  1. Rob Wooten makes the MLB All-Star team?! http://m.brewers.mlb.com/news/article/100801102/mlb-roster-for-japan-all-star-series
  2. Michael Strong with a "strong" outing. 6 hitters 4 K's, no baserunners.
  3. Rough start for Brooks. He gave up a 4 spot in the 1st inning including a 2 out, 3 run homerun. Went 3 innings and retired the rest of the hitters in order after the big homerun. It seemed like a few were on hard hit balls though. Only 2 hits given up.
  4. Confirmed on the D'Backs end: http://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/mlb/diamondbacks/2014/10/31/arizona-diamondbacks-scouting-director-ray-montgomery-leaves-team/18287101/
  5. LaRoche was awful against left handers last year. Splits: .280/.390/.501 .204/.284/.336 They could use Rogers in a platoon although his splits were pretty even last year. But do you pay big bucks for a platoon player?
  6. Since Vitters put up much better numbers at the same team in 2012, you have to wonder if his lack of performance last year was injury related. I doubt the Brewers go for it though since they resigned Taylor Green.
  7. Rough outing for Tyler Wagner. You may not want to check today's boxscore.
  8. Jack Z. got some very early high picks where nearly everbody was available. Seid didn't have that advantage. Seid's first year was hampered by the fact that he had less than a year to prepare for the draft and retool the scouting system after Jack Z. left. Second, the one draft Seid made that yielded Jungmann and Bradley I'm sure the organization made a conscious choice to try to get college pitchers who they felt could advance quickly so that the organization didn't have to keep buying expensive free agent and traded for pitchers to compete. He did the best he could under that circumstance. I feel Bruce Seid was on the right track in the guys he has taken the past couple of years. Every team misses on some picks (including the Cardinals). Still, I don't mind if the new scouting director comes from outside but they need to get this right. A failed scouting director will put the Brewers years behind.
  9. Story on the best minor league franchises: http://www.smartasset.com/blog/housing/americas-best-minor-league-baseball-towns/ Timberrattlers come in at #5 and Helena at 24.
  10. UW recruit out of the DC area: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/recruiting-insider/wp/2014/10/15/river-hills-charlie-thomas-iv-commits-to-wisconsin-basketball/ Looks like a typical Bo Ryan type of guy.
  11. A pair of doubles each by Tyrone Taylor and Shawn Zarraga. Scoreless inning by Michael Strong. http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2014_10_11_srrwin_gddwin_1&t=g_box&sid=l119
  12. Interesting. OF Clint Coulter assigned to Glendale Desert Dogs. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/winterleagues/transactions/?league=afl#month=10&year=2014
  13. I listened to many Brevard County games last year. The announcers stated more than once that scouts (not Brewers' scouts) said that Arcia was Major League ready last year. He's solid in the field and can hit some. He also showed he can play 2nd. Please don't spend scarce resources on a position that is covered. There is an outside chance of Arcia making the Brewers out of spring training. I wouldn't expect that but who knows? He may be the best option as a middle infield utility guy/right hand 2nd base platoon guy. As long as he would get sufficient at bats, I might even favor that. It is likely he will get another minor league year. Yadiel Rivera is also out there. He is a spectacular fielder, although with perhaps too many errors. He has some power which should show in Huntsville/Biloxi next year. That wouldn't show up in Space Coast stadium. In short, there is no need to move SS just yet, in my opinion.
  14. Tyrone Taylor leading off has tripled and walked. One hit for Nick Ramirez and Brooks Hall has pitched a scoreless inning. Pretty good start to the AFL.
  15. Wisconsin is 2nd in athletic department revenue? http://www.businessinsider.com/texas-revenue-college-sports-2014-9
  16. Who knows turborickey, you may see Lara next year, Harrison? That would be fun.
  17. My concern with Colorado Springs is not with evaluating players. I'm sure the Brewers can discount these park effects as well as anyone. It's going from high altitude in Colorado to lower altitude in Milwaukee which would be an adjustment for pitchers especially. The fast ball will be slightly less fast in Milwaukee and the ball will break more in the denser air. Will that lead to control problems for pitchers moving between Colorado Springs and Milwaukee? Rather not have to deal with such issues which were no problem coming from Nashville.
  18. I looked up Braun's stats after at least 1 day of rest: .271/.352/.532 which are still pretty good stats although not up to his standards. (Someone may want to check my work). Total for all PA's: .268/.325/.455. This kind of confirms my feeling that Braun should have been given more rest during the season. He seemed to hit better with rest. This also has the effect of keeping bench players up to playing speed so that they are ready when needed. Roenicke also had a tendency to overwork pitchers (14 appearances by Thornburg in April?). Smith was also overworked early in the season. You have to remember the length of the season. I'm not really in favor of firing Roenicke but I sincerely hope he does some introspection over the winter especially about these work issues.
  19. He will have to make more throws at 1B than in OF. Don't think throwing is the problem anyway.
  20. Gallardo has thrown 1284 innings to Fiers' 212. If you include the minors it's Gallardo 396 to Fiers' 483. There is a lot of mileage on Gallardo's arm which is not on Fiers'. Therefore, I think age is less relevant here.
  21. 'Stache, Major league payroll is a very poor metric for financial strength. You need to look at revenues. Houston has a low payroll but that doesn't mean they're in a weaker position than the Brewers. The Brewers can ill afford bad contracts but they're almost irrelevant to the Yankees. Payroll doesn't tell you how much is spent on scouting, etc. Notice that the big money teams are still getting the big free agents out of Japan and Cuba. Progress has been made but the Brewers are still at a huge disadvantage versus most teams financially. People need to stop blaming Melvin for years before he got here. I'm pretty neutral on Melvin but it is highly likely that his replacement will be worse.
  22. Expectations should be realistic. There are 30 teams so in a perfectly fair world we could expect a World Series title once every 30 years and a World Series appearance every 15 years. The world isn't perfectly fair. Other teams have much more resources than do the Brewers. So add a few years between happy results based on that. Yes, the Brewers have been unlucky but it's not far from the probabilities you might get by chance alone. Melvin hasn't done that bad. The Brewers were a bad hand by Braun away from the playoff this year (assuming they don't make it). If they had gotten in who knows? The Cardinals won a World Series they had no business winning (Suppan anyone?). The Brewers have already gone away from the slugger concept in their drafting. Other than Coulter and Roache they really don't have many slugging prospects. I have a friend who is a Red Sox fan and he always used to tell me his grandfather was despondent because the Red Sox would never win the World Series in his lifetime. I think he did manage to squeak it in before he passed though. Here's hoping.
  23. The Packers should immediately start doing oppo research and leak information on violators as the playoffs begin. They should research their own players and drop any that might be questionable. They might get inside information on Russell Wilson from his UW days which appears to be one of the few ways the Pack could beat the Seahawks.
  24. According to today's JS, the Brewers offered to buy an ownership interest and include an exhibition Brewers game in Nashville. I don't know what else they could have done. There is obviously bad blood between Melvin and the Nashville ownership now. By not announcing this earlier, Nashville really limited the Brewers' choices which was unfair.
  25. Minor league numbers: Mark Reynolds: .279/.360/.522 Matt Clark: .286/.362/.503 Jason Rogers: .287/.367/.457 Hunter M.: .272/.321/.478 Reynolds clearly has the most power but he's also past his prime. Clark was older when producing his numbers for the most part. Hunter Morris is the worst in getting on base. I could see a platoon of Rogers and Clark or even Rogers and Morris. If they have Ramirez next year, Rogers could back him up as well.
