  1. I don't think anybody would say that any person going from very little money to a lot of money, and the freedoms that come with that money, wouldn't be impacted in some way, regardless of where they are from. But it happens, and can happen, to anybody. When someone suggests that it happens to Cubans (or Wisconsinites, or Canadians, or Midwesterners, etc.) it's a discriminatory statement and that's a problem. Not racist, but discriminatory nonetheless. And please don't trot out the "he didn't mean anything by it" argument. Or that anybody is being overly politically correct. The comment was discriminatory and prejudicial and has no place in society.
  2. Banda is like bruise on Mass Haas's leg that he feels compelled to keep pressing his finger on. And it hurts every single time.
  3. Maybe it's not this simple, but I really don't think teams take guys in the first 10 rounds that are maybes. If a team picks them, they are near-certain signees. Maybe the 1st round is an exception, but there are very few players taken on rounds 1-10 that don't sign. My point is, I don't think anyone has to wring their hands over anybody until Jared Horn, who isn't going to sign anyway.
  4. I think that, in Garza's mind, the Brewers sending him to the bullpen cost him $13 million, the amount that would vest for 2018 if he meets the criteria. Between the shut down last year and this year's injury it's virtually impossible for him to vest that option now (he would need 58 starts between now and the end of next season). His contract was set up to reward Garza (although $13 million is low if he pitches well) if he stayed relatively healthy and performed. He didn't do either and now it's going to cost him.
  5. [sarcasm]And now I'm waiting for Harold Reynolds to say that this sends a bad message too.[/sarcasm]
  6. I'd have to dig up an old scouting report on Ponce for this, but I know he's quite a bit bigger than Burnes is.
  7. I love the pick of Burnes. Really good arm and very athletic. I'm excited about this one.
  8. Per a comment I saw recently, Stearns says they won't move Villar, that Villar is "the type of player we're trying to acquire."
  9. Analysis by Christopher Crawford on Baseball Prospectus 5. Milwaukee Brewers: Corey Ray, OF, Louisville Ray may not be at the top of my draft board, but he is my favorite player in the draft. If that doesn't make sense to you, that's okay. He can flat out hit, and he has underrated pop from the left side. He's also a guy who can steal 30-40 bases, and I give him at least a chance to stick at center. The upside is high, but it's the extremely high floor that makes me love this pick. Good job, Milwaukee.
  10. Or they could be taking the highest rated guys on their draft board, and the first 2 happen to be college players. I guess I really don't think they draft anyone thinking that they'll compete at a certain time. Given the high rate of draftees that never even make it to the major league level it would seem to be a poor strategy.
  11. I'm hoping for Connor Burnes or Logan Shore at 46. Shore has had great results and I like that Burnes is a very athletic pitcher.
  12. It depends on where you travel. If you travel within Wisconsin, MLB TV isn't going to help. If you travel out of state a lot, it's terrific. I watch a lot of baseball (not the Brewers) on MLB TV and I love it. I've used FireStick, Roku, Apple TV, my Samsung Tablet, and my Samsung phone (as well as other platforms) and I have no complaints about any of them. The only drawback is if you can't get a good internet signal it can be choppy. I also watch Fox Sports Go on my tablet a lot and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality there.
  13. This makes me sad. I loved Ruben. I remember chatting with him at the 2002 All-Star game, he and his family were very nice.
  14. Yes, this is very frustrating. I get that very often Broxton has looked over-matched at the plate, but this was supposed to be a year where guys like him were going to be given a long leash to see if they can handle big league pitching. Yet, instead of letting Broxton get say five starts a week, we get career spare part Nieuwenhuis getting the bulk of the starts in CF and 30 year old scrap heap Presley getting nearly three times more at bats. Maybe Broxton simply won't ever be able to be productive vs big league pitching, but the team won't ever find that out by only giving him a handful of sporadic at bats a week. Flores has gotten significantly more at bats and while he hasn't looked as over-matched as Broxton, he only has four extra base hits in 113 at bats to go along with his mediocre speed and .560 OPS. Flores doesn't look to possess a single skill which sticks out and makes you think, at least he can do X and then maybe other areas he can grow into. Broxton wishes he had a .560 OPS.
