  1. Thanks. I wish Quick Pitch could come on earlier when I wasn't half baked, half asleep. But now I remember it was you guys that played the Bucs and won a toughie, 1-0. Did I dream it or did Caine make another insane catch at the wall to save the game?
  2. I gave a thought to recording the game but didn't. I could kick myself. Watching the A.M. pundits it was unanimous that it was more a Mets fail than Pirate success. I'm not so sure. [mod note--changed title to Nationals]
  3. You're not far off. The franchise is flawed from top to bottom. Pixie dust eventually blows away.
  4. Tommy refused a multi year deal at the end of last season. He was by far the team's MVP. He miscalculated. His bad base running (getting picked off, caught stealing, getting nailed at 3B trying to stretch a dbl. all seemed to come at the worst times) Reduced power, low BA too. He could get away with bucking the FO when he was a star. He's FAR from that now. Being traded to the Rays in the AL East has to be one of the most brutal destinations for a man that wants to win. FO payback? Now if they could figure out a way to move fowler.
  5. TRUST ME, he sucks! 41 saves last year, this year ZERO saves and I don't know how many blown ones and losses. Another case of a ball player thinking he won't suck if he goes off his 'roids.
  6. I'm big Teddy Ballgame fan and I was pleasantly surprised to see a documentary that mentioned his Mexican heritage and the fact that it shamed him. But they failed to elaborate on his jailbird brother, who like Carl Flood was dependent to his brother (Curt) for bail money and other financial help for their entire lives. Afterthought: Curt always asserted that bigger brother Carl was actually a better ballplayer than he! Too bad he couldn't get on the straight and narrow. Imagine Flood 3 inches taller and 30lb heavier with the same skillset!
  7. Not seeing many Pirate games lately, I have no idea how they are winning. But I can guarantee that the Cards are not capable of pulling off a 10 gamer (or a 5 gamer for that matter) A Pirate swoon is not inevitable and shouldn't be counted on. The Cubs will be there for sure. Will the Brewers or Cards? I'm dubious. Chorizo said: It will be interesting to see what happens to the Cards following Matheny getting canned - I can see that club fading. The new guy, Shildts, is proving to be a Matheny knockoff. They won't fade...they will continue to be a .500 team. What about the Brewers? Do you see them getting back to form before September?
  8. The Norris thing was indeed the final straw. The larger issue was a simple case of the team just not liking Matheny. He would send scripture based texts to the players. Fowler got sick of them and deleted Matheny's account. This made the news and that was the death knell. I was delighted.
  9. The new manager took him out in the 6th with 2 more plate appearances left vs. position players I don't like the new skipper already. Everyone is anointing LA as the best team in the NL since they got Machado. I hope Miley puts one in his ribs.
  10. It was such a strange feeling. I am a pessimist by nature but it felt fait accompli after that first game. You just knew it was going to be a sweep. For such a team game, it is bizarre how baseball can generate such TANGIBLE momentum in one direction or another. I always know which way the Brewers are trending. I would even say after that third Miami game in the series they lost, I knew the sweep was coming in Pitt. I know just how you feel. Now we have a 5 gamer vs. the Cubs and they take game one easy as pie.
  11. I have to wonder what the Vegas odds were of a Bucs 5 game sweep? That number had to be astronomical. I, personally have never seen a 5 gamer before. So as the Pirates and Cincy continue to win and Crew/Cards stumble it sets up what should be the mother of all WC races. Us and FIVE MORE teams. Good grief.
  12. Not picking on you personally but this is the type of criticism that always baffles me. How are any of those things on Matheny? The player yes. The GM who brought him in yes. Hell the baserunning coach can even share the blame. The manager is about the last person in the team to blame for that. Reread my post. I don't blame Mike at all. Not HIS fault he was kept for near seven years with his horrid in-game managing. And of course the players are also to blame for a myriad of on field gaffs too numerous to list. I did read your post. It was overly hyperbolic as witnesses by the worst manager since Ken Boyer comment and the example you chose to use as another nail in the coffin had nothing to do with Matheny. I get 90% of the fans of every team hates pretty much every in game decision the manager makes but come on. Cardinal fans are supposed to be more baseball savvy than that. FYI: Boyer was my HERO when I was a kid and I liked Matheny when he caught for the team. Neither had ANY business managing a team. Same goes for Joe Torre. Boyer and Torre got fired quick, but Mike just went on and on. Seven damn years of waiting for his sorry butt to get the can would lead ANY fan to hyperbolley!
