  1. I'm curious if you have similar feelings toward Luis Ortiz. Ortiz has been injured at some point each year since being drafted & was even hurt during senior year of high school before being drafted. He has yet to throw 100 IP in any of his 4 seasons of professional ball. Still people think of him as a mid-rotation starting pitcher.
  2. Kinda surprised that a small deal with the Baltimore Orioles couldn't be arranged. Baltimore is in desperate need for starting pitching options. I'm talking for a PTBNL or cash or International bonus money since Baltimore ignores that part of the market.
  3. 1 or more of them might be removed at the end of spring training for a NRI that makes the team...
  4. Completely agree. As I read his article I didn't realize that Kiley McD had returned to the Fangraphs site. While this is a move Dave is taking today, there is nothing to say he can't return (like Kiley) in the future.
  5. I can see it now: McCutchen to Cleveland for Salazar & Chisenhall...
  6. Keith - It wasn't a dismissal of DSantana. It was the acknowledgement that DSantana might not be the trade target for Cleveland. As for depth starter in Cleveland, the Indians might not be looking at that EVEN IF Salazar is moved. No Salazar deal and Clevinger might well start the year in AAA (he still has an option remaining). Even with a Salazar move, they may feel they are ok depth wise since Merritt is still around (all be it in the bullpen as a 3rd lefty/ long man) & they have others in AAA (Merryweather/ Morimando/ Plutko (off season surgery)/ Anderson (coming back from TJ).
  7. It wouldn't fly for Cleveland. IF Salazar is getting dealt, then Julian goes no where. Here is why: The starting depth (beyond the guys in Cleveland) is thin at the start of the year. Julian would likely be 1st arm called up if an injury in the rotation during the 1st half of the season. Ryan Merritt (the normal call the past 2 years) is now out of options. He is most likely bullpen bound (if not moved in a trade). Mike Clevinger (the other call up guy) is likely taking the rotation spot of Salazar. It is the past success of/ presence of Clevinger that is enabling the Indians to consider moving Salazar. Cody Anderson had TJ surgery in March 17 so he might be available for a call come the mid-point of the season. Other arms might also be ready come mid-season. Greg Allen is most likely starting the year in AAA Columbus. He completely jumped that level last season as rosters expanded. He needs a little finishing off especially since he missed 2 months last season in AA due to injury. You bring up a good point about questioning room form DSantana in the current OF. Unless a guy like Chisenhall is moved this off-season, there isn't room until 2019. So Domingo might not be the package target. As someone noted earlier, the bullpen is thin so the Indians might be after bullpen arms or players to help starting in 2019 (an effort to reload, not rebuild)..
  8. Cleveland picked up an option on Brantley for this season worth $12.5 Million. If they were looking to just replace him, the buyout was worth $1 Million. There has been some talk about signing Brantley to an extension so I doubt they are looking to replace him at this time. Chisenhall has found a home in RF, but he is best as a platoon bat vs righties. He is going into his final arbitration year. I could see them looking to find a single full-time corner OF if Brantley is not extended. If moving on from Chisenhall in RF, they are likely looking for a right-handed batter to balance the lineup. Switch: Lindor, Jose Ramirez, maybe Mejia if on roster Lefties: Kipnis, Brantley, Alonso, Zimmer, Chisenhall Righties: Edwin E, C (either Gomes or R Perez), Guyer (other half of RF platoon), bench guys Diaz, Urshela, If Cleveland wanted a D first CF, they have it already. Zimmer is very good defensively but he likely moves to corner once Greg Allen is ready. Allen missed 2 months last season with a broken hamate bone in his hand but he brings speed & D to the table. He still needs some time to develop as a hitter & will most likely open the season in AAA Columbus. Just a note for everyone: during the 2017 spring training Allen played LF as Zimmer took CF & Chisenhall was in RF. When Brantley was in LF, Allen was in CF & Zimmer played RF.
  9. Another reverse example: Chris Archer for Burnes alone (from a few posts before this one).
  10. It would take more than Domingo Santana to get any of Francisco Mejia/ Carson Kelly/ Chance Sisco/ Jorge Alfaro. Not one of those 4 plus pitching to get DSantana... Now I could see DSantana & Mejia being part of multi player packages for each side in a trade but neither side believes its a fair deal 1 for 1 or 2 for 1/ 1 for 2.
  11. IIRC there is also a difference in the amount of player control. Right now there are 4 yrs of control for Archer (at cheaper rate of pay). Going INTO last season, Sale had 3 total years of control remaining. While Sale had a better overall track record going into his trade, Archer's additional control year & reduced salary cost makes a HUGE difference. Also as Reillymcshane pointed out above: Archer also fulfills a need for Tampa at this point. I can see Archer costing a team more than Boston paid for Sale. Yes, Tampa is willing to move Archer at this point, but they don't HAVE to deal him now. They can wait for someone to overwhelm them or wait to see if someone gets needy enough at the 2018 trade deadline to pony up even more value (thinking Archer is the needed piece to make/ ensure a post-season trip).
