  1. I see that Jordan Walden has been cut loose by Atlanta from a minor league deal. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/02/braves-void-minor-league-deal-with-jordan-walden.html I'm not suggesting a major league deal from Milwaukee (for Walden) in 2017, but I would not mind the Crew taking a flyer on a minor league deal. This would be a low cost chance and if successful, they might have an experienced option to add to the bullpen later in the season or even next year.... Thoughts??
  2. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/02/indians-designate-austin-adams-for-assignment.html#comments While his MLB numbers are scary to look at, his AAA numbers are rather intriguing. I think Adams needs a fair chance, ie 6 weeks of regular normal work in the bigs to determine if he can cut it. Not this get called up, sit in the bullpen waiting forever, make one appearance or two over 3 games, produce like Jeykl & Hyde and get then get sent back to the minors. Perhaps a low level/ lottery ticket prospect or cash considerations will be enough to get Adams into the Crew bullpen mix.
  3. Spotted the attached item on the John Sickels site today. A big picture outlook viewing player grades. At this point it seems to favor deeper systems.. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/2/3/14506676/farm-system-rankings-as-of-2-3-will-update-when-available
  4. Thanks for the work you put in with the chart. Interesting comparison work.
  5. as the resident Tribe fan here let me say this.... Actually met him and spoke with him during a MWL Single A game. He hit a blast I will not forget how nice he was before and after the homer. You could do worse (ie Wily Mo Pena). I would just suggest hiding his glove for the protection of all.
  6. There are reports coming out (JP Morosi http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/01/tradefree-agent-rumors-blevins-jays-alvarez-breslow-dozier.html ) that the Twins were seeking 3 of the Dodgers top 5 prospects for Dozier. If true, even if early on, its clear the Twins way overplayed their hand in trade talks & I can understand why its Forsythe in Dodger blue instead of Dozier.
  7. Yes, Scooter was tendered BEFORE the deal for Shaw/ others.. Absent that move, it made some sense to tender Scooter (& I am not a fan of Scooter). Now, it might come down to who has options at the end of spring training and health of Brewer players..
  8. ICYMI - Imhof has decided to retire after losing an eye in an accident at Brevard County during the 2016 season. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20170125&content_id=214349416&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb Phillies left-hander Matt Imhof announced his retirement on Wednesday, seven months after he lost his right eye in a training accident in Florida. Imhof, a 23-year-old reliever, recounted the nightmarish struggles he's endured since sustaining an eye injury at Brevard County's Space Coast Stadium this past June. In a piece for ESPN.com, Imhof said he was scared, angry and depressed following the incident but has since regained a positive outlook and sense of normalcy. But baseball, at least his playing career, won't be in the picture, he said. .... Imhof, playing for the Class A Advanced Clearwater Threshers, sustained the injury on June 24 when he was using a pair of rubber resistance bands anchored to a wall to stretch his arms in the athletic training room of a Florida State League ballpark. The mount of the bands detached from the wall during his stretch, resulting in a freak injury in which he was struck in the face by the equipment. According to ESPN, Imhof sustained a fractured nose and broke two orbital bones in addition to an injury that eventually forced surgeons to remove his eye. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I personally feel sorry for him and I hope he is able to keep moving forward in life.