  13. I would bet money that they keep this Shildt guy. GM Mozelic would never bring in a man with his own baseball mind. The man's too insecure. EDIT: In answer to your second question (my preference) of the men available I would like Ozzie Guillen. Too bad he's Latino. So no chance at Joe Girardi??? As a baseball fan I would think he would be a very good addition if the Cards decided to pursue him. If Buck Showalter is not kept in Baltimore after the season, he is another very good baseball mind out on the market. I think John Farrell is a good addition to a mgmt group (either in FO or coaching staff) but was not a fan of him as a manager (in Toronto or Boston).. Mo' won't hire ANY established Major League manager. PERIOD. But Girardi would be more than fine with me. Buck too.

  16. Last night I said on my forum that last night's loss was another nail in the Matheny coffin. He's got a guy in Dexter Fowler that's playing such bad baseball...just hard to believe he's still suiting up. Here's what happened: Runners on 2nd and 3rd, no outs. Hard grounder to 3rd and Fowler gets caught about 4 feet off the bag. Instead of continuing to home to start a rundown so the other runners can advance he runs back to 3B immediatly, goes out of the baseline, gets called out and without having to make a tag the 3Bman throws to 1st to double up the hitter, Pham. It was a jaw dropping thing to watch. It was truly sickening. More proof that the rich SOB's on this team really don't give a damn. I don't blame Matheny for being the worst manager I've seen since Ken Boyer...I blame the GM that hired and supported his sorry ass these long six years. He still has his job. That's too bad for so-called Cardinal nation.
  17. EDIT: Make that 5-0 How did they go from 2-1 to 5-0? Lol. Cubs just can't figure out the Reds. Chatwood is hilarious. Loaded the bases with 2 outs, then threw back to back wild pitches for 2 runs and then got the 3rd out on the next pitch. The homer was hit so hard that the official scorer deducted a Cub run.
  18. Sure looks like it. The announcer said the Reds have the best record in the NL since May 16th or June 1st....or some other date! http://gatewayredbirds.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
  19. Cubs losing again to Cincy, 2-1 early. The game is on MLBTV.
  20. I wouldn't say the Brewers " roughed him up" .....they did score 4 runs though.....lol Four runs in 3 innings is pretty rough! http://b3.ifrm.com/5919/67/0/e5027429//e5027429.gif
  21. I just tuned in and I see this Fried kid who totally shut down the Cards last week as the Braves SWEPT us in three is being roughed up by the Crew. Hmmmm Braves are going to win the East. I wonder what the Vegas odds were on that? PS: Damn fine inning by Chacin there.
  22. You play the Twins and Tigers who are two of the worst teams in baseball right now Well that and you have a bunch of guys who can hit all over your lineup. LOL...that does help!
  23. The Giants have quietly started to win despite a rash of injuries to key players, the latest to return will be Cueto at home tonight vs. the Cards. If he returns to form I expect the Giants to be in the WC mix. Same goes for LA. I expect them BOTH to overtake the Snakes. This has to be the worst possible year in memory for WC possibility of success. It will be a veritable gauntlet of tough teams to navigate. I fully expect to see the Brewers and Cubs have to face off as one or the other wins the division and the other maybe have the 2nd best record in the NL. The other teams will like that. On the Northsiders: How do you lose Kris Bryant and not skip a beat?
  24. Did you guys notice there were 5 guests listed for that 1970 show? Geezers know the show was an hour and a half back then. I don't remember Barbara Anderson but quite familiar with the other 4. Someone, somewhere MUST have the clip!
