Carolina 4, Winston-Salem 3 Marcos Diplan started game 2 for the Mudcats going 5 innings and giving up 3 runs, 2 earned. He gave up two walks and struck out 7 in earning his 4th win of the season. Wuilder Rodriguez pitched a one-two-three 6th and lowered his ERA to 1.35. Nate Griep worked the 7th inning and, despite 2 walks, posted his 12th save of the season. Lucas Erceg had a 3 run home run in the 1st for the Mudcats off Dash starter Dane Dunning. The winning run scored when Carlos Belonis reached first on a throwing error, went to second on a Trent Clark sacrifice bunt and scored from second on a wild pitch when the catcher could not locate the ball. Mudcats slug their way to doubleheader sweep Carolina totaled six extra-base hits over both games of Tuesday's twin bill By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | June 6, 2017 11:47 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/2/4/231792024/cuts/16x9_LuisAviles_cgu85mev_bw864evq.jpg (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Carlos Rodon started the game for the Dash on a rehab assignment for the White Sox. He struck out the side in the 1st inning on just 10 pitches. He had 8 in a row when Isan Diaz stepped out on him which seemed to irritate him a little bit. He then overthrew the next pitch which missed high. Diaz struck out on the 10th pitch though. Rodon also struck out the side in the 2nd inning but in between those K's was a single by Jake Gatewood, double off the center field fence by Lucas Erceg and a home run by Luis Aviles. The Mudcats went on to score 5 runs off Rodon. Trey Supak (5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K) got the start for the Mudcats and had some control issues, especially early in the game. He would get the win. The home run he gave up was of the inside-the-park variety when Troy Stokes leaped at the wall and couldn't recover in time. Brad Kuntz finished off the final two innings. Gatwood ended up 1-3 in the opener. Erceg was 2-3 and Aviles 1-3. Weston Wilson ended up 2-3 with two long doubles to the gap in right center. Trent Clark's assist discussed in this thread came when a runner was going with the pitch and a fly was hit to Clark. He threw to first before the runner could return to the base. Carolina Box Score Game 1 Carolina Game 1 Log Carolina Bottom of the 2nd Jake Gatewood singles on a ground ball to right fielder Landon Lassiter. Trent Clark called out on strikes. Luis Aviles homers (5) on a fly ball to left center field. Lucas Erceg scores. Max McDowell strikes out on a foul tip. Weston Wilson strikes out swinging.

Scratch all that. Postponed today due to rain.

A couple of story lines going for Carolina: Dane Dunning going for Winston-Salem tonight. Last time he faced Carolina, he threw a pitch over Lucas Erceg's head after Erceg hit a home run off him. Dunning claimed Erceg watched the home run or something. Doesn't help that the Mudcats are 7-1 against them. Carlos Rodon will start against the Mudcats Tuesday on a rehab start.

Whenever this topic comes up: Cut back to George attempting to explain his cowardly actions to Robin, her mother, Eric and a fireman from the back of the ambulance at the party. GEORGE (voice is hoarse from screaming): I...was trying to lead the way. We needed a leader! Someone to lead the way to safety. ROBIN: But you yelled "get out of my way"! GEORGE: Because! Because, as the leader...if I die...then all hope is lost! Who would lead? The clown? Instead of castigating me, you should all be thanking me. What kind of a topsy-turvy world do we live in, where heroes are cast as villains? Brave men as cowards? ROBIN: But I saw you push the women and children out of the way in a mad panic! I saw you knock them down! And when you ran out, you left everyone behind! GEORGE: Seemingly. Seemingly, to the untrained eye, I can fully understand how you got that impression. What looked like pushing...what looked like knocking down...was a safety precaution! In a fire, you stay close to the ground, am I right? And when I ran out that door, I was not leaving anyone behind! Oh, quite the contrary! I risked my life making sure that exit was clear. Any other questions?

