  1. Domingo Santana and Corey Hart is the comp I think of. However I don't think he will ever be on that level. Slightly above average player in my opinion. Luckily for him Braun might be out the door this off season and we can move him to LF where he may fare better defensively.
  2. Who knows!! The offseason hasn't even started. Who knows what players are going to become available. Maybe the Dodgers change their mind and don't want an injury prone 30+ year old. Maybe the Dodgers refuse to up their offer from August. Very possible.
  3. So the Dodgers don't acquire a cheap and controllable star player? Why wouldn't any team competing with the Dodgers claim him? Teams do it all the time to block other teams. Also why wouldn't a team who wants him just try to get him? Maybe once the offer is ticking down for 48 hours they decide $80mil in the bank sounds great and they cut him lose for nothing but salary relief. If a team wanted Braun for just his contract or very little other than that they WOULD have claimed Braun. Why would you not try if you wanted him? If a GM doesn't claim a player because he figured such player will be pulled back that GM is a complete idiot. You don't go about things like that. There is zero risk or penalty for claiming a player and not making a deal.
  4. Seems to be a lock for next year as long as he is on the roster... They have to have someone right?
  5. Because teams are smarter than this. They know the Brewers aren't letting Braun walk out the door just for his contract. It really is that simple. Most teams don't want to give up something while paying the contract. That's fine. But all it takes is one (the Dodgers) to step forward. There is no doubt in my mind that Braun gets what his contract is now on the free market. Maybe more. Don't buy this argument for a second. If that was the case the D Backs or someone else would have claimed him to block teams like the Dodgers.
  6. I guess I don't get too riled up about strikeouts. Is a player better if he gets conservative with 2 strikes and grounds out instead? Not if there is someone on first. So let's take an example I have seen our players do all year. Chris Carter doing what feels like on a weekly basis: Chris Carter walks up to the plate with a man on third just one out....annnnnnnnd strikeout. Whoops wish he could have grounded out or hit a fly ball to score a run. Instead scoreless inning in the end. I know people in the game threads hate when we try to play small ball getting a guy over to third with one out. They say it never works for us this year. Reason being is because this team strikes out so much no one ever actually puts the ball in play. An out is not just an out. Base runners are not just base runners. Such comments make me want to cringe. They are all not created equal.
  7. Couples things: 1. You people cannot take Puig's salary and subtract that from Braun's contract. Why? Because we aren't doing them a favor by taking on Puig. Puig is not an Aaron Hill or a Brandon McCarthy. Puig is not dead weight therefor acting like we are doing them a favor is inaccurate. The Dodgers are going to save that Puig money whether we take him or not. Many teams will be looking to trade for Puig this off season. The money we are picking up in the deal is Brandon McCarthy. That is the dead weight money we are taking off their hands. So the real cost of Ryan Braun to the Dodgers is about $14.5mil a year after subtracting McCarthy's $23mil future earnings. Not the $11mil people are throwing around. 2. Yasiel Puig has been on a tear more than just since his call up(18ABs). He was on a tear all of June/July where he had about 100 ABs.
  8. Regardless of the details trading away two players in a trade for one player and then both being named POTY for an organization isn't exactly something I like to see.
  9. Please baby Jesus can people stop comparing Davis to Carter. BAD comparison. First off Davis' production as an OFer is a lot better than producing it as a 1B, Davis is dependable to hold an average near .250, Carter strikes out A LOT, Carter has atrocious defense while outside of his arm Davis is decent, Carter is lucky to have an average of .225, and Davis has better power stats. The real deal breaker for Chris Carter is his horrid career .219 BA and his yearly 200 SOs. Khris Davis keeps his strikeouts low enough and his average high enough to avoid the "all or nothing" label.
  10. The Dodgers DID NOT claim Braun. Braun passed through waivers. We have been close in one trade and it had us picking up $30+mil. No one wants Braun with his contract. It is just the reality of things.
  11. He was on a tear before being sent down. Everyone knows Puig has the skills to be great...honestly someone would have to be delusional to not see it. That being said its hard to harness that when you are being an idiot on a weekly basis ticking everyone off. The Dodgers sent him down because they can't stand Puig's attitude etc. The reports on his character have been much more positive since the beginning of August, as well. Of course, that may just be the Dodgers saying what they need to say to try to protect his trade value. Yah I haven't heard anything after his call-up, but I am pretty sure someone mentioned he had some incidents in AAA. However I never read such things and don't know how accurate that statement was.

