  1. Considering the recent play and the schedule it would be borderline choking for us to be done after Game 162
  2. They may have a lot of money coming off the books...but in reality they don’t. They have major arbitration costs coming up and already a number of big FA contracts on the roster right now. A lot of aging guys, a lot of guys approaching FA, etc. It really isn’t being treated as a team prioritizing sustainability. Signing old FA pitchers is going to get ugly sooner rather than later.
  3. They still have tons of talent, a large payroll, and tons of money coming off the books the next 2 offseasons. I just don't see how we're in any position to be criticizing that teams chances going forward. They are in pretty good shape to stay competitive for a while. Meanwhile we're getting by on smoke & mirrors. I....didn’t say that? I actually said they could stay competitive in the near future if they continue to pump a crazy high payroll every year. If the big ticket free agents produce and that is asking A LOT. I said they weren’t going to dominate yearly anytime soon and are not a dynasty. Probably a likely statement to be true.
  4. This is the third year in a row Trout was nowhere near playing a full season. There has also been rumbling this newest injury can be pretty worrisome long term (not sure on the accuracy of that statement). Would be sad if Trout’s career is ruined by injuries.
  5. Now a 4 team race for the WC. Phillies wrote their own death sentace with another loss today.
  6. Fun series and month really. Dominating teams we should beat and winning series against other contenders.
  7. Just saw the Braun homer video....oh my I have not seen a hanger like that in awhile. Glad Braun jumped on the opportunity.
  8. It didn’t save the season, but is was monumental looking at the standings. Win a series against the best team left on the schedule and stay 1 game back of a spot instead of two? Pretty big mentally, especially considering how the flight home would have felt blowing that 9th inning chance.
  9. That escalated quickly. You do not throw a slider to Braun down the middle. You could see the Cardinals luck was soon to run out. Bases loaded and cycling through pitchers? Someone was bound to come in and throw a mistake or walk someone with no room for error. I was expecting a walk to be honest.
  10. Straight steal vs a righty pitcher? That would take some juevos. Arguably just as likely as a hit for this team.
  11. Alright, still possible to get a run on an error, passed ball, wild pitch, balk, or a straight steal of home.
  12. To think people wanted this Freitas guy for MONTHS. What a waste. Is Woodruff healthy enough to PH yet?
  13. Nationals only hold a 2.5 game lead over the Brewers these days. Nationals quickly getting themselves into a sticky situation. WC race is currently down to the Nationals, Cubs, Brewers, Mets, and Phillies. The D Backs are simply out of it. They trail 5 games to the Cubs and 4 to the Brewers. That doesn’t even include two other teams ahead of them. The Phillies are also getting into a dangerous territory now 3.5 back on the Cubs and 2.5 back on the Brewers. Simply getting too late in the year to start trailing too many games to multiple teams.
  14. Which is why I think he can only get better! I like the kid too. Always had a prospect crush on him for his OBP heavy approach. I figured if he could just be average offensively overall in everything else he would be a solid top of the order hitter for years. Maybe he never makes an AS game, but to have a guy like that in the line up is just real beneficial for the team. It is the equivalent of getting the 6th man award in the NBA. He makes the team around him better.
  15. I will be happy when Arcia is off the team. When a player struggles as badly as Arcia, I'd like a little less playful enthusiasm and a little more grouchy self criticism. But Arcia plays with the looseness of a productive star, even though he's an easy out. Yah, he flat out sucks. We could cycle random $2mil FA guys at this point and come out ahead every time. He certainly comes off the wrong way always goofing around etc. That may not be reflective of his work ethic, but it is just kind of annoying when he has been one of the worst hitters in baseball for multiple years now. He is laughing, but I sure ain’t watching him.
  16. Arcia pumped the end of the season is coming up so his BA stays above .200 and his OPS will be above .600
  17. Really a clutch outing tonight exactly when they needed it. I don't think it's too out of line to say that Lyles has been dang near this team's MVP since August. We have won every single Lyles except a 1-0 loss in which he went 7 innings.
  18. Most earned runs since nearly June. He has surrendered 6 runs to the Brewers since the start of August. EVERY start not against the Brewers in that span just ONE RUN given up. To get those same 6 runs given up you would have to add up his previous 11 starts against other teams.
  19. Starting pitching is an absolutely monumental risk in FA. And likely costs us 7+ years in FA. That is exponentially more risky than extending a hitter.