  9. I spotted the latest SportingNews Yearbook for 2017 Baseball today. I'm guessing it went to press in mid-December (post winter meetings, before Edwin E signed with the Tribe) due to some of the predictions/ write-ups. For 2017, they pick the Brewers for a 4th place finish, basically repeating the 2016 finish order in the NL Central. Normally the mag only lists top 10 prospects per organization. This year they went 20 deep per organization and did a ranking of the various farm systems. I was stunned it listed the Brewers farm as 13th overall and behind St.Louis (#8) and Cinci (#9) in the division. I feel that was a little low but the reasoning is based on development of players once they are acquired (via draft, trade or int'l signing). The Farm items were done by David Rawnsley of Perfect Game. As for the Brewer top 20 prospects here they are: 1. Brinson 2. Ray 3. Hader 4. Ortiz 5. Bickford 6. Dubon 7. I. Diaz 8. Diplan 9. G. Lara 3B 10. B. Woodruff 11. B. Phillps 12. T. Clark 13. L. Erceg 14. C. Burnes 15. J. Pennington (from Thornburg deal) 16. D. Orimoloye 17. R. Cordell 18. J. Lopez 19. C. Ponce 20. Devin Williams
  10. Don't hold us suspense! Does the Crew win the World Series in 2020 or not?!?! I'm guessing no. The Indians, led by Frankie Lindor finally end the drought on the north shore. Game 6 in Milwaukee ends 4-2 on a strike-out throw out double play as RHP Shawn Armstrong (filling in for injured RHP Dylan Baker) gets Lewis Brinson looking while C Francisco Mejia fires a seed to second to get Corey Rey by a hair. Replay upholds the call on the field as the Series ends for the 1st time on video review. Fans look back at the 9th inning defensive plays and collectively shake their heads. Ray had barely beat out an infield grounder to 3B where Yu Cheng Chang had made an outstanding effort but Villar was outright robbed in CF on a gem by Greg Allen for the 1st out of the inning. As people head to the to the exits, Cleveland fans thank the heavens that Lucroy had nixxed the deadline deal to Cleveland in 2016 and Brewer fans realize how close those talented players were nearly stars for Miller Park.
  11. The former Cardinals/ Indians pitcher was lefty Steve Kline. Believe me, I did a double take myself..
  12. A difference of opinion on worth? Yes. Hate? No. If we didn't have Villar at 2B right now, I doubt too many people are talking about trading Scooter. But Villar is seen as a better long term fit with the team and given Scooter's lack of versatility there is a desire to trade him for a better fit. But I don't know anyone that hates him. Its not hate of Scooter. It enough people have realized that his ranking among 2B players is toward the bottom of the league (bottom 20%). If not for Villar being here, the call would be for someone else to come in & play instead of Scooter. Someone to either help lead the youngsters on the team or someone that will grow into the position and be at least middle of the pack among 2B players in baseball, especially in three years when the team is ready to contend again..
  13. I think the 1st question for the Brewers is how does Eric Thames do? After that its a matter of cost (what is Bmore looking for and what is the Crew willing to pay). I have a suspicion the teams will not be a match unless its part of the 3 way deal.
  14. Yes, Keith Law (same source for the top 100 prospects) listed the Brewers at #6 overall for system ranking. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report had the Brewers at #3 overall for system ranking (posted 1/4/17). Its part of the reason I started tracking system rankings. There are a variety of opinions and while some are better than others, I feel a consensus is better than 1 person making a decree and fans just following along to that 1 voice. One note: there was only 1 unanimous ranking last season - LA Angels in 30th place. Sources I am still waiting to hear from in 2017: Baseball America Baseball Prospectus John Sickels/ Minor League Baseball Minor League Baseball Analyst (book) Prospect Digest MiLB.com (overall ranking) MLBreports.com MLB Top Prospects With taking the averages of all source ranks last year (entering 2016), the Brewers were tied for 10th with 11.091 as a rating (the lower the better) & tied with the Cubs. 9th was Texas at 9.272 and 12th was Tampa Bay with 11.182
  15. Why? They have plenty of options at 2B and it's not like they're really competing this year or Scooter would help them that much anyway. Maybe the Rays do enough other options, but getting Scooter out of Milwaukee would be a plus for the Crew IMHO.
  16. Wonder how the Tampa INF will shake out? Perhaps they might have an interest in Scooter on a minor deal. Hate to interrupt the honeymoon of DS, but someone (he or an AGM) needs to be on the phone with Tampa and flush out a few details and get conversations started... In retrospect, I believe the Twins overplayed their hand with Dozier. Now if he struggles out of the gate in '17 like he did in '16, his value will be suspect.
  17. First & foremost: Prayers to the Ventura family & the Royals organization. A big loss in their lives. Now is not the time to discuss it, but this tragedy will have a ripple effect on the KC club and impact on the upcoming free agents. It will be an interesting discussion once that starts (in about a week or so)..
