  1. Two reasons: 1.) the players want to make a lot of money 2.) teams got smarter and don't want to pay them so much
  2. AL East: Brewers AL Central: Brewers AL West: Brewers ALWC1: Brewers ALWC2: Brewers NL East: Brewers NL Central: Brewers NL West: Brewers NLWC1: Brewers NLWC2: Cubs NLCS: Brewers over Cubs by a combined score of 179-0 World Series: Brewers win WS MVP: Jacob Nottingham
  3. To say the least. Fans will talk themselves into thinking we got an ace because Stearns gave him a big deal when the reality is he hasn't been good since 2014. No one would sign this guy to a big money long term deal unless you were super desperate.
  4. I think I agree with you but does anyone have any data or factual evidence that many moves occur so close to the season? I am trying to remember previous years but do not remember a lot of movement other than people being let go and others trying to pick them up and stash them. Generally your choices for the 25 man come from the guys you brought to camp now. But this is a really odd year for baseball in general and the Brewers specifically so there is a strong likelihood there will be moves before opening day. The roster currently makes no sense so there have to be moves of some kind.
  5. No GM can make the call on a 9 digit contract. That has to come from the owner. Boras is right to go to the decision maker for such deals.
  6. I'd think Archer is our number one target. Arrieta is too expensive and Cobb isn't the guy for where we want to go in 2018. I'm guessing Phillips, Hiura, Burnes assuming Santana is not in their plans and if HHs tweet is to be believed. An Archer and Lynn pairing would save a lot of wear and tear on our bullpen.
  7. All along I wondered how people thought Broxton Aguilar would get something when scooter got nothing. I get scooter was arby and not free but scraps are scraps. These 2 are scraps. Don't get me started on releasing Scooter...... But you're right. Broxton and Aguilar are nice little stories but they aren't guys you "shop" for anything meaningful. Unlike the Scooter situation where we still haven't replaced him, we don't need a back up 1B or CF now or in the next few years so while it makes sense to try and get something for them, the reality is the return won't be much.
  8. I care. A lot. None of these options are good options but the team is going all in now so what else is there to do? We aren't positioned to seriously challenge for a WS spot so they will absolutely be adding one or two SP and they will absolutely over pay to bring him or them on. All come with severe risks with long term contracts or massive prospect costs. My attitude is I will enjoy the ride in 2018 and possibly 2019 and I will worry about 2020 in 2020.
  9. Broxton had a 645 second half OPS and Aguilar wasn't much better. If they are being shopped I can't imagine it's for a whole lot. That would mean they are very serious about Braun to 1B and so far I've just seen that as speculation and TBD?
  10. How many pitchers over 30 in the non ped era have ever put up 5 quality years in a row?
  11. Not true. I like him at 3/45 or so. 5 years which is today's rumor is insane.
  12. Darvish is 31 and just got a 6 year deal Darvish had Tommy John surgery Cobb had the blod clot and rib injury in 2011 and was very good after that. His concussion was on a line drive to head. Really injury prone Concussions are progressive, how he received it is irrelevant . He is not a 5 year candidate for many reasons. I'm really not sure any pitcher is for a small market team other than the super elite. Arrieta is hardly an ideal 5 year guy either but if you have to wager on one being able to fulfill at least 4 of the 5 years, Arrieta is the clear best bet.
  13. Giving 5 year deals to 30 plus year olds is what ends GMs careers, especially to a small market team. Cobb has had TJS, a concussion, a blood clot, and had a rib removed. 5 year deal? Yeah no. If 5 years is a must, the only guy you'd consider is Arrieta.
  14. Arrieta is a clear decline candidate but if Cobb asks for 5 years you laugh then go for Arrieta.
  15. They just DFAd their best player. It's a fire sale
  16. Exactly. No half measures.
  17. I like Anderson and Davies a lot. Remember the Brewers didn't fall about down the stretch because of their starting pitching, they did because of their offense. Nelson who I have always liked, is a serious question mark coming back from that specific injury though. That's something they need to hedge and he was truly our ace. Cobb is more likely to be the 2017 version than the 2014 version based on age alone so you can't count on him to replace 2017 Nelson. That's why it will be Cobb who is just a guy and someone else who is more closely going to replace Nelson's innings last year.
  18. You are clearly looking at this through a very specific lens. If Cobb came back from surgery and was in 2014 form, he'd be out of our price range. Probably looking at a Darvish contract. As others have noted, he was a decent pitcher in his first year back from TJ with his best pitch not working properly. Also moving from loaded AL East division, hitter friendly parks, with DH to NL central no DH. I'm not saying you don't sign him, you just dont sign him like it's the 2014 version because that is unrealistic for many reasons.
  19. Regardless of his spot in a rotation, the point is he is a guy who was last a good pitcher in 2014. His most recent year had a 4.16 FIP. He is not a workhorse. In other words what is is a nice 30 year old pitcher with a history of injuries. What he isn't is a 5 year big money pitcher.
  20. Those years were 2012-2014. He is 100% a 3/4 in 2018 until he proves otherwise.
  21. They have Chase Anderson at 9-11 and a 4.76. Archer is at 12-11 with a 3.49. Those projections amount to a hill of beans. I think the point is Cobb is just a guy who no one would realistically see him as an anchor to a rotation (4.16 FIP) so a 5 year deal isn't something one would expect. I'd definitely take him as our 3/4 but never at a big money long term deal. Too many arm problems and not enough upside to see him beyond a nice pitcher to have.
  22. No one is offering Cobb 5 years. Fwiw steamer has him at 8-8 4.43 ERA in 135 innings.
  23. The Arrieta narrative isn't valid because JO is far cheaper and younger.
  24. Jake for nothing would have been a great pick up and at the very least a cheap insurance policy. No doubt about it. Much better than Yo and Miley. I am assuming like some of the other posters that Stearns passed on this obviously great trade because he is working on something bigger.
  25. They clearly had little interest in bringing back Arrieta. They were only trying to drive up his price to others by even remotely suggesting otherwise.
