  1. Have you ever caught and had someone throw a fastball when you’re expecting some sort of off-speed? My guess is that’s what happened. So it is a common thing for a professional catcher to have happen. ok, thanks for the insight. Actually, yes, quite often. Does the umpire usually get nailed in the face? No.
  2. Shaw is the 3B for the immediate and pretty distant future. Why move him for one season, only to mess with him and move him back next year, when you have another guy who is on a one year deal who is arguably roughly the same there defensively? We did it for a few months...what is the difference?
  3. 60% Chacin, Burnes, Peralta and Woodruff all have ERAs of 6+. That's 80%. ERA doesn’t equal train wreck. Woodruff has had pretty solid peripherals. I’d say he has been solid despite his ERA. Certainly not a train wreck.
  4. We didn't spend some $30mil or so on Moustakas/Grandal this year to watch the season burn up because of young starters and giving them a year to figure it out. If they aren't performing they will get replaced. They may get some slack on the rope...but it will tighten up eventually.
  5. Ahh...and there it is. The Marquette Golden Eagles 2019-2020 season. Gone As for Wisconsin, unless they are determined to stay local seems really unlikely. That is the only fit with Wisconsin...location.
  6. Pretty simple in my opinion. Brewers wanted a better 3rd string catcher with experience. If we need someone to come up and play back-up once a week you want a guy who is a vet and likely a good defender. Nottingham doesn't fit that mold at all. Or they simply are getting him for AAA purposes for AAA pitchers. Freitas>Gosewisch is likely what the Brewers see.
  7. This deal is like $4.5mil, on average, yearly. This is zero risk for the Braves. He could morph into a pumpkin tomorrow and I don’t think a tear would ever get shed. Total non issue kind of commitment.
  8. Ummmmm, really? C'mon, that is just not true. How so? This deal is absolutely horrendous and clearly way under the market value for this type of a deal. There are multiple players to do better. The ceiling salary for 9 years is absolutely terrible.
  9. Yelich was similar at his extension time OPS wise (as an outfielder) if that is what you want to use. Kingery wasn’t even hitting MLB pitching. Both got more attractive deals in my opinion.
  10. Braves definitely took advantage of him though, not saying that is wrong though. They saw a player desperate for money and got him to take a deal well under what other players have gotten. That is what happens when one party has little to no leverage, but wants to get a deal done no matter what.
  11. For the millionth time and hopefully the last time, I don't care that he took an extension. I think a lot of players should do it. The thing I see here is the fact comparatively speaking this extension sucks compared to what other players have been getting in similar deal in recent history. I don't think the guaranteed money is notably low by about $10mil and I think those option years are a complete joke. This contract should not have a max value of $50mil. Braves got lucky to have a player that no matter what they offered he was going to say yes. Even with little leverage pretty sad his agent couldn't do better.
  12. I recall Profar getting injured. But he wasn't anything before doing so (proven wise) and not really any assurance he was actually going to hit.
  13. You can’t compare him to Lucroy. Lucroy wasn’t anything special before, during, or even shortly after that extension. His potential was meh. Actually I think there is an article out there that questions why WE did that deal....at the time of course. It is being rated on what he has done so far and partially due to potential. In those regards it seems insultingly low. Christian Yelich actually isn’t a terrible comp. Actually they had almost identical starts according to WAR...though Albies notable younger start. Yelich got 7/$49.5mil and a club option for $15mil bringing his total to about $65mil over 8 years. Ozzie Albies on the other hand signed for 7/$35mil with two club options that will only bring that total to 9/$45mil. Mind you he plays a more premium position by a mile. Scott Kingery got 6/$25mil without taking a single AB let alone a 4 WAR AS season! Not only that, but Kingery has more potential money at 9/$66mil! This deal sucks and his agent should be partly ashamed. There are quite a few comps out there where guys signed at similar points in their career recently yet he managed to do notably worse than all of them. This deal should be a lot more similar to Yelich’s deal. It is kind of mind boggling this deal can only net him $50mil after 9 years.
  14. I am sure it is nice to get a hefty cut of these extensions if you are the agents...but you must wonder if it is really worth it when you negotiated, what is widely considered, a pretty terrible deal. Actually widely considered the wort deal ever for a player. I would guess Albies agent approached the Braves and gave up all negotiating power to come to this kind of contract.
