  1. Well, I don't think banking on 3 young pitchers was him trying to outsmart everyone. Small market team, cheap in house young pitching of their own. Yea, that's the model and we all have wanted it for years. He tried that, two of the guys flopped and the other just got hurt. If you wanted you can rip on for poor evaluations or hiring of proper coaches regarding two of those SPs, but it wasn't out of some crazy strategy that led to this. He went with young, highish ceiling prospects and two flopped. Here we are.
  2. Don't' forget he had no options either. So picking up his contract would've limited their options even more on the up and down moves they tend to make so often and is a part of their strategy. He'd have been locked in all year.
  3. I would by no means think ATL is unbeatable, you have a great chance in that one. Then you cross your fingers the WC knocks of LAD, it's baseball. Crazy stuff happens all the time. You have to try when you're this close, MLB post season is by far the flukiest and most likely for underdogs winning of any non one game playoff system
  4. I'd take my chances on a Lauer type guy. Competent now, still controlled for years, young with upside. Maybe they have a 40 man crunch coming too so need to move guys. Yates/Lauer combo helps the team a lot and wouldn't think it would cost the farm.
  5. Kirby Yates? Controlled through next year but is like 32 years old so it shouldn't cost the farm. Only other reliever that seems to be doing ok after quick glancing of stats is 35 year old Crag Stammen. I didn't dig on starters as I thought they were all young and therefore controllable (so why would SD get rid of). I could easily be wrong on that though
  6. Just saw that too. Honestly I'm not a fan. I love the aspect of playing home and home though, full credit to all parties for getting that done, especially Bama for coming up here. In 2024 we also play at Mich and at OSU, plus PSU. Then play OSU MSU in 2025. I think all these fans crying for years about tougher non conference will be singing a different tune in the near future as we start having more and more 8-4 years due to it. First, I'd have preferred to play LSU. You at least have a chance then and LSU gameday is #1. But really I'd prefer the tier below that so you're playing a legit good non conf game but you actually could/should win based on home/away. Say your Ole Miss, Miss ST, Washington, SCAR types. Or, call me crazy, just play the VA Tech games you had scheduled. Legit good tough game but at least it's a fair level playing field. I know Saban will likely be retired by then so Bama could be much different, but I would expect them to keep that machine rolling after him just fine (poaching Smart or Dabo or someone similar). I'd just avoid the almost for sure L, schedule a good game but one that you could win.
  7. Just taking him out of the AL East will help big time. Seems like a good target to me based on team control and that he has basic competency as it is to go with still a lot of upside. All depends on what you have to give up but one would think they can't be demanding too much.
  8. Small correction, Michigan is playing at Madison. I generally agree our best case in that scenario is 4-2 and that's even unlikely. But not sure I'd agree with you thinking we would beat Mich on the road but lose to Iowa at home (though you were thinking of the Mich game incorrectly). Remember the bloodbath Mich gave us last year? If I was picking, I'd pick Michigan to win the Big Ten as they get OSU at home this year. UM has their QB back and OSU doesn't, new coaches at OSU and all that. If I was picking I'd say we lose to OSU, Mich. Then hope to get the rest but will lose at least 1 of them, with my pick being losing at Nebraska on the road. 3-3 in that stretch for a 9-3 season. But don't forget they play at MN this year and that's no longer a gimmie. I think the over/under is at 8 and it seems a correct line.
  9. Interesting idea on the Nova/Colome thing. That's the type of move I expect from them. I just can't see them punting on the year being 1 game out but also shouldn't be "going all in" or anything like that with this current team. Getting an ok innings eater pitcher and some OK BP help without giving up any legit prospects and see what happens.
  10. Yea you now have him to come in for Aguilar later in the game when the leftys go out, then you have him to start vs the righty, then have him for the DH games. It was either get this extra bat up just in case you need him it this series or bring up a garbage time reliever. Seems an easy choice.
  11. I'd also guess Houston could come up with a few near MLB ready prospects. Alvarez would be out but a guy like Tucker and I think they have a few close pitchers, I wanna say one got hurt though this year. It's such an odd trade that I don't see it working for anyone. Basically the common issue that what we value him for (and types of players we'd want back) would not match up with what the acquiring teams want to give up.