  12. I'd gift them 1 of the top closers on the market: either Wade Davis or Greg Holland (whichever I could get cheaper). Granted closer is not a major need at this point for the Brewers thanks to Corey Knebel & where things stand with the club. However, getting 1 of these 2 guys will deepen the bullpen and move Corey back to the late inning setup role. In doing this I: 1) guard against a regression by Corey, 2) can possibly decrease the series of escalating salaries that Corey will get in the next few years, 3) protect myself in case of injury (to the signee or Corey), and 4) if the 2018 or 2019 season goes sideways I might have a chance to get a major prospect haul back if I then deal 1 of signee or Corey (like the deals made by NYY with Andrew Miller & Chapman in 2016).
  13. Looking at this from the Miami side, I think your almost there. I believe it would take Brinson, Ortiz plus 1 other good piece just for JT Realmuto. I will list out some ideas for that missing part shortly. With the other part of the deal Castro is making just under $24 million over the next 2 years so looking at that as a pure salary dump, Villar for Castro makes some sense. What I do not know is if Miami is looking at that salary dump possibility yet. It has been reported that the Marlins are looking to get Team Salary in the $90 Million range and with the moves so far, it appears that they are just about there. They might want to hold onto Castro at this point and see if a better market for him develops during the season for a July deadline move. From the Brewer perspective, Castro would help answer a few questions so they might need to sweeten the pot & pay a little more than just Villar (for Castro). As for the missing part piece I alluded to earlier, I believe Miami would be looking for younger pitching or another INF position player to build around. I think it would come down to Isan Diaz OR a pitcher like Braden Webb/ Thomas Jankins being added to the trade package. I think the Brewers can add any of them to the trade package & withstand their loss without major problems long term.
  14. That's a ton. Might be a bit too much from Brewer perspective. Substitute Nottingham for Dubon and include Villar and Guerra. Might be a ton from the Brewer perspective but it would not be enough from the Marlins perspective. On top of that the Marlins would be looking for a MLB ready catching prospect (to back fill JT) & the Brewer package lacks that. While the Crew could add 1 of their 'guys' going back, none would match Mejia/ Carson Kelly/ Chance Sisco/ Jorge Alfaro.. On another note - if any of us were the GM of Marlins & looking to facilitate a rebuild - we would not put our best remaining assets together in 1 big package deal. We would deal guys separately to get greatest return. We would look to increase the market for each player we are trying to deal & that could increase the cost/ return on the asset.
  15. If its true, it would help free Hader for rotation consideration. Logan had some good success as a LOGGY for a few season but seemed to struggle in 2017 as the #2 lefty in the Tribe bullpen. Cleveland had a contract option on him for this season worth $7 million but took the $1 million buyout instead. I don't think any Tribe fans were disappointed in that decision
  16. I get your point but sadly it won't. People will then spend time belly aching over how the Brewers offer was actually the better one or complain about DS not including a particular player so that trade went the Brewers way..
  17. I saw a note earlier in the thread & I think the point bears repeating - Chris Sale was in the ChiSox bullpen for his first 2 seasons in the majors. Hader, if in the bullpen for 2018, would be following the same path. Now personally I think Hader should be a starter until its clear he is best suited for the bullpen. That said, if the team lacks a good arm to replace Hader in the pen at the moment, his staying out there for the time being (this 2018 season) does not close the door on his going into the rotation at a later point. The key will be DS going out to get someone that can fill the void in the pen or someone internally stepping forward to take the spot.
  18. Well, the Tribe moved to fill its vacancy at 1B. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/indians-sign-yonder-alonso.html#comments 2 yrs at 16MM with a 3rd yr at 8MM as a vesting option..
  19. Tampa also sending some $$ to San Fran...
  20. Consider how DS "broke down" the Brewers for its rebuild. Guys were traded away 1 at a time whenever possible (exception was the scramble AFTER Lucroy vetoed the deal to Cleveland) for multiple pieces in return. I would guess most GMs would do it that way. Build up a market (generally 1 guy at a time) & get best possible, multi player returns on each guy. Just spit-balling here but I could see the Marlins willing to deal JT to the Brewers for a package centering on Brinson while at the same time flipping Yelich to Cleveland for a package centered around Francisco Mejia (or another team with a top flight catching prospect ready for the majors).
  21. Oh please waive Dylan Baker.. Now that the Rule 5 draft is behind us, Cleveland would gladly pick him back up..
  22. Read something on MLBTR he had an uptick in his velocity last season. Perhaps they think there is an adjustment that will allow the uptick to be more effective in 2018.
  23. more from MLBTR: A source close to Rosenthal tells him that Kemp is likely to be released by the Dodgers (Twitter link).
  24. Whoa.... I was right with you on needing to recheck the dates...
  25. I agree with this statement and its why I hope DS withstands the urges/ impulses of others to go all in for 2018. He was able to do that in 2017. A 2nd time might not be as easy. The foundations for a consistent contender are still being brought together. Rushing it or skipping steps for an enticing early reach for the ring could short circuit the entire process and doom the Brewers to a Pirates (20 yr 1992-2013)/ Royals (28 1985- 2014) / Seattle (16, 2001-present) playoff drought.