  15. They could eliminate the fee at this point and it wouldn't change anything. The cost of the player's salary is so much higher than the fee that the fee is meaningless. All it's there for now is to throw a bone to the team that loses the player.
  16. Has anyone heard anything about Braun's willingness to go anywhere? I know he has a no-trade clause that limits a deal to 6 teams. I assume those are west coast/desert area teams. I think the teams are set each year, so they can change, but do we know who he will accept a trade to without his permission right now?
  17. They lyricist really wanted the Pilots to go. And they went to Milwaukee. So I guess the song worked?
  18. Throwing around the "Y" word?! C'mon now. Villar looks like Ozzie Smith compared to Yuni B. Villar, from all accounts, is much better at 2B, 3B, LF, RF than SS, but the fact that he is playing a fairly decent SS proves his value (to me at least) as a future "Supersub"/Utility player or a starting 2B/3B who can give you a game or 2 at SS when Arcia needs a day off. Yuni B's extremely below average level of range at SS/2B is a poor comparison. He was a replacement level defensive 3B and fairly competent at 1B (though he couldn't hit well enough to be a MLB 1B) I'm not trying to beat up Villar, but the idea that he has been even adequate in the field at SS is wrong. He is near the low end of MLB SS in RZR, UZR, UZR/150 and in Fangraphs and Baseball Prospectus' total defense ratings. Hey, I hope he works his way into a piece worth playing or able to bring something back in trade, but I'm not sold on him yet. It's just way too early. If he keeps hitting like he has, then I think he becomes a nice utility piece, but his shortcomings in the field preclude him from being an everyday player/foundation piece for the team.
  19. Yea, I'm not in love with him. But what's wrong with locking up a SP long term, even if he is a #3 type? Obviously, the caveat is at what price. He's been durable, and there is value in having a dependable #3 type SP locked up long term, no? A solid mid-rotation SP is a definite asset for any team. If a contract is team-friendly I wouldn't be against it, but, as TPlush said, I doubt Nelson is of a mind to give much of a team-friendly deal right now. And when I say team friendly that means a 3 year deal max. Anything over that, no matter how low the annual dollar amount, is a mistake because of the loss of flexibility. Once Stearns feels the team is a playoff competitor, that is the time to open up the budget. A mid-rotation FA at that point could make a huge difference.
  20. I'm not sold on Villar being more than a replacement level utility guy yet, although he has shown promise. He won't block Arcia, but Villar may have value as a filler at 3B, possibly an everyday 2B. I think, ultimately, he'll be more of a utility player. Being one of the better players on a 65 win team doesn't mean he's actually any good. He's on pace to be worth 1.5-2 WARP, which is okay, but hardly much of a difference maker. I totally agree with you on Stearns approach. Churning the bottom of the 40-man, looking for incremental improvements and taking chances on players that are talented but flawed is exactly what he should be doing. It's likely that few of them will become productive, but the risk is virtually zero on most of these moves.
  21. I wouldn't give him any kind of a long-term deal right now. He's been okay, but consider that his walk rate is up, his K rate is down and his BABIP is much lower than his career mark. Those 3 indicators tell me that he is not actually improving and that his success this season has more good luck than normal involved. The sample size is small, but if the first 2 trends continue and his BABIP regresses to the mean, he's going to feel like the #3/4 SP that his peripherals indicate. Sometimes people start to fall in love with someone because he is the team's best player at a position, even if he's not that good. Nelson isn't bad, he isn't great. He's better than replacement-level for sure, but not someone I would be looking to lock up for any kind of long-term deal. There is no reason to not go year-to-year with any player that is not an elite talent.
  22. For the record, Baseball Prospectus and Fangraphs have Villar ranked in the middle of the pack of SS or lower. Fangraphs shows him as the 14th most valuable, BP as the 20th. His offensive production is offset by his poor defense, which is how I felt about him before I looked up the numbers. As well as he has played at times, he seems to have a lot of lapses of concentration, both in the field and on the bases. Villar is what we all thought he would be when he arrived in Milwaukee; a placeholder for the postion until Arcia arrives.
  23. Some interesting writing on the process, 'tanking', and what the plan might be going forward. Julien Assouline (the writer) talks some about the long-term and does think Carter will be dealt. http://milwaukee.locals.baseballprospectus.com/2016/05/19/the-draft-is-only-a-tool-in-the-rebuilding-process/