  15. I’m not arguing that he did a deal. I am arguing his agent got him a bad deal...or the Braves were cheap, but he was desperate to lock up money...at which point what a bad situation for him.
  16. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theringer.com/platform/amp/mlb/2019/4/11/18306927/ozzie-albies-atlanta-braves-contract-extension It’s bad because even if you wanted to do this deal (length wise and this early in his career) the numbers seem really low. As noted the option years are pathetic. On another deal, again, I’m not saying taking a major team friendly deal is bad...just the terms (especially with Albies) is completely head scratching and looks like he got swindled trying to negotiate his own deal and the conversation was in a different language. Amazing a professional agent couldn’t do better than this honestly.
  17. Another player signs off on ridiculous number of years for a maximum of $49mil over the next nine years. Only assures himself $35mil for that. Wish we had some players like the Braves seem to have. Literally almost zero risk here for the Braves with more upside than one could imagine. Good for him, but now is under team control past 30 years old. I....wow. Almost all walks of baseball life in agreement this is possibly the worst deal ever signed by a player...ever. https://www.google.com/amp/s/deadspin.com/the-braves-just-got-nine-years-of-ozzie-albies-at-an-in-1833979132/amp
  18. I am not sure what the gain in a World Series really gets us. There is value there in the short term...but once again it is not going to make the franchise any more valuable than it was before. Even if you want to argue it does it would be pretty darn marginal. Success on the field just doesn't equal anything to the valuation of the franchise....nothing meaningful that is. The Royals, the only small market to win the World Series in the last friggin decade plus, are proof it doesn't really add anything long term. Their attendance quickly dropped back down to pre-WS levels in three years. Yes, they now suck, but it shows the WS victory wears off fast. They sucked before the WS and now they have comparative or worse attendance numbers. Also lets not forget our WS odds are pathetic to begin with...it is for any team. Fangraphs has us at 1.6%. What is Keuchel or Kimbrel going to make that? 3%? I bet they wouldn't even be that high. $20mil+ to increase our chances a percent or so? So if making that signing worth it you need to win the World Series then there is a 97% chance you pretty much wasted all of that. I am not saying they won't shrink profits to zero or even take a small loss...but they aren't going "all-in" in the sense of tens of millions of dollars in the hole. It is crazy people think Attanasio should throw money around like it isn't an object to take our odds from 1.6% to 3%.
  19. No because: #1 You assume Attanasio has any interest selling the team and realizing those gains. All signs point to the opposite. #2 You are inferring/assuming that large valuation increases are due to them spending more and more money...but it is not. The Marlins are cheapos and the worst run franchise in sports....yet they are worth $1 billion. That article actually has a few valuation graphs. One of which shows you the breakdown of where they get their value. The only one that the team really even controls is their "brand". Brewers do an amazing job and the Marlins are terrible building a brand...yet all that hard work gives us a brand value of $100mil while the Marlins sit at $50mil. This would probably be one of those situations where spending a dollar gets you a dime in the long run. Spending money on the payroll is not a long term investment...and as the Marlins showed in years past you can be big cheapos (garnering huge short term profits) and see no hit to the value of the franchise when you decide to sell it.
  20. I'm sure if you had something of extreme value, you could borrow off of that value without having to sell. Isn't that what collateral is? Lenders would offer financing on that value, and they wouldn't use an imaginary number. They would conduct an audit and lend based on real worth. Okay...while I agree that can be done...lets think about that actually happening for a second. Mark Attanasio taking out a loan to add payroll. An owner taking out a loan against the value of their franchise because they are that tight on payroll. It is absolutely just ridiculous and never going to happen. That is the only possible way they could make the value of the franchise a liquid asset of some sort, but that is just beyond any fantasy even imaginable. Pigs will fly before something like that happens. And someone mentioning past profits in 2015-2016 etc....forget about them. They mean absolutely nothing to the current day to day payroll. They may help use that money to build a new ST complex or A+ team...but those are real investments that add value to the organization long term. Moustakas/Grnadal...in all reality that is basically just flushing money down a drain. Barring a WS win there is no way all that added payroll for them is even near worth what we paid. If payroll is maxed and one is arguing for them to throw saved money or take on debt to put $20mil into someone you are essentially asking for them to throw money into the payroll to watch it burn. Attanasio would probably throw $100mil at the payroll tomorrow if it meant assuring a WS win...but payroll does not mean that and being the best team almost assures the opposite historically.
