to be picked in the major league phase, but it would be nice to not have to protect him in the AAA phase since there are probably going to be about 35 players on the Rule 5 list that they don't have room to protect there.
  23. There are a few missing. I'd done the Rule 5 eligible to see how much time it took before deciding if I wanted to volunteer to do every year. There are a lot, and ClosetBrewerFan caught a few that I missed. It is labor intensive because it relies on signing date instead of what year the contract starts and I couldn't find the exact wording of the rule anywhere (I believe Jesus Parra is either Rule 5 eligible by two days or doesn't need to be protected by about 10 depending on how they measure it). That is the plus side to moving the Latin American signing day to the offseason. The players have stopped accruing a Rule 5 season despite their contract not even starting until the following season. I think Andruw Monasterio, Corey Ray, Josh Lindblom, Reetz, Tyler Herb, Harold Chirino and Jose Sibrian would be added to the free agents and Jhonnys Cabrera, Branlyn Jaraba, Rafael Martinez, Mario Perez, Carlos Roa, Caleb Boushley, Luis Contreras, Luis Silva, Tyler Gillies, Robbie Baker, Christian Tripp, Junior Montero, Josh Shapiro, Reidy Mercado and Rafael Garcia to the Rule 5 list. I will admit I just guesstimated on a couple of the Latin American guys in the rule 5 section, so I am not 100% sure on them. It was taking a long time,
  24. I know he is hurt, but I'd put Uribe in the lock category . He is the exact sort of player who often gets picked. Locks (3): Turang, A. Kelly, Uribe Possibles (5): Valerio, Castaneda, Devanney, Lutz, C. Robinson Long shots (4): Jarvis, E. Garcia, Andrews (If healthy), Vennaro I'd put Matt Hardy in the possible category except I think if the Brewers think enough of him to protect him he's going to be given a big league shot before the season is over anyway and it will be a moot point. The Wisconsin outfielders could move up into the longshots category with strong second halves, but right now I'm not seeing it happen. I think Vennaro is Rule 5 eligible as well.
  25. So that is a doubleheader sweep with six combined home runs for the prospect quartet of Chourio, Garcia, Perez and Quero. That'll play. That'll play.
