  1. Correct. We lose the third round pick, not the third pick. Starting in 2018 the competitive balance picks are protected. Didn't realize that & why I debated the point earlier. Sorry to cause any confusion.
  2. Ok, Baseball Anmerica (in its free area) posted its farm system rankings today. https://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2018-organization-talent-rankings-reports/#f4QWD8ZYZWt1I5SI.97 Have to believe this is pre-Yelich trade. Especially if it matches what was listed in the handbook that is now being sent out. Will know that soon. Brewers #11 per BA. With 4 sources reporting that is 2 listings at #11 (BA & Street & Smith's), #8 (K Law) and #7 (Bleacher Report). 8 (or more) sources to go. Among those sources are Baseball Prospectus, Minor League Ball (John Sickels), Prospect Digest, Minor League Baseball Analyst, MiLB.com, Call to the Pen & FanRag..
  3. Cleveland says No. Adding McKenzie was doom. He is the 1 untouchable. On top of that the impact of adding Shaw/ Santana without the departure of Kipnis/ Chisenhall/ other position pieces causes a larger player jam than the Brewers have with its OF currently.
  4. Not for Cleveland. While I agree this trade is not likely given Santana for Salazar alone if pretty equal, I do believe that Cleveland is likely needing to go all in this year given Andrew Miller, Cody Allen, Michael Brantley are FAs after the season, Jay Bruce and Carlos Santana are already gone, Jason Kipnis has been hurt and Encarnacion, Carrasco and Kluber can be FAs after 2019. Trading for Santana makes a ton of sense. Part in bold is not accurate. Edwin has a team option for $20M in 2020 (or $5M buyout) Carrasco has team option for $9.5M in 2020 (no buyout) Klubers has team options for 2020 (at $13.5M) AND 2021 (at $14M)..
  5. Correct, Darvish could not receive a QO because he was dealt mid-season so signing him (highly doubtful, not happening per HH19 last week). But signing Cain (since he did reject the QO from KS) is costing the Brewers more than its 3rd round pick What do you mean Cain is costing the Brewers more than its 3rd round pick? Per the CBA the brewers are subject to losing their 3rd highest draft pick which would be comp balance B pick however, that pick is not subject to forfeiture so it falls to the third round pick. http://www.mlbplayers.com/pdf9/5450407.pdf https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3551 I stand corrected. Thanks for the sources. I made sure to copy/ save them to my flash drive..
  6. Just an FYI (I did not see it mentioned earlier) regarding considered value of Danny Salazar (Indians) and Jake Odorizzi (Rays).. Zach Crizer of MLB.com lists right-handers Danny Salazar (Indians) and Jake Odorizzi (Rays), and left-hander Ariel Miranda (Mariners) as pitchers with the potential to reach “ace” status in 2018. Crizer uses some incredibly specific stats to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these three pitchers, showing a potential path to a breakout for each one. The piece includes videos and heat maps as well; it’s an intriguing read, particularly considering that Salazar and Odorizzi have been mentioned in trade rumors this offseason.. https://www.mlb.com/news/3-starters-who-could-turn-into-aces-in-2018/c-265432782

  8. Right, but we already lost a draft pick on Cain. Losing another one for Lynn or Cobb may be difficult My understanding from the on-deck event today is that they are going for it and they have obviously already burned the third round pick. Why would a fourth rounder stop them? That part in bold above is not accurate. https://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2017/11/4/16604672/qualifying-offer-explainer-amount-mlb-offseason From the linked page: - If a team receives revenue sharing, it loses its third-highest pick. The fourth-highest pick gets tacked on if it signs more than one free agent that declined a qualifying offer. - If a team doesn’t receive revenue sharing or exceed the luxury tax, it loses its second-highest pick and $500,000 from its international bonus pool money. Another player, and it gives up its third-highest pick as well. Since I am unsure of the revenue sharing money situation, this would indicate the Brewers are losing either: (a) their comp B pick (between rounds 2 & 3 along with the signing pool money) or (b) their 2nd round pick (& the signing pool money that goes with it).
  9. I spotted the item on MLBTR before getting back to the board here. Here is what was written: Trade speculation surrounding Brewers outfielder Domingo Santana has spiked ever since the team acquired Christian Yelich and signed Lorenzo Cain just minutes later. But although he slugged 30 homers last season and is just 25 years of age, his trade value may not be as high as one might think. Rosenthal quotes rival executives saying that Santana is “a bad defender” and “not a winning player.” Those comments come off a bit extreme, but it’s worth noting that he struck out in nearly 30% of his plate appearances last season while being worth -5 Defensive Runs Saved in the outfield. There have been references to other metrics for Domingo being unusually high, an indication of him having some great luck last season. As I have written before, Domingo has value but perhaps its not as high as many Brewer fans want to believe. Perhaps his greatest value to the Brewers is playing for them, not as a trade chip. Time will tell.
