  1. Yeah, it just seems that in the past few years the only bats that ever really put up numbers in the DSL for us were guys that were 20+ years in age. This year, we have a handful of 17-18 year old kids that are really putting up some solid numbers. I agree with you though - until they prove that they can do it stateside, probably not worth getting too excited about any of them yet.
  2. I don't follow the DSL team all that closely, and I know that good info on some of these prospects are sometimes hard to come by. But, it would appear that we might actually have 4-5 legit prospects down there that might be worth keeping an eye on. Do I have this correct? If so, what can anyone share about the following guys: Carmona, Familia, Avalo, Abreu and Adames? I'm somewhat familiar with Ernesto Martinez as he was the kid we signed late in the international signing period this past year, but I'm just curious if anyone has any scouting reports on some of these other intriguing prospects. Is it possible that we might actually have some kids worth following down there this year?
  3. What can anyone tell me about this Adames kid? Seems to be putting up some pretty good numbers so far this year. Anyone else we should be excited about on that DSL roster right now?
  4. So, unless if we swoop in here at the last minute and offer up a great package to Oakland - I'm assuming that we are pretty much out of the running now for Gray. Which I think I'm perfectly OK with. Just too many question marks with this guy, and because he really isn't a true ace - I don't think it is worth giving up a huge prospect package for him, especially since we've now pissed away our division lead.
  5. Do we know what the story is with Zimmerman? Did he lose a bunch of velocity? Command of his pitches? What's been his big issue with Detroit? I guess I'm wondering if there is any hope in getting this guy turned around, or is it just one big lost cause at this stage?
  6. Would the Tigers really be interested in trading Fulmer for a lesser prospect package if said team also took Zimmerman off their hands? I realize that's a horrible contract, but wouldn't they want to capitalize on Fulmer more in getting a stacked prospect haul in return? I know it isn't my money, but I'd be all for taking Zimmerman and that contract if you could also get Fulmer for a lesser prospect deal. Eat the money, and give them Diaz, Ponce and a lottery ticket prospect in return. I know that's not much of a package, but not sure if I'd give up much more if we are taking on Z's full salary.
  7. I agree with you. Something had to have been (or maybe still is) in the works last night. Why else do you send Brinson out there for one half inning (after a rain delay) only to pull him before the bottom of the 1st. If they were simply bringing him up for another right handed bat, they would have already known they were going to do that and wouldn't have done all of that. Likewise, wouldn't they have known about a pending DL stint for Garza (if this is truly a legit injury)? Unless if he literally slipped on a banana peel in the clubhouse after the game last night, it again wouldn't explain why they sent Brinson out there for 1/2 inning. Something is still a little fishy with all of this.
  8. This is what I' m thinking, as well. Also, I'm assuming the team is Detroit, since they are the one with advanced talks with DS. If I'm Detroit, I look hard at Villar. Villar would be better/cheaper fit for them than Kinsler. They probably want an advanced arm, as well. So.... my official guess: Detroit gets... Phillips Villar Advanced arm (Ortiz, Burnes, or F Peralta) Lower level high upside guy ( Gatewood or Harrison) Brewers get.... Verlander Kinsler, Cash Can't we just take on more of Verlander and Kinsler's salary and give up less in prospects? I know it's not my money, but I'd rather go that route than to give up a possible Villar/Phillips/Burnes/Gatewood package for two aging players. Maybe if they throw in Wilson on the deal - then I'd consider it.
  9. So, which prospects fell off the bottom of this list? Kirby, Reed, Lara, T. Williams are some that I'm pretty sure were on the previous list? Who am I missing though? By my count, I believe we have 8 new guys that were added, so I'm apparently missing 4 that must have fallen off. And, I too am really surprised that Gatewood isn't higher on this list? He's the one guy that has really put up good numbers in Carolina this year, in what really has been a bounce back type year for him. I know it's not a huge jump, but I probably would have slotted him at #15 and then just moved everyone back a spot.
  10. Is it too early for us to get excited about what Zack Brown has been doing recently for the T Rats? Another really solid outing for him today (still needs to cut down on the walks though), and that has been a trend for him over the past couple of months. Does he profile more to a late inning reliever, or is he a guy that has enough in his arsenal to potentially stay as a starter as he continues to move up the system? And, oh by the way - Hiura with 2 more hits today.
  11. I see that Bob Nightengale just threw out a package of Phillips, Woodruff and Burnes for Gray. Boy, I'd hate to part with both Woody and Burnes in the same deal for Gray. I could get behind giving up one of them, but both is a lot to part ways with. I think I'd rather go Phillips, Burnes, Dubon or Diaz. That would allow us to hold onto Brinson, Hader, Woodruff, Ray, Ortiz and one of Dubon/Diaz. I'd be good with that, but who knows if Oakland would be?
  12. Does a package of Keon Broxton/Freddy Peralta get a deal done with Toronto, or does that not even come close? If not, I'd probably take a hard pass on Happ as I really don't think he's worth giving up any of our top prospects. I don't know if they have a need in the OF right now, but Broxton could give them a controllable piece that has already had some MLB success. Then, we could go with a Brinson/Phillips platoon in CF the rest of the way. Not sure what either one of them would give us offensively, but I'd have to think that it wouldn't be too big of a dropoff from what we are getting with Broxton now.
