  1. A single small market team could try and close the gap, because large markets won’t be challenged that much to care. However, if every small market team did it, you would just move the goalposts. Large markets have PLENTY of ammo in the bank account to raise the payroll ceiling if small markets want to challenge them. All it will cause is payroll inflation. Small market is spending more just to be in the same spot as before. Instead of us spending $10mil on Wade Miley we will spend $20mil. Same result, just spending more.
  2. Yes, let’s ignore the logic that a large market can spend $300mil and it still be nowhere near total profits the team brings in, but a small market can’t spend $300mil without bankrupting the team and putting money out of their own bank account into the payroll. Which: A) Makes literally no sense B) Is actually almost impossible because teams (especially small markets) are rarely owned by a singular person and Attanasio rallying the entire ownership group to agree to zero profits is quite unlikely to happen. C) Attanasio has a net worth of $700mil and would have to completely bankrupt himself to “take one for the team” and afford Ohtani.
  3. Shohei Ohtani is the greatest baseball player in history…but I am trying to actually believe he is worth $70mil. 29 years old isn’t all that young to be starting this contract out and he has been made of glass pitching wise. If he was a workhorse with the glove and bat I could see it…but yikes considering his fragile arm. Crazy stuff. I’m honestly shocked he blew past the record AVV like he did.
  4. That isn't my point though. When those options are cheaper, say $17mil it reduces the risk of the deal overall. Say he ends up a maybe just a really solid non All-Star starter. If those options are cheap or market rate there is a lot of value in having him for just a year or two without a huge additional commitment. Think of it like being able to have Grandal for a year versus a huge 5 year deal. Or, they make him tradable and valuable on the trade market. At $25mil, those really aren't that great unless he is a star. Not saying the deal is bad because of it...just disappointed the Brewers ended up with some crappy options compared to previous deals tended to have.
  5. I have to be honest, the fact we had to give him $25mil options is really disappointing. Often times in these deals, the options will be comparable to what they make at the end of the extension (about $17mil in Chourio's case). Thus, they are very likely to be picked up and possibly still a bargain. Yah, $25mil in 8 years will be quite a bit different...but that is a steep price for those options to be. Not as team friendly as one would hope for them to be.
  6. So basically he got his option money plus the chance at a little extra through innings-pitched incentives. "My son said I had to play for the Brewers or retire," said Miley, whose wife is expecting another son in February. "So that was it." Happy Meals in the clubhouse from now on...win the kids over and the players gotta stay.
  7. I didn’t even notice that…to be honest, it was hard to follow anything after the officiating was getting everything wrong. By the time we got done unpacking the late hit fiasco, the chiefs WR was getting mauled drawing no flag. Just a disaster.
  8. Yah....NBA is so city centric. Of course, I am sure that has a lot to do with the demographics of basketball in general. Even with GA and the championship...you really just don't see much for legitimate Bucks interest outside of the 5-county area.
  9. Honestly, what percentage of this contract is going to be paid off by Jersey/Shirsey profits by the end of his first year?
  10. FSU barely beat Boston College and needed OT to beat Clemson. They also only beat U of Miami by one TD. So it isn't like FSU steamrolled opponents all year either. Did FSU really look like a playoff team narrowly beating a losing record Florida team? Heck, is a 16-6 win over Louisville really all that impressive in itself? They barely put up 200 total yards their last two games. Maybe they pulled a rabbit out of the March Madness hat and decided FSU without their starting QB wasn't worthy of that #4 spot. If so, they probably did us a favor. Their QB threw for a horrid 55 yards in their win against Louisville. When only four teams qualify, we should probably confirm all four teams have a QB.
  11. I believe I have seen it in recent weeks, especially since the NFL is very pro 'let it play out': Since they had to stop the clock for the review of the play, the Chiefs are not penalized with a 10 second run-off due to the penalty. The penalty only causes a run-off if the penalty is the only reason for the stoppage of play.
  12. Probably right...but it is more than possible he misjudged his market and people actually don't want a late 30s injury prone starter with very unflashy stuff. He has never made more than $10mil in his career despite plenty of good years that were even more healthy than last year. Not to mention healthier and didn't follow up a year where he failed to start 10 games. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets exactly $10mil. That being said, happy to have him back. Nice clubhouse guy and we have plenty of payroll space for him. We needed a veteran on staff. Just hope we can maybe get another one that is a bit more dependable health wise. Assuming Burnes is gone of course.
  13. Umm…well, I wish that effort would have had a cleaner ending.
  14. Refs trying to make every call the wrong one.
  15. He ran backwards out of bounds? Clock should roll…?
  16. Refs are a joke..:we caught the break of the day right there.
  17. Was that a foul? No Was that an idiotic play by Owens? Even more so yes
  18. That was pretttttty dumb MLF.
  19. Current Situation: backpedal 20 yards to buy enough time to try and make something happen.
  20. Yo know, regardless of how this transpires in the long run…props to the Brewers making a record contract that no team, small or large market, has done. Much like the second Braun contract and the Yelich extension, this team invests 9 figures into players that no one expects a team in our market size to give out. Proof that, once again, those who complain that Mark Attanasio doesn’t spend seem to be wrong. For all the flack we get for being a farm system for large markets, Attanasio has managed to keep a lot of guys around 8 and even 10+ years around since he took over. Here is to hoping Chourio is the next HOF player with a Brewers cap.
  21. Yo…the pressure from this defense today…
  22. Sure looks like they have a lot of confidence lately.
  23. It’s annoying the SEC pretty much gets an autobid…but the conference is always regarded as the best by a wide mile and they always have an undefeated team or one with one loss. More often than not that #4 is pretty subjective on who ‘deserves it’. Many against expanded playoffs argue championship week is already that. Well…Alabama beat #1. That seems pretty worthy of making it. How do you not have that team in there? I mean honestly, I would have preferred Alabama in there and FSU over Texas. Actually I think I would even make an argument FSU over Washington. Clearly football is a Power 4 and the ACC isn’t very respected.
  24. Alabama beat the 12-0 #1 team reigning champ in football. Their only loss was Texas, a CFP team. I get the nation hates Alabama, but that undoubtably makes them worthy of a spot. Really, if anything, I think FSU deserves Texas’ spot, not Alabama’s spot. But then people would cry over Alabama over Texas because of a H2H result from September. I don’t think an undefeated record really should be some autobid if a 1-loss team has a good resume and said loss is a really strong team. Someone was bound to get a bit hosed in this situation.