  10. Does anyone know what rank the Brewers farm system got from Keith Law? His ranks were locked in pre Yelich trade and posted in the subscriber section at ESPN on Friday 1/26. Right now I do not know the rankings for 5 teams: Arizona, Colorado, LA Dodgers, Milwaukee and Texas. The remaining spots are #8, #9, #11, #22 & #26
  11. I happened to see it on roughly 30 minutes into the program. Immediately set the DVR to catch a replay. As I watched they kept scrolling the top 50 at the bottom of the screen. Saw Brinson was listed with Miami. McKenzie at #24 and Mejia listed at #11..
  12. What about the injury issue with Fulmer at the end of last season? I think that would further push items toward Archer (or going with a FA)..
  13. Fair question. I don't think Brinson will have the 30 homers (especially being in Miami). But I can see the value being almost equal between the 2 players due to others factors (like D). And as Lathund pointed out (from the Jerry C report), many think DSantana will not maintain (on increase upon) this level of production. Brinson is felt to have greater upside and longer term value.
  14. Correct. Additionally his D is considered fair at best. I've seen too many posts suggesting he is best as a DH on the field. One more aspect is the cost /'value' of power is cheaper now then at times in the past (note the record number of players with 20 or more homers last season). Another overlooked point of that proposal: Cleveland would be sending Mejia to a division rival (Detroit), not onto Milwaukee. Inter-division deals always seem to have additional cost involved. Other posters have pointed out/ referenced that Brinson & Mejia were extremely close in the prospect rankings. Some rankings had Brinson ahead, others had Mejia ahead. Bottom line those guys are close in value. I am NOT suggesting DSantana has low/ zero value. He has value. Its just not super high. Look at it this way, Is DSantana & a throw in worth Brinson (between now & the start of spring training 2018)? I don't think so unless the throw in has a lot of value (& really shouldn't be called a throw in).
  15. Can't see Cleveland doing their part of the proposal. Mejia or McKenzie (the untouchable) is worth a lot more than D Santana and a "throw in".
  16. That would seem like a "buy high" move. I am sure our resident Cleveland fan will chime in saying he is untouchable. Well I won't say he is untouchable but another poster pointed out some relevant points: Clevinger is a multiple WAR pitcher w/ 5 years of control. and he will cost a heck of a lot more than Domingo Santana... Think adding Burnes (and someone else) or Knebel (to not deal the prospects).
  17. OMG My computer screen just got a fresh coat of hot tea.... Damn that's funny!
  18. No Chiz is horrific at 3B. Heck, the Tribe was trying Carlos Santana at 3B instead of playing Chiz there at one time. Chiz has played 1 game (2 IP) since 2015 at 3rd. The Tribe would play other options at 3B (Diaz/ Urshela) before turning back to Chiz..
  19. Chiz does not go back to 3B. He would make Braun appear to be a gold glover at 3B in comparison. Also, unless Kipnis was dealt, Kip is at 2B & JRam is at 3rd.
  20. Domingo is the expendable and valuable trade chip we have right now. Would prefer him be used to shore up pitching this year, unless of course we decide to destroy the payroll with a FA pitcher. In that case, fire away with Mejia. Yes Domingo is a trade chip, but he is not BY HIMSELF worth Mejia or Salazar (IMHO). If the Crew is trying to get both guys (a full battery) they will need to add a significant piece to their side of the trade package. Personally I do not see a deal being finalized between the 2 clubs..
  21. Perhaps more fire there. Seeing on MLBTR that Nationals are making a play for JT Realmuto. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/01/nationals-pursuing-j-t-realmuto.html Could the Crew be making another play for Mejia to solve the catching situation??
  22. If Cleveland makes that trade its because they believe Kipnis is never going to play again. Not even then... Talk about over valuing you items.. I can see why people believe DSantana as a righty is a fit for Cleveland (since they appear to have a surplus in starting pitching) & yes it makes a lot of sense for 2019 & beyond, but no one has clarified where DSantana plays in Cleveland in 2018. I think most assume he is on the field as someone else is out due to injury but if people are healthy (& producing), who does he replace in a FT role? Not Zimmer in CF. Not Brantley in LF. Not Yonder at 1B (since DSantana doesn't play there). Not at DH as EE is there (unless Edwin plays 1B & that weakens the infield D) which puts a small market team placing its largest FA signing on the bench. Does he replace Chisenhall in RF? That would mean over $5M being put onto the bench (again a very tough thing for a small market club to do) or he platoons as the right handed part (which seems strange as DSantana is solid vs RHP). The ONLY reason the Tribe picked up & paid Jay Bruce in August 2017 was the injuries to Chiz & Brantley. When Chiz got hurt in July he was leading the Tribe in RBI. Sadly many Cleveland fans saw Bruce on the team & his part of the long winning streak & believe much more offense is needed to be replaced this off-season...
  23. Thanks for the clarification/ info
  24. Signing Cain means more than the money on the contract being spent.. I believe the signing of Cain at that amount means the Brewers give up their competitive balance pick in the 2018 draft (between round 1 & 2) and some international signing pool monies. Can anyone follow up on this with the actual impacts....
