  1. Which he never griped about at all, moving to a position that wasn't his strength. No one said it was Braun's fault.
  2. He's probably contractually obligated to do the ESPN gig and I'm sure ESPN isn't just going to let him out easily or cheaply. The amount of hate this guy is getting is ridiculous. You'd think he's being gifted a major league starting job and guaranteed to hit cleanup while being paid $25M a year for 10 years. Has there been another player allowed to miss multiple days during instructionals for another non-related professional job? If not, why is he treated differently (we already know the answer to this)? This move 100% was publicity just like Garth Brooks in spring training Why would they waste time for a Tebow publicity stunt? The Mets get absolutely nothing out of this. They must see some glimmer of talent or they wouldn't do it.
  3. They got Santana in 2009 and Chris Carter was considered a Top 100 prospect. Over the years he was labeled as a Top 25 guy by multiple outlets and some even had him knocking on the door as a Top 10 guy. In a lot of ways as a prospect he was similar to Joey Gallo. Of course that really isn't a reason to have a teenager play the OF vs. 1B.
  4. Mets ended up signing him to a MiLB deal. Really this is a no lose situation. At worst one of their MiLB clubs is really happy by a spike in attendance. Best case he actually is decent enough to climb the ladder a bit and make multiple MiLB clubs happy...or baseball was his best sport all along and he becomes something.
  5. Hopefully Santana can find a way to play 1B or he just doesn't have a future here. I remember when we got him his defense was some kind of positive with a strong arm. However since coming over all I have seen is a guy with fringy range, poor routes, and doesn't hustle. That strong arm he is suppose to have sucks too. I can't remember one time he had an accurate throw anywhere on the field. I guess if we trade Braun one could test him out in LF to see if he can do better. Braun plays LF notably better than he did RF. Actually the difference is pretty shocking. I doubt the same would be the case with Santana, but I guess we won't know unless we try. I still might prefer a move to 1B since we have no one there long term.
  6. For the record the Brewers were not the only team to put in a claim for Puig. From what I saw the Orioles and White Sox also put in a claim for him. I am sure the interested parties list will grow in the offseason when teams will have OF slots opening up and their wallets.
  7. Saying our defense is the worst in baseball by(I assume) errors committed doesn't really seem like an accurate way to rate them. A lot of defensive stats actually like the majority of our players. No one consistently is rated horribly except Santana and Carter to an extent. The Dodgers have committed the least amount of errors and I have heard their defense actually might be up there with the worst of them. Chase Utley has only 4 errors, but is hated by fielding stats.
  8. So you insult everyone else on the board on how they evaluate players and you are evaluating solely on ERA. Then you take away bad starts? Doesn't work that way. I also don't see why being injured matters. If anything that is a really bad thing and a huge reason why he is nearly worthless. The guy is lucky to give you 150innings. Last time he gave a team 200innings? 2011...yikes. He is 32 and has consistently given less innings 3 years straight. Outside of his last 2 starts(now 3) he hasn't been overly impressive. I use my eyes like you want people to do and he has looked OK. He needs to continue what he has done his past couple times out. If he can do that then teams will come calling.
  9. Because we have a lot of OFers with not enough spots. Santana has extremely questionable defense in the outfield and a lot of that has to do with his route running. He also has attractive 6'5" height that makes a big target over at 1B. People want to try Santana out at first because he has power potential and a promising bat in general. Why wouldn't you want to try him there? He could provide a long term solution there. On a side note if you are going to start a thread make a real title next time and the "we are all dumb/crazy" attitude out. You don't have a crystal ball and you have never seen Santana at 1B in your entire life just like us. You have no idea how he will fair there.
  10. Why do you think that? I thought it was an okay idea. Fowler seemed to be moving slowly to the ball and Braun did make it in there. Slid 2 inches to far. He would have been in scoring position with 1 out. He was being lazy, but it took a horrible throw to be safe. A half decent throw and he is out easily. He also would have been much slower had he gone into second at a speed slow enough to stay on the base. Seemed likely a very unnecessary risk. I'm not saying it was plain stupid, but it wasn't all that smart. If that would have been Villar this place would be blowing up.
  11. Actually Villar would probably be pretty similar. Strong arms, but make a handful of errors. Only difference would be Villar being a bit more agile than an early career Weeks.