Gatewood delivers walk-off single in 8-7 victory The Mudcats scored four late runs in their 8-7 walk-off win By Carolina Mudcats | June 4, 2017 7:14 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/9/0/231791890/cuts/16x9_CodyPonce2_xux4wdy5_199yc42r.jpg 30 hits in this game, 16 from the Mudcats. The Mudcats scored 3 runs in the 8th to tie the game before finishing the game off in the 9th. Cody Ponce (4 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 92 pitches, 64 for strikes) started and the box score looks worse than his actual performance. The Dash had several cheap hits in there and some plays the defense didn't make for him. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K) followed Ponce with a strong outing. Eric Hanhold (2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) finished off the game and took the win. Corey Ray had a golden sombrero and looked very uncomfortable at the plate today for some reason. He did get a hit in his last at bat that blooped in over the 3rd baseman. Jake Gatewood (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI, game winning hit) led the offense. As mentioned, Lucas Erceg was 4-5 with a double and 3 RBIs. Interestingly, the double was a cue job down the 3rd base line whereas earlier in the game, he hit a screamer off the right field wall and was held to a single. Trent Clark (2-3, 2 BB) was on base 4 times including a bunt single. Cooper Hummel and Weston Wilson chipped in with 2 hits each. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Skipping to the good stuff: Carolina Bottom of the 8th Cooper Hummel singles on a ground ball to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Isan Diaz singles on a line drive to center fielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Troy Stokes Jr. scores. Jake Gatewood hit by pitch. Isan Diaz to 2nd. Pitching Change: Ryan Riga replaces Jake Johansen. Lucas Erceg doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Landon Lassiter. Isan Diaz scores. Jake Gatewood to 3rd. Trent Clark walks. Luis Aviles lines out to shortstop Johan Cruz. Ryan Riga intentionally walks Troy Stokes Jr. Isan Diaz walks. Corey Ray to 3rd. Troy Stokes Jr. to 2nd. Jake Gatewood singles on a line drive to left fielder Landon Lassiter. Corey Ray scores. Mudcats leave with series split in Buies Creek Carolina left 10 men on base in Saturday's series finale loss to the Astros By Carolina Mudcats | June 3, 2017 10:17 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/4/0/231381640/cuts/16x9_DiazThrowing_f6t63opb_fhbhyuzq.jpg Infielder Isan Diaz playing for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, NC. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Kodi Medeiros (4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K) took 56 pitches to get through the first two innings and only lasted 4 innings in taking the loss. Jordan Yamamoto (3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K) wasn't much better taking 46 pitches to get through his first two innings. Scott Grist worked a scoreless 8th. Men left on base was the story of the day for the Mudcats' offense. Jake Gatewood (0-5) led the way with 8 LOB. Troy Stokes (1-5) left 7 on base. They had the bases loaded with less than two outs three times and only scored 2 runs on those occasions. On the brighter side was Corey Ray (2-3, 2 BB) and Isan Diaz (1-3, 2 BB, RBI). Max McDowell, who is in a prolonged slump, reached base 4 times with 3 walks and a hit by pitch. Offense falls flat in 3-2 loss to Astros Freddy Peralta allowed just one earned run in the loss By Carolina Mudcats | June 2, 2017 10:57 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/6/6/231791866/cuts/16x9_FreddyPeraltaRJHennessy_Photography_gjz557a2_ozdpfxke.jpg Freddy Peralta pitching for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. (RJHennessy Photography) The Mudcats could only manage 3 hits in this game. Still, they scored 2 runs in the 7th to tie the game but surrended a run in the bottom of that inning for the final margin. A two out rally in the 9th fell short. Freddie Peralta (6 1/3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K) started and took the loss. Brad Kuntz finished the game and the last run came in when he allowed an inherited runner to score on a two out double by Rodrigo Ayarza. Jake Gatewood was 1-3 with a walk and Cooper Hummel drew 2 walks. With 2 outs in the 9th, Cooper Hummel drew a walk and Weston Wilson singled. Corey Ray then took a called 3rd strike after a long at bat to end the game. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log

