  1. Is it wrong that I think this would be AWESOME! I suspect him heavily. Fit's the PED pattern pretty good. This shot is reminiscent of ARod and Canseco's love of self.
  2. 1969.... In an alley behind a Detroit bar, Twins' manager Billy Martin, intervenes in a scuffle between his starting pitcher Dave Boswell and outfielder Bob Allison, resulting in the right-hander being knocked unconscious, and in need of 20 stitches, after being pummeled by his skipper. Although he will miss several starts because of the incident, the 24 year-old Maryland native will finish the season 20-12 for the first-place Minnesota club. http://www.mmf.umn.edu/neuro/baarc/images/Bob-Allison-portrait.jpg _
  3. Translates to a cracked rib. That's an injury of another color. I sustained a cracked rib wrestling. Funny thing about it was that it didn't bother me unless I took a DEEP breath or raised my arms. Then a sharp stabbing pain that would make me flinch. Of course during matches it hurt a lot. I never won another all season. It takes rest for those ribs to mend over. Mc Cutchen will rest for 15 days or so and come back too soon and the 1st time he swings hard will undo the healing. If he can ignore the pain he can play, but the adjustments his body makes to lessen the stabs will throw off his game. Pirates' sawbones know all this and will play it by ear. Bottom line: he will return but his game will suffer to some degree. It's hard to sit on the bench when you feel just fine.
  4. Not quite a hot mess, but as Torts alluded to, Clint Hurdle has lost patience with 3B Pedro Alvarez. Though his offense is down this season, Alvarez is being benched for defensive reasons. He's committed a league-high 24 errors, most attributable to his wild throws. Alvrarez made three errant throws Saturday night in Arizona before being replaced by Hurdle in the sixth inning. For now, Josh Harrison will take over at 3B, and they signed Jayson Nix to help out on days when Harrison plays in the outfield. There's some talk about moving Alvarez to first base. The Pirates have received an MLB-worst 39 RBIs from the 1B position this season. Things are tough all over in the Central, from top to bottom. There's been some talk that there's a problem of some sort brewing between Oscar Tavares and his teammates in St. Louis. I don't know what's up with that yet.
  5. Sounds about right.
  6. Exactly. With what we know about the benefits of abdominal flexibility training there is no reason for these athletes to continue having these abdominal and oblique issues. Simple Yoga. Really? They just need to do yoga? LOL...don't say "just". Yoga isn't easy. Remember those exercises we did in gym class? Toe touches, deep knee bends and hands on the hips torso twists? Ball teams used to do that stuff on the field as a group in Spring Training and beyond. No more. They leave it to the players nowadays, who are more concerned with strength than flexibility.
  7. Exactly. With what we know about the benefits of abdominal flexibility training there is no reason for these athletes to continue having these abdominal and oblique issues. Simple Yoga. Too much of this Not enough of this
  8. 1969.... With a titanic blast that clears the right-field pavilion, Willie Stargell becomes the first player to hit a home run completely out of Dodger Stadium. The 506-foot round-tripper helps the Pirates defeat LA, 11-3. http://www.ccsabathia52.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/STARGELL.jpg I have to wonder who's done it since.
  9. Tell me Torts; what's the deal with 'Cutch? Was it the HBP in the D'Backs game or is it something else? On the Reds: have to give them credit the way they're hanging in there, and with the tough schedule facing the Brewers and Cards it looks like they will be it for a while. I hear that BP's recovery is ahead of schedule.
  10. Never having heard of Baez I went over to NSBB to read what was being said, and I'll tell you that I have never seen those poor souls so thrilled and exited. This kid must really be something! Apparently he'll make his first start vs. the Rockies (tomorrow?) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/08/04/levine-cubs-calling-up-javier-baez/
  11. The NL Central whipping boys went to LA last weekend and made a statement, coming within a hair of a sweep of the high powered Dodgers. They clubbed them 8-2 in game 1. It took 12 innings and an unheard of August rainstorm (which drew an ovation from the crowd) for LA to win game 2. Chicago won the final game with a 3 run outburst in the 8th for a 7-3 series win. In case you didn't catch it on Sportscenter, Puig came in at one point for only his 2nd pinch-hit opportunity of the year and produced a hard single as the crowd went wild. No doubt full of himself he thought to steal 2nd and was promptly picked off 1st. The crowd went mum. It's not that I hate the Dodgers, I just love David and Goliath stuff. http://thumb.usatodaysportsimages.com/image/thumb/540-390nw/7887322.jpg
  12. 1983....Another reason that makes me wonder if Canadians are crazy: Dave Winfield kills a seagull at Exhibition Stadium with a warmup throw prior to the home fifth inning. After the 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays, the Yankees outfielder is arrested by the Ontario police and charged with animal cruelty. http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/sBY3DLr5sYOZ8Jt2yzRfCA--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NQ--/http://mit.zenfs.com/277/2013/08/sunpic.png 2008.... During a Brewers' 6-3 loss to the Reds at Great American Ball Park, first baseman Prince Fielder confronts starting pitcher Manny Parra in the dugout, shoving the hurler twice in the dugout after an angry exchange of words. The Milwaukee hurler had taken a no-hitter into the fifth, but gave up six runs on four hits and four walks before leaving the game for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/0805/mlb_a_prince_300.jpg
  13. Like yesterday, the pitchers match up pretty well. Should be a good rubber game. The Cards have 5 lefties starting; Brewers all righties. AJ and Lackey reunite for the 1st time.
  14. 1940....When Reds catcher Williard Hershberger fails to appear for batting practice several teammates go to his hotel room and find him dead in the bathtub, throat slashed. Murder was ruled out when first baseman Bill Werber tells the police that Willard had told him the previous day My old man killed himself and I'm going to do it too. He had been a standout player in the minors and a very good back-up for Ernie Lombardi who was out with an injury. The Reds were embroiled in a tight pennant race and Willard was slumping and blamed himself. In anguish, he told his mates that if Lombardi was playing the team would still be winning. Talking for hours after the game, Cincinnati skipper Bill McKechnie thought he had consoled the fragile backstop, who was utterly distraught about leaving runners on base in every at bat with his 0-for-5 performance at the plate. But something in his mind that had been bending since his father's death finally snapped. Devastated, the team vowed they would win it all and give Willard's widow what would have been Ernie's $5K share out of their own pockets. They did, and they did. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/attachments/ootp-mods-rosters-photos-quick-starts/321233d1389509278-krantzbucks-pics-colorize-willard-hershberger-reds-next-2.1.jpg The last photo ever taken of the tragic catcher
  15. Para's got to be the best left fielder I've seen in MANY years. Man!
  16. I'd like to see a still photo to see just how high off the ground he was there.
  17. East_ Nats Cen_ Brewers West_ LA Not too bold a prediction as that's how it stands now. WC's: Pirates/Braves The Giants, Reds and Cards have just too many issues right now. It's quite possible that Miami will pass them all.
  18. Yep. ARam's AB's have been w/men on. Matheny had to do the next best thing.
  19. Can't believe Matheny let him pitch to ARam w/1st base open.
  20. He owned everybody in June and in July up to the All-Star break. In two starts since the All-Star break (not counting tonight), he has one stinker and one gem. He's had three bad outings all season. Not to argue, but in the gem he was in trouble all night. Got out of jams and had a few DP's turned behind him. Only charged with 1 ER I think.