  12. He had a full year of being a disaster and then the first half of his 2016 season was a total disaster. Not to mention he might not even hit 100 innings this year because of an injury...which is a huge career long concern. He now has 1.5 months of being OK in the past 2 years. The interest in a pitcher like that is pretty questionable. May be there may not be. A lot of that may depend on how he finishes the rest of the season.
  13. Braun is usually a smart base runner...however right there he was not.
  14. Matt Garza has actually been a pretty reliable starter the last 1.5 months.
  15. Well he has been decent since the end of July. If he keeps that up for the rest of the season some teams might see him as a #5 pitcher. So basically we could hope some team would take him and we could get some salary relief.
  16. I'm not sure why so many think 2B is the same difficulty as 3B/SS. Go out to your nearest ball field and have someone hit you some balls and make throws to 1B. You will find out real quick how much easier 2B is. The throw is shorter, the balls are hit out you softer, starting double plays is easier, and you don't have to deal with soft hit dribblers. There is a reason why a lot of guys play 2B only. It is either due to a weak arm or they can't make the throws consistently. There is no guarantee he is better at 2B, but there are a lot of reasons why he could improve at 2B and fare better than he has on the left side of the infield.
  17. Choking away the division in September and not making the playoffs like in 2014...maybe. Losing 90 games in a lost season you never had a chance in...probably not.
  18. I don't think the defense is all that bad moving forward. At some point next year we could have something like this: C Maldonado 1B Carter 2B Villar SS Arcia 3B Perez LF Braun CF Brinson RF Santana/Broxton Honestly outside of Carter I think all of these guys grade out as average at least. I know Villar racks up some errors, but a move to 2B could help and he provides a ton of range getting to balls many wouldn't get to. It's not like we are trotting out a bunch of Yuni B defenders that we can replace.
  19. For a playoff game that is an interesting dilemma. For a regular season game the obvious answer is a mixture of both or admission would always be free. However for a MiLB playoff game there isn't much notice so the turnout might not be that good as I doubt many care about MiLB playoffs. I don't know how many typically come out for a playoff game, but if it is close to what they normally get charging admission is the obvious financial choice. I think Columbus just wants a good playoff atmosphere and try to stir up some interest. Id guess they actually take a financial hit from not charging for tickets. Unless the crowd is tiny and free tickets pack the place of course. It would take a lot of concession sales to make enough profit to make up for the lost ticket sales.
  20. Another thing to note when looking at next year overall there may be some possible improvements, but there are also a ton of question marks. Will a bullpen of no names pitch this well next year? Can Thornburg specifically be this good every year? Will Braun keep up this production and fairly good health? Villar/Broxton/Perez doomed for regression? Is there any reliable piece in our rotation? Will Guerra even be useful next year? In my opinion it is pretty hard to improve more than 5-7 wins on the year prior when you are depending on rookies and inexperienced returners. Teams that are improving by 10+ games a year already have a solid core in place and/or are adding proven players to the mix not rookies.
  21. If you think this team could be in the wild card race you are sipping on some good stuff. Not saying it can't happen...but incredibly unlikely. We would need shocking performances in the rotation and guys like Santana/Arcia would need to perform very well. Too many holes on offense right now and outside of Braun not much stability anywhere. Then we would need to get shocking performance out of our starting rotation. With the offense we look to have two guys would have to be ace-like and the other three very good. They are going to try and win as many games as they can next year, but the team just isn't there yet. 2018 may be a year where a couple things fall our way and we find ourselves above .500. However 2017 we would need a maricle.
  22. Let's not compare Ryan Cordell to Joey Gallo when it comes to swing and miss issues. Joey is consistently over 30% for his K-rate. Cordell has floated near 20% which isn't even all that bad.
  23. Peralta isn't even close to having the potential Puig has. Peralta at best is a mid rotation starter...at best. He does not have a ton of potential. Puig is true elite caliber player. Stearns would make that trade in a heartbeat. No hard to find another Peralta.
  24. No, that was Mark Attanasio. Many of the overpriced signings were Attanasio telling him to do it. Melvin was also forced to keep filling the roster with old players etc. because Attanasio wanted to compete and that was no place for unproven rookies. Also didn't help payroll was maxed out forcing us to go with cheap options that weren't all that great. Doug Melvin threw mud at a wall because Attanasio insisted on trying to compete. Back on topic David Stearns is going after the best talent. The odds we end up with 4 OFers(one can move to 1B) that all pan out to be notably above average is sadly pretty low.
  25. Possible problem of having to many players at one position and having nowhere to put them? The Cubs had/have that problem. That's a problem a would love to have.