Mudcats win series opener in thrilling fashion Stokes, Diaz and Gatewood led the way in 9-8 victory at Buies Creek By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 31, 2017 11:53 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/1/6/231792016/cuts/16x9_StokesThrowing_00sp8caf_ngc2op3c.jpg Troy Stokes Jr. playing for the 2017 Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) A relay throw from Luis Aviles cut down the tying run at the plate for the 3rd and final out to preserve the victory for the Mudcats. The debut of Trey Supak (4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) did not go well. He took 85 pitches to make it through 4 innings. Quintin Torres-Costa (3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K) was also a bit shaky at first as he walked 2 of the first 4 batters he faced, both of whom scored. He then ran off 7 straight outs and ended up with his 5th win of the year. Jon Olczak (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K) worked the 8th for his second "hold" of the year. Nate Griep picked up his 10th save by recording the last out on the Aviles relay throw. Troy Stokes Jr. (1-2, HR, 3 BB, 2 R, 3 RBI) led the Mudcats' offense today. Isan Diaz (1-5, HR) hit his 9th home run of the year. Jake Gatewood (4-5, 2 2B) had a big game. As mentioned above in this thread, he now has 20 doubles at the end of May. Luis Aviles was 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI's. Trent Clark was 0-2 but reached 3 times on walks (in consecutive innings) and one of the outs was a long fly to the warning track in left. Weston Wilson, making a bid for 3TO status, walked twice and struck out 3 times. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Trailing 3-1: Carolina Top of the 3rd Weston Wilson walks. Corey Ray walks. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) 6 errors and another 14 strike outs today. Cody Ponce (5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K) could only go 5 innings today, taking 84 pitches to get through those innings. Yes, 4 of the runs were unearned but really, he was hit pretty hard today. Eric Hanhold then followed, entering the game with a .339 BAA. He gave up 3 hits and a run. Wuilder Rodriguez finished the last two innings flawlessly lowering his ERA to 1.17. Corey Ray and Jake Gatewood each struck out 3 times in 4 at bats. It was Ray's turn to bicker with the umpire today. Gatewood's batting average is now down to .293 and his OPS is now below .900. Luis Aviles and Carlos Belonis each had 2 hits in 4 at bats. Aviles homered and had one error in the field. Belonis had two errors and a double. Trent Clark threw out a runner at home. Pelicans run away with 8-2 win versus Mudcats Troy Stokes Jr. hit a two-run HR for the Mudcats in Saturday's loss By Gregory Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 27, 2017 9:03 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/4/9/6/226387496/cuts/16x9_CoreyRay3_mvop8jq5_io0r85xb.jpg (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Conor Harber threw 9 straight balls to start this game. Eventually, he walked 3 men, all of whom scored, in the first inning and that is all the Pelicans would need to win this game. 3 relievers followed but the Mudcats were never able to come back. Troy Stokes Jr. hit a 2 run home run for the only 2 runs of the game for the Mudcats. Jake Gatewood broke up a perfect game with a single to lead off the 5th. Burnes goes to 5-0; Mudcats win 5-3 vs. Pelicans Corey Ray was 2-for-4 with a lead off home run on Friday night By Carolina Mudcats | May 26, 2017 11:11 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/8/6/230600086/cuts/16x9_Burnes3_kxjnjjqz_bwm0a01f.jpg Corbin Burnes (6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 6 K) got the start and the win. He struggled a bit with command at times today, especially in the 3rd inning when he walked one and hit 2 batters. He did not allow another runner after that though. Eric Hanhold (2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) worked the 7th and 8th. The two runs he gave up were after back-to-back errors by Isan Diaz and Lucas Erceg. Nate Griep came in for the save. With two out in the 9th, Jesse Hodges got on board with a swinging bunt and the Pelicans then pinch hit the Cubs' top prospect Eloy Jiminez, who sat out the rest of the game. Jiminez walked on a close pitch but Griep then retired the next hitter on a ground ball to end the game. Griep leads the Carolina League in saves with 8. The surging Corey Ray (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) led off the game for the Mudcats with a towering home run. Weston Wilson (2-3, RBI) had the other multi-hit game for the Mudcats. He also took an elbow to the face from Pelicans' right fielder Eddy Martinez when a throw to first was off line. He stayed in the game after lying on the ground for a few seconds. Lucas Erceg, Trent Clark and Isan Diaz all had a double in the game. Luis Aviles added to his league leading stolen base total to get his 14th of the year. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log This inning gave the Mudcats the lead for good (I couldn't believe how shallow they were playing Trent Clark): Carolina Bottom of the 2nd Lucas Erceg doubles (8) on a line drive to center fielder Robert Garcia. Trent Clark doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Eddy Martinez. Lucas Erceg scores. Trent Clark to 3rd on the throw. Luis Aviles grounds out, shortstop Andruw Monasterio to first baseman Adonis Paula. Max McDowell flies out to center fielder Robert Garcia. Weston Wilson singles on a line drive to right fielder Eddy Martinez. Trent Clark scores. With Corey Ray batting, wild pitch by Ryan Kellogg, Weston Wilson to 2nd. Corey Ray grounds out, shortstop Andruw Monasterio to first baseman Adonis Paula. There is certainly no truth to the rumor that the Pelicans are planning to change their name to the "Chickens" in order to bring Myrtle Beach into compliance with the parent club's rainout policy.

(NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) For the second straight game the Mudcats bats couldn't do much and they fail to pick up much on Bouie's Creek, which dropped a double header to Salem earlier. Freddie Peralta (5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) started and took the loss. He gave up his 6th gopher ball of the year, second only to Cody Ponce's 7. As mentioned above, Wuilder Rodriguez (3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K) worked a mostly flawless 3 innings in relief. Corey Ray went 2-4 and stole his 10th base of the season. Luis Aviles went 2-4 with a double. Troy Stokes Jr. had a double. Jake Gatewood, playing 3rd for the 2nd time in this series, was shut out for hits in the series but did draw a walk today. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Cody Ponce (7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K) picked up his 5th win of the season in this 7 inning complete game. A 2 run home run in the 6th were the only runs he gave up. Luis Aviles was 2-3 with the only multi-hit game for the Mudcats today. Cooper Hummel (1-2, 2B, BB) also contributed along with the big blow, a grand slam by Isan Diaz in the 5th inning which, for all intents and purposes, put this game away. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log The 6 run 5th inning which put the game away: Carolina Top of the 5th Trent Clark singles on a ground ball to shortstop Josh Morgan. Troy Stokes Jr. Jake Gatewood grounds out, shortstop Josh Morgan to first baseman Josh Altmann. Lucas Erceg grounds out, shortstop Josh Morgan to first baseman Josh Altmann. From today's game notes we have BABIP for various players: Aviles .327, Belonis .341, Clark .326, Diaz .321, Erceg .220, Gatewood .418, Ghelfi .378, McDowell .259, Ray .386, Stokes .244 and Wilson .328. Erceg and Ray stand out for me. Greg Young mentioned a couple of games ago that Erceg was in the bottom 3 in the whole league in this category so maybe he's hitting in some bad luck. Ray has been hitting a lot better lately and it seems to be reflected in this number.

They have started in Kinston and Jake Gatewood is at 3rd today.

Carolina's game with Down East has been postponed. Doesn't Down East mean "Maine", that is down wind and east from Boston to a sailor? I guess Kinston is maybe down east from Jacksonville but I don't think you can sail there.

Hummel's huge day leads Mudcats to 7-5 win versus Down East Cooper Hummel fell a single shy of the cycle in his 2017 season debut on Thursday By Greg Young / Carolina Mudcats | May 18, 2017 4:01 PM ET http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/6/0/231029560/cuts/16x9_Hummel51717c_5cd699wu_2zzq170p.jpg Cooper Hummel finished a single shy of the cycle while going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, a home run, two runs and three RBIs in his 2017 debut. He also caught five pop outs, picked off a runner at first and reached base safely in all four of his at bats. (NIKOLAUS - Carolina Mudcats) Cooper Hummel-Superstar. Well, for today anyway. 3 for 3 with a walk. He also picked a runner off base and caught 4 popups, which sounds routine but isn't always on this club. All three hits were hammered. The double was off the wall in left, triple went to deep right center and the home run to straight away right. Overshadowed were some other fine performances - Troy Stokes Jr. (2-4, 2B, HR), Trent Clark (1-2, HR, BB, Sac Fly), and Weston Wilson (3-4, 2B, and playing 2B today). Trent Clark's home run was just to the right of the center field area. When it was hit, I thought there was no chance it would go out but, of course, it did. The balls were carrying very well today. He really packs a pop for a guy his size. Cody Ponce went 7 innings to pick up his 4th win of the season. He scattered 7 hits and 1 walk and struck out 4. He threw 86 pitches, 60 for strikes, and had an 8/2 ground out to fly out ratio. Eric Hanhold worked a scoreless 8th. Quintin Torres-Costa gave up a pair of gopher balls in the 9th before Nate Griep came in to notch the save. The Mudcats were going to bring in Nate Griep for the 9th when Cooper Hummel hit a 2 run home run in the bottom of the 8th. Then they sat down Nate Griep and went with Torres-Costa. He may not have had enough time to warm up but it's probably still a good gamble. Carolina Box Score Carolina Game Log Carolina Bottom of the 3rd Cooper Hummel doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Arroyo. Carlos Belonis grounds out, third baseman Josh Altmann to first baseman Tyler Sanchez. With Trent Clark batting, Cooper Hummel advances to 3rd on a balk. Carolina Bottom of the 4th Isan Diaz doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder LeDarious Clark. Jake Gatewood reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Josh Altmann. Lucas Erceg grounds into a double play, second baseman Luis La O to shortstop Josh Morgan to first baseman Tyler Sanchez. Isan Diaz to 3rd. Jake Gatewood out at 2nd. Troy Stokes Jr. homers (4) on a fly ball to left field. Isan Diaz scores. Weston Wilson singles on a ground ball to center fielder Carlos Arroyo.
