  1. "Redskins" is not a derogatory term. Link to origin of the term "Redskins": http://anthropology.si.edu/goddard/redskin.pdf The team was originally in Boston before moving to Washington and its coach happened to be Native American. Presumably he did not object to this tribute to him as a coach. I have seen references to Native Americans being called "Redskin" during the era of Discovery because of the red paint that particular tribes habitually used. Is that derogatory? Really, this is an issue which has been seized by activists seeking to promote their causes. Maybe the NFL will force the Redskins to change their name eventually but it will have nothing to do with reality but only with public relations. Disclaimer: I despise the 'Skins for other reasons.
  2. Thanks to all link reporters. It was informative and enjoyable again this year.
  3. Braun should probably not be playing at all and as soon as the Brewers are eliminated, he won't be. Dustin Pedroia, who is having similar hand issues, has already been shut down. There are enough at bats for everybody if RR plays it right (which I admit he has done a poor job of).
  4. Sports leagues should leave this up to the criminal justice system, which is set up to handle these issues while affording accused players their constitutional rights. If somebody has a beef in the Rice case, it should be with the DA who handled it, not Roger Goodell. Mobs of angry sports fans are not the forum for justice ordinarily.
  5. Bob Suter dies at 57. Former "Miracle on Ice" star: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/badgers/bob-suter-former-uw-and-miracle-on-ice-star-dies-at-age-57-b99348270z1-274531151.html
  6. Suter retired the first 5 hitters and then got hit by a comebacker. He gave up a home run on the first pitch after that. He kept going but was ineffective for the most part. Marzec was not good and Shackleford gave up a home run to the first man he faced. That's when I gave up but it looks like they at least made it close.
  7. Interesting story in the Atlantic, of all places, on baseball becoming too boring due to the influence of camera technology on umpires: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/09/baseball-is-boring-and-this-camera/379443/ Blaming low scoring on a lowered strike zone.
  8. Stars win. Combined 3 hitter. Goforth went the last 3 so he will probably be unavailable tomorrow. Brent Suter will be the starter. If there is any player symbolic of the Stars' season, it has to be Suter. Tremendous first half followed by a mediocre second half. He will have to string something together tomorrow. It has been a real pleasure to listen to Tyler Wagner's games this year. He works quickly, throws strikes and gets ground balls. Yet he still gets his share of strikeouts. He and Taylor Williams have been a revelation to me this year although I know some of you were touting both at the start of the season and before.
  9. Stars go up 4-0 although they had 2 guys out at 3rd in the 8th. Robinson Diaz tripped over the base as he was trying to score on Tyrone Taylor's single.
  10. Dominant performance for Tyler Wagner through 6. Stars not doing much better offensively though. Pinch hitting for TW in the 7th. I don't know, he's only thrown 63 pitches. Hopefully, the pen can get the job done.
  11. Bradley is pushing 150 IP. The Brewers may be shutting him down. Ah, I didn't notice that. I'm sure you're right. Just seemed odd, Bradley out of the pen and Strong, who has been in the pen, as the next starter.
  12. Heck of a game from Austin Ross but why is Bradley pitching from the pen? I would have thought he'd be one of the starters.
  13. Any word on whether or not he will have LaRussa "dusted"? I'd like to see Gibby high five someone on that!
  14. Is it too soon to talk about Bruce's replacement? Joe Ferrone is the national crosschecker for the Brewers. Interestingly, he once played for Perugia in the Italian league. Maybe our friend Calle ran across him at some point? Bruce Seid was an inside promotion but that doesn't mean they will go that way again.
  15. MLB link: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mil/brewers-mourn-passing-of-director-of-scouting-bruce-seid?ymd=20140903&content_id=92880014&vkey=news_mil Terrible news. I also think Bruce was really coming around in the draft. He will be hard to replace and whoever does it next will be behind the eight ball the first year.
  16. Coulter will get 1 more at bat to try for the club HR record outright.
  17. Huge day for Coulter so far. Pitchers not so much. Ties Rattlers record for HRs in a season. Now batting in the 7th.----Single. Nuts.
  18. Not to steer the thread away from Monte, but the Brewers have some lesser players who are sporting high OBPs too. Nathan Orf at .388 who has led the FSL through some of the season, Michael Reed at .396 and Taylor Brennan at .368. There do seem to be fewer power guys in the system than we are used to though. Hopefully, some of the power guys like Denson and a few others can keep up the OBP while hitting for a bit more power.
  19. Wei-Chung Wang interview on the Manatees' pregame interview today. Interestingly, he is better at Spanish than English. Orf in centerfield!?
  20. Apparently, the Brewers put in a claim for Justin Morneau but it was rejected. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/writer/jon-heyman/24684403/brewers-won-morneau-claim-and-made-offer-but-hes-staying-in-colorado
  21. He's 6'3", 200 pounds at 18. I'd be shocked if he fails to hit for power at some point. Gordon and Hamilton will never have that size.
  22. Michael Reed is a late scratch today. Macias to right, Orf to 3rd and the real A-Rod to 2nd. I didn't catch the reason for the scratch if one was given. He did miss time with an oblique this year.
  23. Lakeland has given up on their pitching staff. Manatees approaching triple figures in men on base. (Almost) Roache was the only Manatee without a hit but he did have 2 walks. Still alive for the playoffs.
  24. Johnny Davis with another leaping catch against the wall. Making a habit out of it.
  25. Well there has been a unique combination of circumstance that has allowed me to listen to more games than normal this year. Retirement for one. We'll see what happens.
