  1. Good lord.....Alverez, whose been raking has also been removed from the game for some kind of injury. Josh Harrison is going to have to go it alone.
  2. Unfortunately, Braun could hit .330 with 35 HR and 120 RBI and some of the voters would not vote for him. That makes me wonder: Has there EVER been a player voted an award after a PED incident? (I can't think of any)
  3. Mc Cutchen caught a ball at the wall and FROZE after he hit it. He looked bad in his next AB and sure enough he was lifted. I KNEW they brought him back too soon. (Bucs up 2-0) Cole pitching a gem.
  4. No, Castro got back yesterday. Watching MLB right now and they're talking about how much trouble they are going to be for the Brewers, Cards and Pirates the rest of the way. But I see they play them about an equal amount of games, so they shouldn't be that much of a factor in the race. To tell the truth, I wouldn't mind losing 2-1 to them in the next series. It's the sweep that scares me!
  5. Oh, for sure. Their attendance has been down this year but that should change drastically next. Where will they finish? Third? Better? If they DO manage to pass the Reds this year the word will be out and expectations go through the roof!
  6. I know. It sure looked like he was "back" when he tossed the no-no. I wonder who will replace him in the rotation?
  7. Lots of talent getting out of that little country lately. Did Castro kick the bucket and I missed hearing about it? Soler shot through the ranks this year. Probably too quickly. But it's a good idea for him to see some big league pitching for a month. He was pulled from his game last night after hitting one out which usually means he'll get the start tonight in Cincy, facing Cueto. Jumping right into the fire!
  8. Sent to AAA
  9. 2013....When he goes deep off KC's Ervin Santana, Bryce Harper becomes the third player in baseball history to hit 40 homers before his 21st birthday. The Washington outfielder joins Mel Ott and Tony Conigliaro, who hit 61 and 56 round-trippers, respectively, for the Giants and Red Sox, before reaching their age of majority. http://www.baseballlibrary.com/pics/Ott_Mel.gif High leg kicking Ott founded the NL 500 HR club and was the inspiration for Leo Durocher's "Nice guys finish last" statement to the press when he took Ott's Giants' managing job. Mel was pretty easy going in the dugout, but a pitchers nightmare at the plate. Not just for the power he generated in leading the league in HR's 8 times, but also for his skill in working walks. His baseball reference page is well worth visiting.
  10. The Cubs had a pretty fair weekend, sweeping the cream of the AL East Orioles. A very loud spoiler alert. They're going to do some serious damage in September, and they have a foreseeable goal to shoot for; finishing 4th. For whatever reason, the Cubs do fine out of the division, damn near .500, but are awful IN it. (19-32) Overall post season picture Nats_____ 75_ 54_ .581 Dodgers__ 74_ 58_ .561 Brewers__ 72_ 58_ .554 Cardinals__ 70_ 59_ .543_wc Giants____ 68_ 61_ .527_wc Atlanta____ 68_ 63_ .519_ 1 Pirates____ 67_ 63_ .515_ 1½ Except for the Reds dropping out, Nats and Braves switching places and LA and SF doing the same, things have not changed much in the last 4 months. I don't see any team being mathematically eliminated 'till the last week of the season. The most interesting race may turn out to be for the home field advantage. I don't see the Dodgers staying mentally tough enough to keep giving 100% with the huge lead they enjoy over SF.
  11. Bombers, that's a blessing in disguise. Since the elbow issue and Molina being out his ERA has blown up and BB/K ratio dramatically down. He's no ace anymore. Still has the curveball, but no fastball to set it up. Lance Lynn is now the Cards #1, and that's not going to change THIS season. If you care for details: http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/bernie-miklasz/bernie-wondering-about-waino/article_4b37e7b8-e6e2-5019-838d-135f68f32fd5.html
  12. The Cubs, getting young and pretty exiting are beating the Orioles right now. Game on WGN. I shudder to think of the possible competitiveness in the Central next year if they open their fat wallet for a couple of ace starters this off-season.
  13. If ever there was a team with its back to the wall it's these Pirates. Gerrit Cole has returned strong but will miss this series. Josh Harrison has cooled off and Cutch, though throwing well, can't buy a good AB so far. And of course the game's in Miller Park. We'll see what they're made of in the next 6 games. I look for them to give the Brewers and Cards their moneys worth.
  14. As Mc Cutchen has returned less than good ESPN and MLB have officially jumped off the Pirates bandwagon and pronounced the Central a 2 team race. Of course, a Pirates series win over the Brewers this weekend and the Cards next week could change all that. But the Reds look like the walking dead right now. The Atlanta game last night was hard to watch.
