  1. What were the Cubs doing, putting Dempster in a non-save situation?
  2. Meltdown by the Cubs!
  3. I don't mind Yost's decision to start the 8th inning with Shouse based on the 4-run lead and the splits mentioned. What I do hate is not bringing in Cordero once it is realized that Turnbow does not have his good stuff. It really bothers me when a team loses a close game without using their best pitcher. Put him in with the game on the line, worry about the 9th inning when (if) the 9th inning comes.
  4. "What is this, the 5th straight game for Co-Co? Wow. Ned is a riverboat gambler at heart... I think its his 6th" Yeah I can't believe he's in there again... showing that he's tired, he gives up as many hits in the past 2 games as he had all season... But he gets it done again, that's a save in 5 straight games!
  5. The umpire should get credit for stealing a run....
  6. Wes Obermueller has been called up to join the Marlins.
  7. "Z in the 5th Single Single Walk Single Single Double HBP Walk Walk" To be fair, Zambrano left after the HBP.
  8. I wonder if he is a lock to make the team.
  9. John Vukovich, long time Phillies coach, recently passed away. He hit 5 of his 6 career homeruns with the Brewers in 1973 and 1974, playing in 93 games at all 4 infield positions.
  10. I don't like to rip on Schroeder like others, but he hasn't heard of Alexander Cartwright?
  11. For some reason I am holding my breath while Sheets is pitching. Sorry I can't help it. Hopefully I'll feel better after his first outing of the spring.
  12. Ronnie Belliard- minor league deal with Washington. Is he better than Cristian Guzman? Lopez could end up moving back to SS. Kelly Stinnett- minor league deal with the Dodgers.
  13. "...I'm almost certain that professional athletes file in every state where they play and 'earn income.'" Yes it depends on the state's laws, but athletes are subject to most states' "entertainer tax" rules in which they must pay state taxes in proportion to the number of games or events they perform in that state. I have seen this in preparing a tax return for a professional hockey player.
  14. Alejandro Machado moves on to the Twins via the Rule 5 draft.
  15. Yahoo's transactions page noted Roberto Giron to the Royals.
  16. "SEA took a utility IF from us in the 90's...Jeff Huson?" According to retrosheet, he left as a FA and signed with Colorado before the Mariners rule fived him.
  17. "Find a list of Brewers who have been selected in the major league phase of the Rule 5 draft in say, the last twenty years." Couldn't find an actual list, so I apologize for the incompleteness of my research. I'll keep looking for a complete list. Here's what I found searching the transaction file from retrosheet.org: Ramon Garcia 1996 by the Astros. Bobby M Jones 1994 by the Rockies. Tim Fortugno 1991 by the Angels. Dave Stapleton 1988 by the Astros. Bob Gibson 1986 by the White Sox. Jeff Parrett 1985 by the Expos. Willie Lozado 1984 by the Cardinals. Footnote #1- this would not include any player who never played in the major leagues as they are not in the transaction database. Potentially, this could leave out a player that was drafted and then returned to the Brewers. Footnote #2- I'm not sure this differentiates players taken in the minor league phase, so these could possibly be minor league selections. Footnote #3- My search methods are not infallible, so I could have missed others.
  18. I'm definitely with you on the descriptive titles; those non-descriptive thread titles continue to bug me all the time. In the USA Today article example, however, at least a link to the duplicate thread was given, so you could just click on the link and still get to the article and discussion. I think limiting the discussion on an article to one thread is usually a good thing.
  19. Recently saw in mlb.com transactions page, Chris Michalak and Alejandro Machado were signed by Washington.
  20. Hard to believe he can get more than 3/$33. Wow.
  21. "As long as the contributions to Brian are deemed gifts by both parties and the amount of the contribution is below $11,000, then there are not any income tax ramifications to either party. (ie. Brian is in the clear and does not need to claim this income. However, there are ways for him to claim the loss to offset his other income.)" The gift exclusion is now $12,000 (and that's per year, which I'm sure you meant to say). Sadly, I don't think that this limit will come into play. However, I wouldn't bet against the IRS classifying this as payments for services, especially if brewerfan.net is run as a business. If brewerfan.net does not operate as a business, and does not make a profit, then hobby loss rules come into play, making it very difficult to claim the loss to offset other income. Just my CPA two cents worth.
  22. No added insight, but this is unbelievably funny...
  23. I'm here and listening to the game. I just want the record to show.
  24. Another short stay for Breslow... back to Pawtucket.