  18. I would pass on this option. Unlike last year with Aaron Hill entering the season (& the Brewers did not have much other option at 3B) or this year with N Feliz (in the closer role), there are some guys to review/ consider for moving forward behind the plate. I think club resources would be better used in other places than signing Wieters.
  19. Here is the full list from Keith Law. His previous rankings are in () Law says that an argument could be made for any of the top 3 teams to best considered the best. In his opinion, the Braves have a good balance of strong pitching and up-the-middle talent that offsets the lack of power in their position prospects. espn.com/blog/keith-law/insider/post?id=6159 1. Atlanta (1) 2. NY Yankees (13) 3. San Diego (20) 4. Pittsburgh (8) 5. LA Dodgers (2) 6. Milwaukee (5) 7. NY Mets (16) 8. Cincinnati (12) 9. Colorado (7) 10. Chicago White Sox (22) 11. Minnesota (3) 12. Houston (17) 13. St. Louis (19) 14. Philadelphia (6) 15. Texas (9) 16. Boston (10) 17. Cleveland (11) 18. Chicago (4) 19. Tampa Bay (14) 20. San Francisco (21) 21. Toronto (25) 22. Washington (15) 23. Oakland (18) 24. Detroit (26) 25. Baltimore (27) 26. Kansas City (23) 27. Los Angeles Angels (30) 28. Seattle (28) 29. Miami (29) 30. Arizona (24)
  20. A reasonable and nice deal if true. Well done DS/ Brewers!
  21. Please take off the rose colored glasses. Guerra (now) would not bring back as much as Straily did (now). Considering Jr is older (32 vs 28) and didn't pitch the full season (122 IP vs 191 IP & 31 starts) it does not balance out the extra year of control Jr would bring. The Marlins are banking on Straily improving in the Home Runs Allowed stat by leaving The Great American Launching Pad eeer Ballpark in Cinci & getting his home park to be the pitcher friendly location in Miami. Yes, teams will overpay at the deadline but each situation is different. Look at the situation you raised of Boston last season: GM David D hasn't met a good prospect he isn't willing to deal (didn't he deal away Miggy years ago??) and Drew was 27 at the time of the deal & had 3+ years of control. On top of that Drew is a lefty and an All Star. I do not see Jr making himself comparable to Drew for the deadline in 2017 Could Jr be moved in a trade to bring back items needed by the Crew - Yes, absolutely. Does that mean he will be bringing in a king's ransom - Unlikely. I have faith in the job done by DS so far but I am also realistic. I believe he will bring in a piece or pieces he feels best fit with the organizations needs.
  22. Pitching is still the name of the game. You got it, many things are possible. You don't have it, your scrambling for it. DS has done a very good job building up the system in many positions around the diamond. He has addressed the mound as well. That said, get more pitching where you can, when you can.
  23. And that would make you different from anyone else watching Bauer pitch how?? As for 'Free Wily' Peralta I spent enough watching him to throw my hands up in air and swear off watching while he is on the mound.
  24. John Sickels is a well respected evaluator. I put him on par with Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus and a few others. A club having like the Brewers 12 (or more) players out of 20 name listed at B- or higher is nothing to sneeze at. For the sake of perspective this year: the Tribe has 14 in that range (#15 Santander was lost in the Rule 5 draft to Baltimore), the Yankees have 13, the Dodgers have 13, the Red Sox have 7 (post trades for Sale & Thornburg), the Rangers have 8, the Astros have 9 and the White Sox have 11 after the deals of Sale & Eaton. I was a little surprised to see Atlanta had all 20 listed at B- or better. Since Sickles rates all teams in depth he is a good measuring stick across organizations. I was happy when in 2012 he started to rank the farm systems 1 to 30. It was another informed opinion to look at beside BA & BP. Last year he had the Brewers at #5. I can see the Brewers listed there again this year (especially since none of the Brewer top 12 had grades of A or A-). I look forward to John's final system rankings for this year.