  13. OK, here's a new proposal (feel free to rip it up): Broxton Davies Ray Diplan or Herrera On the surface, this doesn't feel like enough for the A's. But, they would be getting a young CF in Broxton who has at least shown that he can be a capable (if not streaky) MLB regular, along with Davies who proved last year that he can have success as a starting pitcher in the big leagues (and might fair better in that more spacious Oakland Coliseum). Both of these guys are controllable for many years to come too. Ray gives them a Top 100 prospect back in the deal (I know he's not living up to it this year though) that many scouts are still very high on, and Diplan or Herrera gives them a high upside young arm. Any chance this deal excites the A's, or would they laugh this off? Would we have to swap in an Ortiz for Diplan/Herrera to get a deal done in this type of a package for Gray?
  14. And for the record - I really haven't seen Fulmer pitch much. So, is this a guy that would be worth giving up a haul of prospects for? He seems to have had good success in his first two years in the big leagues, but I'm not very knowledgeable on his stuff. Curious to know if people think he would be worth a big prospect package?
  15. I know the Tigers insist that he isn't available, but I'm sure they'd be open to discussions at the right price. So, what type of prospect haul would we have to give back to them to even entertain a deal for Fulmer? And is that package worth it? You'd have him under control for 6 years after 2017, right? How about: Brinson Burnes Dubon Herrera Does that package get them to at least consider moving Fulmer? Too much or too little? You've got a Top 20 guy in Brinson, a Top 100 guy (at least) in Burnes who is turning a lot of heads this season, and a borderline Top 100 (and Futures Game participant) in Dubon. Then, we can throw in more of a lottery ticket arm in Herrera who has some good upside. Seems like a good haul to me.
  16. With the immense OF depth in our system right now, I did briefly consider the idea of trading Santana - as we are eventually going to need to trade one or more of these guys heading into next season. However, I just don't think you can trade Santana right now as you are in the middle of a pennant race. Even if you use him as the major piece to get a guy like Sonny Gray in return, what type of message does that send to the fan base that you are going out and trading away one of your biggest and hottest bats? And I don't think there is anyway that a Phillips/Brinson platoon the last few months of the season is going to give you anywhere near what Santana would. As I stated though - we are going to need to trade 1 or 2 of these guys by next season as there is going to be no reason you'd want to send Brinson back to AAA for another year, and Phillips and Cordell have also proven about as much as they need to in AAA this year. Best case scenario is that Broxton gets his season turned around a bit and finds more consistency in the 2nd half, and then we move him in the offseason. However, I highly doubt that he finds that consistency that we are hoping for.
  17. I think a package centered around Tim Dillard would suffice. Well, he would instantly elevate the A's to one of the most interesting social media teams in the league! There has to be some value in that, right? Ha. Yeah, I think we need to be more realistic in our prospect packages here, as Oakland would laugh Stearns right off the phone if we offered up a deal that included Davies and Jungmann as headliners (along with a struggling Corey Ray). Ray and another top prospect like Dubon, Burnes or Ortiz - maybe? But, Davies or Jungmann (especially Taylor) would be "throw-in's" to any deal.
  18. Something tells me that Burnes is going to have to be involved in any deal for Gray. Something like Davies, Burnes, Ray, and Pennington.
  19. Boy, if we could make this deal - and only give up Davies (Gray would replace him anyway), Cordell & Ray (we have plenty of OF prospects in our system so we'll have to trade some eventually), and Ventura - that would be an amazing deal by Stearns. Only giving up one of your top 10 prospects (in a loaded system), and getting a TOR starter, would be huge.
  20. If it is only going to take Wilkerson and Pierre/Lujano, then why is this deal not already done? I realize that Neshek is 36 and a F/A at the end of the season, but he's also got one of the best ERA's in all of baseball this year. I have a feeling the Phillies are going to ask teams for more than a AAAA pitcher and a teenage lottery ticket. I'd love to be wrong here, but if that's all it is going to take to get a guy like Neshek then I'm not sure what is taking DS this long to go get him?
  21. Do you think this package gets it done: One of Ray/Phillips (gives Oakland their CF prospect) One of Dubon/Diaz (gives Oakland a middle infield prospect) One of Pennington/Herrera (more of a high risk/high reward young arm) Is that too much to give up or too little? Considering the Cubs gave up a top 10 prospect in Jimenez and another Top 100 guy in Cease for Quintana, I'm thinking that my package probably isn't good enough? Something tells me that we'd have to part with either Brinson, Hader, Woodruff or Burnes to get the deal done. Would you be willing to give up one of those four guys in this deal to get Gray? If DS can pull off a trade for Gray without giving up any of those four guys, I'd be absolutely thrilled.
  22. I'm guessing it would take a lot more to get Neshek. He's not a closer, and isn't on the same level as Aroldis Chapman anyway - but I'm guessing it would take more than one of our AAA catchers and Cordell. My guess is you'd need to throw in a high upside arm like Diplan or Pennington, and then someone like Cordell. Is three months of Neshek worth giving up a package like that? He certainly looked nasty this weekend and has put up fantastic numbers all year. Still, a lot to give up for 3 months of a player.
  23. Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone is so concerned about signability with some of these HS picks. There's no way our front office would make these selections in these early rounds if they didn't feel really good about their chances of signing these guys. Could there be a big surprise in one of these guys going to college? I guess.....but, I'd put my money on all of these HS kids in the first 8 rounds signing with the Brewers.
  24. Would Suter get called up to be the 26th guy today, since his start was cut short on Sunday? Still a bit surprised though that they didn't just add Woodruff to be the 26th man, unless if they are planning to keep him up beyond his start today.
  25. Could they not have called up Woodruff to be the 26th man, or what am I not understanding here? Does this mean that Woodruff might have a chance to stick for awhile?