  12. Yup I went through that with catchers the other day. It was funny the only team needing one is LAD where he left, but they are going to cruise into the playoffs and don't need it. Yankees C on the DL but it's not serious, they're running away into the playoffs so don't need anyone. Also, you'll probably be surprised if you look up the Indians catcher's stats, he's actually doing really well. So I've kind of written Grandal off as a trade candidate. For Moose, you're correct that you're not getting a big time prospect haul. But, I do think he has upped his value this year. First, he proved he can adequately play 2B so that opens up many more options. Second, he's frankly just playing and hitting better. His approach to hit oppo is better. Less of the HR or Popout outcome only. Still, you're not getting a haul but you might get a few guys back who at least have a chance to make the bigs. So maybe for us or we could flip them elsewhere for relief help or trade next year for help at the deadline if needed. My guess is though they view him as such a good guy that they would like to resign again for next year so I don't think they'll do him like that, though it probably is the technical correct shrewd move. After that, we don't really have much to sell off that we'd be willing to give.
  13. Well, to be fair, look who they have played out of the ASB...the Reds and Pirates(twice). They won't be in first for long(and will fade) once they start playing real teams like with the next few series they have coming up with the Cubs, A's, Astros and Dodgers. Goodbye Cardinals. I mean we've just laid an egg vs teams like Pit, Reds, Giants, Sea, SD and Miami. Generally speaking I'd probably agree with what you say but it's not like the team doesn't have talent. Basically it's tough to knock them for doing exactly what we couldn't do. If we'd have beat those teams we'd have a 6 game lead.
  14. Just can't see anyway they can sell as long as they don't get swept here. A shrewd Moose trade to the AL due to having Shaw as a replacement I could see but I can't see them punting while 3 games out. Also, that Pads trade is ridiculous. Honestly, you should probably trade Hader straight up for Tatis if offered just out of everyday SS is more valuable than a reliever and he is/was a 'mega prospect' type who's performing immediately. He's the type you get and try to immediately lock him up to buy out a couple years of arby. Let alone if they add in a current proven starter and two other prospects then it's not even close.
  15. Probably unrealistic but I was going through White Sox and Pitt as we seem to do business with them a lot. Vasquez would fit a common goal here of controllable cost controlled players, he's on a 4 year deal with the first two years really cheap then two team option years at 10 mil. He would likely cost a lot but he sure would be a weapon and allow Hader to go back to the swing role like last year. Reds closer Iglesias also having a bit of a down here and is controlled at 2/18 after this year. Due to being a bit pricey maybe that keeps his prospect cost down. I guess trying to look bigger and longer term a bit on those guys. My guess is they go cheaper one year guys that don't cost us much in prospect capital, guys like Greg Holland.
  16. Yup, if no one else gets hurt (and assume Shaw does well) you can DL Thames after the Oak series and then give him a few games in the minors and all of a sudden you're 2 weeks from September. Or send Shaw down again for a bit and the 10 day rule to keep in the minors gets you to 2.5 weeks away.
  17. 3 DH games next week too. I couldn't watch the last few games but I saw mentions on twitter there could be a small Thames injury going on? So maybe he gets some ABs there as well.
  18. Yup. Kinda surprising MP is #15 in that considering it's viewed so hitter friendly. We all know Cincy is considered hitter friendly pretty much since it opened. It was one of the things that surprised me when he left. Essentially I thought, 'wait he's leaving to take over a bad staff in a bangbox park, what?'. Then I read how he's from the area and it made sense.
  19. Yup, starters have been fine. Davies has been strong since his slump. Offense should be fine going forward. Get that relief situation solidified and go on a run
  20. Hiura's short compact swing is tough to think of similar ones. Trout is the best I can think of, maybe Jeter. obviously good comps there. Not a lot of people have similar swings Let's just end this now.
  21. yes Saldino did hit that very well. I think one of his earlier outs was struck well too but still not producing. FYI, I just checked on Perez. HE's at .189 with a 520 OPS in AAA so far. Only 9 games and 37 ABs but he hasn't gotten out of his funk yet so they'll probably just stick with Saladino for a bit. But maybe we can start playing him less please
  22. Freeman is first up. So Claudio for that and if he doesn't get him, yank him. Need to start viewing him as a lefty specialist. Would be nice to try and get through without using Hader or at least only using for 1 inning so he can be available tomorrow
  23. That 3rd time through thing playing out right in front of our eyes. Ours pulled at trouble, their's left in
  24. Also, there shouldn't be another regular season great record in the East that forces them to push to 60 wins for home court. So more room for load management on Giannis and whoever else needs it.
  25. Great sign for Shaw of course. But also maybe a bit reminder slow down a bit to folks here pushing AAA guys a bit much lately due to their stats down there, another bit of info showing how much different and easier it is. Unfortunately for Shaw there really isn't much they can do right now. He's really just going to have to keep crushing it down there until an injury happens or we get to September. But it does keep a Moose trade option more available if the team struggles or if somehow it's needed.