  13. Forget about Puig for like 5 seconds. I am not talking about the Dodgers finding a better deal surrounding dumping Puig. I am talking about finding a different big time player to acquire. In the off season there are going to be more players on the block. There are going to be other big time players on the block. Now will any of those players be attractive to the Dodgers and will they be interested in those players at their price tags? I don't know and none of us do. Yes, but once again I am not talking about it in such a general sense. A week or two after the world series very little is going on and teams are still processing the prior season. It is very similar to trading for players in June. The market just isn't there yet and nearly every team in every case will wait till the deadline or in this case around the winter meetings when teams actually start to move/sign players. Neither team has any motivation to complete this trade before things pick up in the off season.
  14. 1. Puig means little. The real problem is the Dodgers finding a better option or at least something they like more than Braun. They liked Braun in August, but then again he was the only option you could get for that kind of caliber player. It is impossible to know if that will happen or not so early. 2. I don't see the Dodgers rushing to do a deal early in the off season. It isn't like teams will be lining up to get Braun. Dodgers will be like any team and assess what they have and their options after the season. It takes two to tango and there is little reason for the Dodgers to rush into a Braun trade and watch a better option pop up weeks later. I don't think Stearns will jump on the phone sounding desperate to get it done either. He will wait till other teams start to hop on the phones in December to see what other offers are out there. That being said I think the deal happens around the winter meetings. A lot can change quickly though.
  15. Kenosha isn't that far from Miller Park and the traffic coming in from the south is never bad for me. The stoppages usually start right after the Miller Park Way exit. If you are coming from the south getting on time for earlier games shouldn't be a problem. Now from the west...? Totally different story as that is usually horrible in my experiences. And like usual it is the same boring setup. Swear it never changes.
  16. His value at the deadline is better than it would be in the winter. I think most teams prefer to role the dice since it is such a crap shoot every year. At the deadline teams are always looking to solidify their bullpens and sometimes the pickings are pretty slim like this year. Adding a guy like Thornburg down the stretch is huge. I will never forget when we added K-Rod and it just changed our season. I am not one to hold onto relievers and gamble, but I wouldn't trade Thornburg for a "good" offer. It would have to be more than just good. If he pitches like this again next year he will be considered an elite closer. He could be worth a huge return next July. Id would need a pretty highly regarded prospect to not take that risk. If all they are offered are a couple good, but nothing special prospects I would pass. I would want more than they got for Smith.
  17. Yah the Dodgers have consistently been off his no trade list every year. This last year he took off every non west coast team minus the Marlins though. This most likely due to his growing family and wanting to be close to home. No trade clause won't be an issue with the Dodgers.
  18. That is great and all but he already has power to block most trades. The only teams not on his no trade list that are even possible landing spots are the Dodgers and a long shot the Giants. If a trade doesn't work out with the Dodgers he might as well have 10-5 rights. I am simply saying a trade may not materialize period if the Dodgers go a different route which is a very possible thing. I don't think he is all but gone as the off season will give them many other good options.
  19. Then why is he still a Brewer? Why are we needing to pick up $30mil+ in salary? Why does no one want him for just the contract no prospects? It actually sounds like the total opposite is true. Not sure how people think Braun still has tons of value and has a team friendly contract. Neither is very accurate.
  20. I think people underrate the money we would be saving. It easy to look at the proposed deal and come to the conclusion it is a weak return. Which at face value that may be true. However what if Stearns took that money we are saving and signed a Yadier Alvarez type prospect plus more top international prospects? Is the return all that weak now? Now its impossible to know where that saved money would go. Is Attanasio banking all the money we are saving on payroll for his own good and this would be the same? Would Braun's money just be piled on that so we can sign a big free agent in a few years? Would we do extensions with it? Would we sign international prospects with it? Regardless saving that money could be a big deal for the Brewers.
  21. David Stearns' grade on the Khris Davis trade really hinges on Nottingham staying at catcher. He trusted the scouts and if they were wrong the grade on that trade will not be very good. Unless his bat really just explodes and he can have the offense for 1B...doubtful though.
  22. The Brewers were not the only team to claim Braun. The Orioles and White Sox also claimed Puig.
  23. If Puig was dead money why haven't they traded him yet? They must have value in him or he would be gone. Many times teams have come knocking trying to get Puig by taking mainly just the contract.
  24. I agree with you...but man you can say it without the "crystal ball" wording. Puig is the player in this trade with a high ceiling. People will complain about his warts, but then again look at what we are trading. Braun is full of warts himself. If De Leon or Bellinger were in this trade who the second prospect was would not have been a deal breaker for the Brewers. They would have snatched that trade up in a heartbeat.
  25. Because things simply change. Once the off season hits the Dodgers will likely have other options they will explore. I have no doubts the teams will revisit this trade in the off season, but there is a reason the trade didn't happen. The teams simply couldn't agree on the return going back to the Brewers. Now yes they did run out of time, but there is no guarantee that more time would have lead to a better outcome. Regardless who knows what will happen in the off season as they could easily go a different route.