  15. 1965... Dodgers mild mannered Koufax could not bring himself to retaliate for an earlier drilling by Giants' pitcher Juan Marichal to one of his hitters, so catcher Roseboro took it upon himself to buzz a return throw past Marichal's ear. The Giants bench had been teasing Juan that Roseboro was gonna get him, so he was tense and wary when he stepped up to the plate. But nobody would have expected him to go crazy and konk Johnny with his bat. If the Brooklyn/NY teams' rivalry had been cooling off in California, it was certainly renewed by this incident. The profuse bleeding made the blow seem worse than it was. Mays, the peacemaker cradled the enemy catchers head and steered him off the field telling him in a frightened voice "Come on Rosie...your eye is hanging out" Forty-some years later the two men met up and buried the hatchet. I saw a film on the reunion and Marichal's English had not improved.
  16. I don't think it is. I found an authentic photo taken from the stands but it was from quite a distance and you couldn't make out anything. Face, uni both indescernable. So I went with this one. And no, I think in those days they would just holler out "Is there a doctor in the house"?
  17. Of course it's an advantage. It's enjoyed by teams of all sports that sweep in the first round and have to wait 'till another round is decided in seven. That's FIVE days off!
  18. A nice rundown on the Central in this short video http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2014/08/20/san-francisco-giants-chicago-cubs-protest-rain-tarp-wrigley-field/14365471/?AID=10709313&PID=3753211&SID=1clo7xgy8wc2q
  19. This seems impossible, but in 1935 at Braves Field, Cardinals' first baseman Ripper Collins doesn't make a single putout during the 13-3 nine-inning loss to Boston. The infielder, who will also not make a putout playing first for the Cubs in a game two years later against Brooklyn, is the only player to have accomplished the very rare feat twice in a career. 1982...1982 Brewers' reliever Rollie Fingers becomes the first player in major league history to record 300 career saves when Milwaukee defeats the Mariners, 3-2. http://media.jrn.com/images/rollie21912a.jpg 1990....By the 9th inning Tommy Lasorda had switched out all of his regulars as the Dodgers enjoyed an 11-3 lead over the visiting Phillies..... then this:
  20. The 2011 Cards were pretty damn good. They were a 90 win team and 3rd in the NL in run differential at +70 behind the Brewers and Phillies. 2006.....well, not so much That's the big issue for old school thinking fans. But it's hard to argue that that the playoff system has not proved to be very interesrting, and popular. But I wish they would tweak it in some way so that the actual winningest team had an advantage in the tourney. That team is the REAL pennant winner. A bye round while the WC teams play best of THREE games would suit me. But the season is too long as it is....That's the argument that could easily be fixed by eliminating off days in September as the teams are 40 men deep, and the off days in the NLCS and WS could be reduced from 3 to 1. They're not loading up on trains anymore to switch towns! This system would keep the front runners honest because a team with a big division lead could not rest and set up their ace pitchers for the LCS, but keep fielding their best team to the end up with the BEST record in their league to get that bye round. I don't think anybody likes this 1 game WC business. I hate it.
  21. That's a good thing for sure, but Atlanta's beat down of the Pirates has put them back in the WC picture!
  22. Actually, I'm open to the idea of using a 5 man rotation in the playoffs, depending on how they're all doing coming into the playoffs. Keep the arms fresh, the opponent doesn't get a 2nd look at the starter as often, and as of now there really isn't much separation 1-6. Sticking a to a 5 man rotation in the playoffs may not be the worst idea. I like that idea. As to the 6 man rotation, I've seen it tried by La Russa in September 2010. The Cards had a big lead in the standings and it seemed like a good idea. But the top 3, Carpenter, Wainwright and Garcia only won ONE game between them the rest of the way. At one point we lost 8 straight. We barely won the division and were swept by an LA team in the LCS that we had dominated in the regular season. A bitter lesson.
  23. I watched every inning of your game last night (until it became a laugher) to get a look at Fiers.... that guy's a big league pitcher.
  24. I would have thought it was a joke too if it had been ended with a smiley of some sort....instead of the word "Bub". Nobody uses that term in a friendly way.I'm still like 99.9999999% sure he was joking/just giving you a hard time "So what you're saying is that there's still a chance?"
  25. I didn't join Brewerfan.net to blow any Cardinal trumpets. Just swapping baseball talk and offering an opinion like everyone else. You seem to regard the Cards as some kind of baseball monolith. That's your opinion. I just don't happen to share it. OK?I'm pretty sure dlk9s was just making a joke I would have thought it was a joke too if it had been ended with a smiley of some sort....instead of the word "Bub". Nobody uses that term in a friendly way.
